I don’t like the top 4/6 and PP part at all either.

But at the same time, we often see the players with the strongest support cast — like parents as ex players — make the toughest demands.

Kevin Hayes is one example. Chicago wanted him to be a winger. They had guys like Buff and Bickel playing top 6 roles as real bring out the garbage type of players. Hayes thought he was the best fit at center. He forced his way out from a top NHL team to a more struggling team he had no attachment to. It worked out well for him.
I guess it depends on your point of view. Hayes career hasn't been legendary. He could have been a cup winner.

Legendary...? Hayes was a 24th pick who bet on himself. He could of Jessiman-ed himself and got injured at Boston College and ended up with nothing.

Instead, he's made over 41M USD so far and has 4 more seasons of 7M+ contract. That's a phenomenal success and in exchange, missed out on the 2015 Blackhawks cup...who cares. Did that cup win make Antoine Vermette 'legendary'?

Wait, what?
Study the avatars, figure out the groomer, don't let him perpetuate his evil.

You can save your time and ignore huerter

For awhile, I thought that poster was the world's worst programmed AI, like clockwork only typing 'royal road', 'donk', and 'high major dobo'.

Now it has added 'groomer' to its list, realize it's someone severely oxygen deprived.
We are on the precipice of the royal road revolution, this board is filled with donks, and my experience as a high major DOBO makes me an authority up in here. Don't hate the player.

Why do you assume Hayes could not have made that and more? Play the same, put up the same stats and have the label as a winner might get him more than that in the free agent market. Antoine Vermette was 32 years old nearing the end of his career when he played 19 games for Chi. Totally apples and oranges situation. Hayes also did not demand a top 6 line. Nils is wanting to play top 4.

Is Tyler Seguin labeled a 'winner' for being on that Bruins cup team? If Hayes was a rookie on the last Blackhawks winning team, he's just another member, not integral.

I also don't subscribe to the fan fiction that Hayes would of done anything noteworthy or better elsewhere. AV gave Hayes a super long leash and the transition away from Stepan/Brassard gave him even more runway. Hayes wanted to be a center and he got the best chance to be one, on a competitive team. (w/ two local compatriots in Kreider and Boyle).

We're talking about a player that never scored 50 pts in a season but still received a 50M deal (7.14M/7yr) and has worn a letter in all of his years in Philly. I'm left scratching my head how his career could of been better, even if people are coloring it by Philly's recent performance.

At time of signing, Hayes advisors stated: "We figured New York would be best for the short and long-term" I'm hard pressed to have any disagreement with their belief even w/ the comfort of hindsight.

This isn’t a big deal the kid did not prove anything last year..he is the same boat as Kravy. Better put up or shut up.. his agent is an idiot..just screwed his client by going public with the whole nhl.. surprised anyone would sign with him..

So why didn't Chytil request a trade, he was bounced from AHL to NHL? Chytil at least knows the AHL was good for his future while he was down there. Why couldn't Anderson and Lundkvist have Chytil's good attitude?
Anderson already showed a questionable attitude before he even got to the NHL. Nils still has time to turn this thing around. What this demand really says is I have no confidence in my own ability to go beat out some of the guys. I think he just needs to change his mindset. That he wants to come in kick butt and make the decision for the coaches. If he kicks butt in camp he will make the team. Once you are on the team anything can happen from injuries to bad play. He just has to do it. Not talk it. Even if he was in the AHL he would get a call up if he was really dominating. The better he plays the better we are as a team. Nobody wants to have him in the AHL. We want him to show us that he is a good NHL player as soon as possible.

For sure, I meant it more as an example of a player that ought to have a strong support class -- brother is in the NHL, he is cousins with the Tkachuk kids and the Fitzgerald clan -- and who surely with support at some level from it decided that it was right to take things into his own hands.

Do remember Tomas Sandstrom? He was a really cool player. From early on in his career he said he might give up hockey and go back to Sweden. I felt that played a role in why he was traded a few times. I remember Espo mentioning it very early in his career. I always found it odd that Tomas had such a long career after making that going back to Sweden statement multiple times. Turns out Tomas only used the threat of Sweden as a contract negotiation. I wish he never made it and stayed a Ranger.

Nils: I want a trade.

Nils also: I may skip camp.

If you want a trade, wouldn't it behoove you to show up at camp, in great condition and play your ass off so that more teams get in on the action and it increases the likelihood that you DO get dealt?

Players are stupid
Stop using logic and reason. How dare you. He wants what he wants and he wants it now without merit.

Is this phenomenon just a soccer related thing for the Euro kids? Asking for transfers/loans isn’t viewed as the betrayal that American fans see it as, especially for a young guy that’s buried on the depth chart.

You’d think these kids would get an education on the NA culture but maybe not?

Nah, and isn't it very concentrated to NYR? When Toronto drafts a Swede they play 3-4 years for them in the AHL. Many of the bigger occasions of kids forcing their way out from NHL teams have also involved NA players (Hayes, Vesey, Fox, Lindros).

Soccer is a little different actually, with the Agents often playing an extremely big role and getting a big piece of the money too. Its anarchy in that sense compared to the NHL.

I do not think this is about being a Euro. Zooks took less money multiple times because his heart was in NY. When I was young I said and did some dumb things. I really think this could be overcome if Nils is willing. Just come in to camp and make your case on the ice. We want the kid to succeed here.

He just wants out. He doesn't care if the value coming back isn't large.

This is on the front office more than it's on the prospect.

How many prospects does this have to happen with for folks to realize it's the organization, not the player? Spot the trend, people. There's one constant in all of them. And it's not the player.
He should care to the extent that if the value coming back is too small , Drury is going to say **** it.

I never mentioned return.

I mentioned enlarging the buying pool to ensure he gets traded.

This is not on team or player. This is a numbers game that doesn't favor Nils.

His game is suited for more than just a 3rd pairing spot and he's not getting that opportunity here as he is waay down on the depth chart.

I'm not gonna lay blame here on anything g other than an unfortunate situation.

I would not move him unless we get fair value back. I would encourage him to come to camp and win a job. Age happens, injuries happen, salary issues happen. If he plays well he could be in that top 4 this year or next.

This isn’t viewed the same way in European football. Good young players that aren’t quite good enough to crack the lineup at the big clubs get loaned or sold to lesser teams that need bodies. It’s a smart system, and I assume these Euro kids think that’s how things operate here as well.
Well it sort of does in the nhl too.. as prospects are sent to AHL, ECHL... and/or lianed to Euro leagues.

Sandstrom was one of my first favorite players. Was my first jersey. Even taped my stick like him. He was a blast to watch as a Ranger. Had a new years eve hat trick against the islanders with the third goal happening in OT. He was traded along with Granato to bring in Bernie Nicholls, then a few years later, Nicholls turned into Messier, so can't complain but I was really bummed when they traded Sandstrom.
