Nintendo Switch #5

If there was something else on the horizon then that’s one thing. They could have said hey the PoR/Radiant Dawn will be remade on the Switch but here’s this game to pass the time. It would have a huge reception. Issue is it feels like they are just like hey I know you want this but there’s this that you don’t want. As a huge FE fan, I find these hack and slash games to be cheap gimmicks.
I mean there’s still ten months left in the year.

Finally got around to seeing the direct... all I can say is: Nintendo, stop pulling me back in dammit(please be like Sony and release stuff on PC please).
Random thoughts:
-Sweet a new Mario Strikers is on the way. I'm kinda confused by the multiplayer part, is it like HUT/EASHL but with friend clubs only, or is there going to be a ladder for randoms?
-Are they going to release a Taiko drum accessory for that drum game? I always wanted to try that out just because I think it would be fun to wail on something for a bit.
-Huh, several tactics games coming out in Advance Wars, Triangle Strategy and that mech game... maybe I'll check a couple of them out.
-Well I just finished Xenoblade Chronicles 2 a little over a month ago, so I'm pretty hyped up to see they're releasing a third one. I hope they don't do that annoying 'win in the game, but lose in the cutscene' crap they did in 2 though. That happened way too many times.

I've seen them around on eBay before. There are some out there and I have almost come close to purchasing one.

I'm gonna try this Hori one that is listed on Amazon. For some reason I thought they stopped making these years ago. I think I got confused with Rock Band/Guitar Hero dying or something. Looking forward to it!

Xbox saying they want to put future Activision-Blizzard games on the Switch is pretty cool tbh. The Nintendo-Microsoft friendship is one of the best and weirdest relationships in gaming.

I'm really hoping at some point Nintendo will just start releasing stuff on PC, but I'm still not impressed with their releases on the NSO's NES/SNES online stuff. It's still going way too slow, and I swear it's because Nintendo wants us to commit piracy.

Though this post did remind me of another random thought I had on the Direct:

-Fire Emblem Warriors-type game? May I suggest... Fire Emblem: Total War instead?

What I wonder is if they ever plan to do HD-2D remakes finally. Especially with how Live a Live looks.

The FF6 pixel remaster has some 3D in the opera scene so you wonder if it's something they are considering.

Chrono Trigger is another that comes to mind
God, I hope not. Novelty aside, that style has some major warts, IMO (especially for games where the originals have beautifully drawn backgrounds-- which Live A Live admittedly never did). Kind of reminds me of how we view Mode-7 in hindsight now. I think it has a place when used sparingly for cinematic effect, but if they want to modernize sprite games, I would much rather they give them the Eastward lighting treatment instead (or something similar to what they did with Tactics Ogre on the PSP).

I'd want this type of look to be the standard for 2D remakes, personally.

The NES/SNES libraries are basically complete. You aren't going to get major third party games on there due to licensing.

First party games they have pretty much all their major releases out. Mario RPG is maybe the biggest missing game, but that has licensing issues too and Square is a notorious pain in the ass with this stuff

Plus the realizable third party games for those systems (Contra, Mega Man, Castlevania) are already out on collections. The only real first party stuff that remains for those systems are unlocalized games (like a few Fire Emblems) or require peripherals like Mario Paint, Duck Hunt, etc. Earthbound and its predecessor were basically the last first party games that were still not on NSO.

SMRPG would be ideal but as you said, Square... It's funny to me that they're putting almost every post-SNES RPG on the Switch, but almost nothing from the NES/SNES eras. Not having the FF pixel remasters on Switch (or any console for that matter) is downright strange to me.

Earthbound is probably still my favorite JRPG.

Such a weird f***ing game but made with so much care and thought. I don't think how you beat the final boss will ever be outdone in terms of "what what?"

The part where you need to defeat the five moles that all claim they're the third strongest for some reason is a perfect example of how this game operates lol.

Squeezed every ounce out of the SNES's sound chip with that fantastic soundtrack too.

Super underrated game because of a combo of a really weird ad campaign (this game stinks!)that kinda sabotaged the gsme and not being one of the big Nintendo IPs.

The one that they keep neglecting that I don't quite understand is Tetris Attack.

It should be first-party, or at least a Nintendo reskin of a Japanese game that I'm not sure is 100% Nintendo, but even if it wasn't, that game is already on Switch Online as Panel De Pon anyways, so I'm not sure why they wouldn't have the rights for the more Nintendo version.

It's easily the best puzzle game on the system and one of the best games on it, period, arguably one of the best puzzle games of all time, and visually holds up as well as anything on the console, IMO. It should really be a staple whenever they do these kinds of things.

I have to imagine the Pixel Remasters will eventually find their way onto the Switch.

Idk how interested I am in them though because at least the PC versions can be modded to fix the trash font they used.

For anyone getting into Earthbound, Nintendo shared a pdf of their excellent player’s guide for it online for everyone.

https://www.nintendo.co.jp/clvs/manuals/common/pdf/CLV-P-SAAJE.pdf

I’ve got to see if I have my copy saved somewhere….

Loved that player's guide. Was the only one I ever sold (selling it with the cartridge netted me a very pretty penny).

Nintendo's offical guides were always high quality. I always found the Prima guides to be a massive step down.

Earthbound is kinda difficult from what I'm remembering. Bought it on the WiiU virtual console and I don't think I made it beyond Threed.

The early sections are definitely tough when you are on your own, and Paula joins super underleveled.

It can be a bit grindy too (just the nature of RPGs from this era), but once Ness learns some healing spells, you can set him on support and let Paula blast enemies with PSI. Load up Jeff with bottle rockets and you shouldn't have issues until the last couple of areas of the game (enemies start to hit really hard there)

Jeff never joined my team, so I doubt I made it far at all.

I just reconnected my WiiU to play/maybe finish BOTW, but perhaps I'll start Earthbound back up. And yes, I bought BOTW for WiiU.

Heck, maybe I should finally play Mario Galaxy 2.

It's the Tetris part of Tetris Attack that keeps it from being re-released.
