There are obviously several things in play but I think one thing that matters is the player's draft number and rookie production. The shadow they cast lasts a really long time -- both in positive and negative cases. It takes way longer for players like Kucherov, St. Louis and Datsyuk to get premier roster sports and TOI as well as recognition if they do show that they are the real deal. Conversely, franchises give top draft picks ample chances and time even though the talent (or sometimes effort/dedication) just isn't on par with the draft status (see Yakupov, Puljujärvi, Kakko, Lafreniere).Sometimes I wonder if age is the only reason Kucherov is never in the discussion for best player in the league.
Kucherov was on an outstanding trajectory to claim the best player of the league status having posted 100 and 128 point seasons. He then continued with a 7th place finish in the scoring race (8th in ppg). I suppose that's when his bubble bursted to some extent and he fell back into the contention for the 2nd best player.
