Running hot?
He's playing normally.

Statistically based off of his per game performance over his last few seasons, he's definitely "running hot" as far as his production goes. Obviously 2019 was his career year so far, but I think what he did 5 seasons ago is less indicative in this trend.

But compared to his last 3 seasons (4 years), he's probably 20-25% running hot on points, and like 40-50% on goals.

I'm just going by his games this year. He's been producing consistently all season.
He's one of the best players in the game so him scoring at a high rate isn't all that shocking.
Especially when the team needs him more than ever.

Believe it or not he should probably have more points then he does this year. There have been countless times where he sets guys up for grade A chances and they just can't finish the play lol.

Part of it is we just need him more now. He's double shifting a lot. When we had deeper teams, Cooper was big on rolling lines. Now Kuch gets a lot of extra shifts. I'd be surprised if his icetime isnt up a minute or more over previous years. But also, TB plays differently when they need goals, and that has been the case most of the season. Not in many situations to sit on leads, and it has failed quickly when they have tried.

Mcdavid gonna finish third in scoring at 27. Pretty putrid wouldn't you say @Video Nasty ?

I don’t know why you tag me so much. From day one, even with an injury factored in, I’ve been upfront that McDavid not winning the Art Ross this year would be disappointing. I’m also here every day, rain or shine, praising his competition, something you simply don’t do.

Yawn, I guess you’re back for now though. When McDavid goes off on another heater and anyone else goes cold, I’m sure you’ll ghost us again, only returning from your hidey hole when the conditions look mildly favorable.

Crosby lost to Benn and Tavares. I think a finish behind Kucherov and MacKinnon, would be less embarrassing, but yes, still disappointing after a 153 point symphony.

That being said, let the dust settle on the season before crowing. I still expect McDavid to win this thing. Just as I am now, I’ll be here to complain if it doesn’t happen and wonder what his age 28 season would have in store.

He is shooting a lot more this year. If you shoot more you are going to score more goals. His shooting percentage is right around his career average.

This point needs to be emphasized more. The only difference this year from Kuch that increased his production is TOI and taking more shots. That's pretty much it. He's on a weaker underperforming team, and he is about to throw out his back carrying everyone.

Should be a good race but I think you may be right
Agreed. Kucherov's early advantage will definitely help in making this a tight race for a while and his level of play had been impressive so far, credit to him for that. But ultimately he's never played at quite this high of a pace before and I don’t think he's better now at age 30 than he was at 25. Even back then when he had far fewer games(much more in the tank) his pace slowed towards the end of that season. The Lighting will also be hard pressed to maintain that 31% pp rate.

Looking like a two horse race between Kucherov and McKinnon at this point.

And McDavid.

Don’t let the fact that it’s going to take four months for the Oilers to play their four games in hand on the others trick you into thinking that this a true 10-14 point gap.

Of course, it is predictable fodder for the future when we will have to listen how it took McDavid all season to gain the lead, while ignoring his injury where he missed 2 games and was rushed back early to then play like a shell of himself for 9 games, while also having a handful less games available to him than anyone else.

Hats off to Kucherov and MacKinnon for making McDavid pay early though.
