I want Zadorov here as much as anybody, I don't want to move a 1st round pick for Zadorov alone.

Now according to Friedman Treliving wants both Zadorov and Tanev.

If he can somehow pull that off that's different because then you have significantly changed the defense.

But for Zadorov alone? I think a 1st round pick is to high.

Agreed. If we moved out a first for Zadorov you'd want a little more than just an expiring UFA Zadorov. He's not that much better than a Luke Schenn or a Lyubushkin, as important as those player types are.

Maybe you get Calgary to do a sign and trade and retain a bit of salary, and we get Z cheaper. A la McCabe.

The problem is teams are not moving RFA dmen with first pairing potential, you need to draft and develop those.

Except for Towes, Hanifin, Hamilton, Weegar, Provorov, McDonagh, Muzzin, Lindholm..

~26 year old #2/3 defensemen with ~2 years of term or on the tail end of their RFA years get moved every year for prices comparable to what we paid for Foligno or one first round pick less than we paid for renting 2 fourth liners in Plekanec and Boyle.

If the Leafs do get both Zadorov and Tanev Klingberg isn't enough money going out which means either we're paying a 1st Round Pick + for Calgary to retain.

To Toronto-
Tanev 50% retained
Zadorov 25% retained

To Calgary-
Klingberg
Abbruzze
Niemela
1st Round Pick

I've gotten the impression that Tre isn't particularly big on Brodie. I'd imagine he'll be out the door if it comes to any sort of trade to free up cash.

I also wouldn't be so quick to write off the value of mid-tier prospects - from the outside looking in we don't really know how other teams value them. The Flames scouts for example gave probably gotten to know Abbruzzse pretty well considering he was teammates with Coronato.

All offense no D is a bold strategy... but those were all the offseason moves, so maybe he should continue with it

You'd be pretty surprised the number of high quality, prime aged defensemen who have exchanged hands over the past 3 years. The only issue is the Leafs have never been in that market, either due to cap constraints or unwillingness to re-structure or commit to one of those players or identify some low value guys with high potential.

Realistically the only cap constraint was that this is the first season that Muzzin was confirmed LTIR from day 1, the previous years he was in the day 1 lineup and only got LTIR’d mid-season with an expectation he’ll return at some point. Restructuring to fit one in isn’t necessary, the money is there once Kling/Brodie expire and we waive Reaves and/or replace Kampf with a normally priced 4th line C.

When you consider what Chychrun was traded for last year (with term), I can't see how Zadorov (UFA) would cost a 1st rounder.

Anybody that Calgary VS Montreal saw why you bring in Zadorov, especially in that last minute he made at least 2 goal saving plays.

The problem with this is that if you do it, you are basically done for the season. No cap space, no prime assets left to trade. Do you really want to spend it all on Zadorov and Tanev?

Well you can trade pieces still... Marner/Nylander.. Brodie.. others.

Not all firsts are created equal. That first was 12th overall and moved when Ottawa was clearly missing the playoffs. They also added in 2 second rounders

Throw in Reeves and get er done

A team trying to win isn't trading Marner, Nylander, or even Brodie (and the latter has no value to most teams anyway).

I team trying to win wouldn't be this team who does the same shit every year and lose lol.

maybe getting a #1 d or atleast 2 or 3 number 2 and 3 D will be better.

Sure lets lose in the playoffs and then lose Nylander for nothing lol

No, thanks. I’m good with targeting Zadorov at the right price, but not interested in overpaying for him and Tanev.

Dont see us getting both Tanev and Zadorov.

Just bring in Zadorov
If we could get both I'd be open to trading Brodie for salary filler purposes but also as someone Calgary can flip to a desperate contender looking for defensive depth at the trade deadline. (Assuming Klingberg is also packaged in the deal for salary purposes.)

Even losing Brodie the D would still look pretty pretty pretty good.
Reilly-Tanev
McCabe -Liljegren
Zadorov-Timmins

For me with that line up, leafs still with a hole on their second pair...

The guy leafs should go for is Hanifin and give him a 8 year around 6M extension ( deal calgary was close to sign with him). You get a guy to complete rielly on second pair and fix a big hole for the next 8 season at a good price

He can play on a shutdown pair, he bring offensive. Hes a great skater. Hes not the most physical but able to use his body the right way. Hes the perfect all-around d for toronto and i dont know when will be the next chance for Toronto to get that kind of D as young. That will probably cost a 1st and minten but your solving a hole for next 8 season.
