if Keefe gets fired it'll be coming from above Dubas which means if Shanny decides to turf him and offer Trotz the job he'll give him any terms he wants within reason even if it cuts into Dubie authority or against his wishes

Huh? It's not crapping on Marner to say Robertson is better suited in that position. It plays perfectly to Robertson's strength, his shot

On a 3 on 1 like that I want the best shooters. While Marner can score, his shot isn't the best and doesn't have the gravity others do

Leafs' ass got butchered everytime in special teams (2 x Boston, habs, tampa) while they didn't do F-all on their own PP but opposition goals goals on theirs.

If you are implying that effort is a problem with this group, it is not. For example, Matthews is really struggling but he is still laying out hits, blocking shots, and working hard to get his opportunities. Man just can't score for ****. A lazy player is not doing what Matthews is doing right now. Even Marner looks like he is "trying", but the guy is just playing like an idiot. If we are going to complain, at least complain about the right things.

4th line too. Tons of hits. Working and skating hard. Just not playing smart or with any kind of skill. I expected more out of them defensively, and even that is not going well for them.

Overhandling pucks. Overpassing. Missing passes. Missing shots. That is killing us more than anything right now, and that is not a lack of effort. If anything, that is trying too hard.

Fair, I do think they've battled throughout the season so far, it's moreso lapses mentally against weaker opponents. They even addressed that in the pre-game versus Arizona IIRC. Those need to tighten up so we can bank easy points we seem to miss out on. It's the difference between finishing 1st and drawing an easier first round opponent and potentially getting Tampa again

I actually thought the D overall really stepped up and played a mostly clean game.

Sandin looks to be almost up to speed. Felt they cut down on the egregious mistakes, which can make all the difference in tight games.

Hope Gio is okay, that was a violent collision with the boards (I didn't think that was a penalty).

coming into this season we were most concerned about goaltending and 2nd line LW... both look surprisingly solid all of a sudden.

if our underperformers so far are Marner and Matthews we're sitting pretty. those guys will absolutely get it together.

This is honestly a really good point, we know Matthews/Marner will turn it around but having the goaltending and 2LW look solid is a great sign

Though I will argue the bottom 6 is also a concern, I don't like its composition tbh

How about useless Engvall comes out and you try Malgin on the third line.
Or any number of the ineffective vanilla bottom 6 players we have.

beh i wuldnt touch that third line for now . they are dominating play with a 70+% xgoal diff. thats pretty bonkers , even if they dont score their opponents generate nothing.

thats 4th line has weight but they are getting demolished everytime on the ice. I would add some offense to that line with malgin

frankly mont f the offensive problems with this team is the first line. they suck right now. probably the best idea is to overload it with nylander until matthews finds his game.

Marner scored a few like that last season. Everyone sees Matthews and just knows he's gonna shoot. So they cheat before he gets the pass, and Marner pops it in.

Or they move across as soon as he gets the pass and like tonight, he feeds a player with a better angle for the shot.

I actually had no idea he was +1 tonight, I only meant +1 to mean that I completely agree with your observation. But now you made me look at the box score and you're right so I'll say it again ... +1.

Seriously though, how about we don't heap huge expectations on the kid. Let him develop in peace over the next 77 games and hope he can be a substantial contributor when it really counts - in the playoffs.

Samsonov is playing well. It’s good to see. We desperately needed one of the two of them to take the reins.

I thought the Mete signing was one that flew under thaw radar, and was a shrewd move. Yes, a small, puck moving LHD, but young with some upside.

He looked good tonight and if Holl is going to play, I like Mete on the 3rd pairing with him.

He can get back to cover for Holl if needed and can get the puck out of the defensive zone better, something Muzzin-Holl struggle with.

Marner is a notorious slow starter. He just needs to stay out of his own head.

Matthews is just cold. No lack of effort or give a crap on his part. Once the man starts, he blazes.

We just have to find ways to win ugly like we did tonight until they find their gears, then we are flying.
