Haven't played on my Switch much (outside of Smash, I can't quit it) since I got my PS5 a few months ago but I've started playing Xenoblade Chronicles: DE after getting hyped for the third installment. I've already played through XC2 but didn't have a wii so I missed out on this one the first time. Only like 6-7 hours in so far but really digging it, Monolith Soft is so good at this.

It happened again, I got bored and annoyed by a non-fully 3D Mario game before beating it. I played Super Mario 3D World all the way until the end of stage 7, and ultimately just got annoyed at having to repeat a tedious Bowser fight and gave up (seriously, the battle against him in his car is just dull as snot and takes too long). Basically the same story happened with Super Mario 3D Land and I believe one of the NEW Super Mario Bros. games as well. Just tediously kept playing and got to the very end and stopped caring entirely.

I'll give Bowser's Fury a try at some point down the road, as it's supposedly more like Odyssey, but man I really need to learn my lesson. I'm just over the Mario formula aside from their major tent pole entries to the series (Mario 64, Sunshine, the Galaxies, and Odyssey) and need to let those other ancillary titles slide past me as they've long since been entertaining to me.

A Kirby & the Forgotten Land demo was just made available in the eShop.

Checked it out because I was curious and hoping maybe it was like Mario Odyssey given the mechanics (of capturing objects). But, it's way more of a straight forward level design, instead of the sandbox of each level of Odyssey where you can go after whatever stars you want. I know Kirby games are notorious for being easy, but even on what they call "Wild Mode" I think I beat the demo without dying once. I'm not looking to play a Soulsborne game, but this game seems way too easy. I love how Mario Odyssey (and a lot of Nintendo in general), can walk that fine line where aspects of the game are very easy, and its very approachable, but if you want to fully beat the game it has maddening levels of difficulty. This game just felt easy. I'll check reviews when it drops, and see the general opinion around here, but I'm less excited for it than I was before I played the demo.

Kirby games tend to lean on the very easy side but the challenge often comes up in post-game content like the Arena. Plus, these levels were very obviously taken from the first area of the game.

Is anyone else a bit surprised that Nintendo hasn't touched Nintendogs since 2011, or even made a spiritual successor? I loved them on the DS as a kid, and they seem like they'd be a perfect Switch title, and I imagine they could be pretty innovative with the concept now.

Started playing Triangle Strategy. I am not far at all but it seems like a slightly more complicated fire emblem and I love that. Issue so far is there’s SO MANY cut scenes.

My wife is playing the demo. Will probably buy the full thing, but I think we both agree the early voice acting is pretty....off putting.

It does get slightly better as you go on. The story is very interesting. The gameplay itself is great. The cutscenes are so freaking many. I’ve played over two and a half hours and have only done three battles.

Is it just linear missions, or are they generated to a degree like XCOM?
I’ve never played XCOM but it’s very similar to fire emblem in the battles itself (at least so far). There are multiple choices though that basically decide the story so it adds to the replay-ability. I’ve only come across one so far as I’m not far into the game at all but you decide which route you want to go and it’s very obvious that it has entirely different consequences (the game straight up tells you this). So to answer your question, I don’t know.

I'm curious about Triangle Strategy, but the selling point would have to be just HOW good the storytelling is, and Octopath Traveller makes me very skeptical of that.

Would anyone vouch for it's story being outright brilliant rather than just enjoyable/serviceable? How does it compare to the storytelling of the Tactics games that it's influenced by?

Heh, sounds like it's Fire Emblem basically, which is mostly linear missions with story decisions available to the player(which is fine). Maybe I'll check out a review or two, see if I like the themes of the game.

In XCOM games there's a strategic layer where you control your base/research your stuff/and send out forces to attack/scout out stuff. These create missions that you send your squad of forces into. For example, shoot down a UFO, send in your squad to secure the crash site and try to capture/kill aliens and get their stuff to research. These missions are usually a collection of tiles that build the level ands its layout for the mission(though some missions are always the same in every game, like the final mission). Of course, you can still see some familiarity, but it does enough to keep things fresh. Sometimes the random generation can be unbalanced though, I remember when playing the first game one time my landing craft was placed in the middle surrounded by buildings on all sides with aliens in them and this was at night. Definitely not the easiest start.

I wish Fire Emblem: Three Houses had that for the side missions you could do each month, instead of just playing the same maps over and over again.

Edit: Oh, I see Triangle Strategy has a demo available, I'll just check that out and decide to purchase based on that.
