He has 67 points in his last 34 games while playing the best defensive hockey of his career and scoring more at even strength. Don’t believe there is any decline there seeing as how he started the season playing hurt.

I don't think I'd use the word decline either. He missed games due to an injury and came back likely too soon and played through it. Likely moreso him rounding out his game and continuing to improve on the defensive side.

I just stated he doesn't seem to always feel the need to create scoring chances especially when the Oilers are leading later in the game

I doubt Kuch will win it at this point.

Teams are double and triple teaming him and the cap has neutered any depth the lightning had.

Stay out of the box against us and we can't score 5v5. We're going to have trouble making the playoffs.

McDavid with 2 more assists tonight. 14 assists in his last 5 and 21 in his past 10, with 25 points in his last 10 games, 69 points in his past 35 games.

9 points behind Kucherov, 7 behind MacKinnon. Has made up 15 points on MacKinnon and 11 on Kucherov in these past 10 games.

Still 4 games in hand on both.

4th consecutive Art Ross and 6th overall incoming.

just for reference 6 Art Rosses would put him into a tie with Howe and Lemieux behind only Gretzky

I think McDavid is bored and has decided to challenge himself to win the Art Ross without scoring any more goals this season. He doesn't seem to be trying to score goals. Maybe he wants 100 assists. 36 assists in 31 games? Seems possible.

Ha! Yes, maybe. Same thing happened to Gretzky in 1985-86. His shots inexplicably stopped going in around January (I think he went something like 10 games without a goal for the first time, ever), so he started throwing up assists like they were going out of style.

It was the end of January and into February of the year. Gretzky went nine games without a goal, but put up 24 assists in that time. He was held off the scoresheet just once, the first game of the drought. The last game, as you mentioned, he posted seven assists in an 8-2 stomping of the Quebec Nordiques.

He scored the following game and put up a string of five straight games with a goal where he posted another 16 points. Incredibly, he had 40 points over this 14 game stretch that included a "slump."

We just may see one guy get 70 goals this year and another 100 assists. Craziness.

It is really weird to watch McDavid this season and his allergic reaction to scoring goals.

Would like to know what type of lingering injury he's dealing with because the velocity and accuracy of his shot is gone. That wicked release where he shoots through a defender and goes 5-hole? Don't think he's scored a single one this year and during his 64 campaign he probably netted at least 20 with that shot. He absolutely refuses to shoot the puck when it's on his stick in high danger areas this season.

Kind of remarkable that he's still producing at this clip as one would think this should make him easier to defend but his vision and talent is out of this world.

I do wonder a little bit too. It can’t be all be attributed to doubling down on defense and a seemingly intent focus on dishing out 100 assists. I noticed some real chances last night where he passed it up with a willingness a little bit beyond what I’m used to seeing from him.

His new fun stats revolve around assists and shots. 17 apiece over the past 7 games. That’s only 199 shots per 82 games. He’s been at the equivalent of 300 shots per season during the previous three seasons and his 352 last year ranked third.

For now, it’s hard to argue with anything that’s going on. The team is winning, his plus/minus is through the roof (second amongst all forwards), and he’s piling up assists as if Gretzky is possessing him.

If Matthews scores 75 goals while providing Selke level defense, it won't be so clear cut. Matthews has a real shot at winning both Rocket and Selke in the same year, something I'm not sure has ever been done before... and putting up 70+ goals for the first time since Mario in the early 90's. At the very least, the vote will be very, very interesting this year with MacKinnon still the current front-runner, and Kuch still going off for Tampa. Who will win it? I can't remember the last time it's been so up in the air between this many players...

If Matthews is providing selke level defense, so is McDavid.

From The Athletic last week... the top 4 are a tight group with Matthews tied for 3rd, any of those 4 could win it. Then there's a large drop off to #5. So yes, Matthews is providing Selke level defense.

I don't see McDavid's name anywhere. If you watch Matthews play without the puck, you'd understand what an animal he is in all 3 zones. Considering the way he scores, it's pretty clear that while McDavid is the best overall offensive driver, Matthews is the best pure goal scorer and best 2-way player in the league.

Matthews and McDavid give up comparable amount of shots while on the ice, while mcdavid gives up far less high danger chances.

I also cant see your picture cause this site sucks.

1 point games for both Kucherov and MacKinnon.

McDavid up tomorrow. Doesn't usually light it up against Wild.
