Player Discussion Nick Suzuki Part 11

Status
Not open for further replies.
Suzuki is 6th in ice time for all NHL forwards.

Highest ranking forward is Rantanen and he ranks 33rd when all the Defenseman are mixed in. Why can't coaches play a guy like McDavid the same ice time as the top D in the NHL? I always found this funny. If a D can handle it, I'm sure McDavid can!

Makar is at 27:04 min a game and McDavid is at 22:40. Suzuki is at 21:23

What? No hes not wtf.

Suzuki was a 1.6 ppg player in the OHL, the same ppg Slaf put up in a seriously inferior league in Finland.

Caufield was breaking scoring records left and right in the ncaa.

Both were at least as good as him at 18.

Liga is inferior to the OHL? If we project the careers of OHL players into the future sure. But no, the competition in Liga is not at all inferior to the OHL. It's quite the opposite. Regardless of individual skill, he was playing against men, and showed alright with 10 points in 30 something games. Not bad for a teenager.

Problem is, you're both wrong. Dachs the best player on the team. Slafkovsky has the highest ceiling. Suzuki is the best leader but won't remain their best player likely. Well, in terms of offensive production at least. Honestly, I could eventually see Dach surpassing Suzuki as 1C. And I could see Dach, Slafkovsky and Caufield all being better offensively, and in Dach and Slafs case, possibly all around. I don't think Caufield will ever be that all around dynamo, he has his lane, he'll stay in it.

Suzuki is great, terrific, a high floor kind of guy, no doubt. Super dependable. I bet there will be some seasons he even gets close to a PPG. He seems as stable as stable comes, and that's good for a leader. But being a leader doesn't necessarily make you the teams best player either. I kind of view Suzuki like Horvat in Vancouver, all though this season he's found a new level, which is I'm sure a bit surprising to everyone. Including Islander fans, who are now hoping Lou didn't sell the farm for a one year wonder.

Do you know Bergeron only scored at a PPG pace like twice in his whole career? I think the Bergeron compares were fairly apt, all though Suzuki will never be as dominant on faceoffs as Bergeron, that dude's in a different stratosphere, where only like him, Ryan O 'Reilly, Horvat and a few other players exist. And Suzuki, at least at this point in time, isn't quite there. But he could get there one day.

Dach though, Slaf.... those two could be, with the right development, absolute beasts.

So what I'm saying is, if, somewhere down the line, Suzuki starts getting 80 points a season, it will very likely be because he compliments the players around him, who facilitate higher scoring.

And you know the Habs are taking Bedard or Fantilli if they get either of those two picks. I'd be hoping for Bedard honestly, not just because he's ridiculous. But because he might end up on the wing theoretically.

Anyway,Habs got an absolute steal in Dach. In Slaf is the exact type of high ceiling player you take a chance on in that situation. I'm pretty sure 95% of the NHL teams would have done the same in that draft. You know the Devils were sitting their praying the Habs took anyone but Slaf. I doubt anyone behind the Devils even thought they'd have a chance.

So no, Slaf and Suzuki are not comparable as prospects really. Slaf is miles ahead of Suzuki in that regard. Not their "projectables.

I don't get all this Slaf hate either. The kid has looked like a talented 18 year old who can handle himself in the NHL. What an absolutely atrocious start to his career. huh?

Suzuki is playing way too much as is. He wouldn't look half dead every December if the coach was playing him 18 minutes per game instead of 21-23.

Slaf's 10 points was awful. Even Lehkonen outscored him as a teen, even Kotkaniemi outscored him, S Aho outscored him, Puljujarvi outscored him.

He has some sort of obsession with Slafkovsky, it’s not healthy at this point.

As if graphs and points tells the whole story lol, but he’s been repeating the same things over and over for months now as if he’s making a solid point and his graphs are proof of something.

Only 6 defenders compared to 12 forwards, gotta give every forward enough ice time. Also it's less taxing on the legs to be a defender, you skate less at full speed in general. Goalies play the whole 60 because there's no skating involved. So there's the reason.

He's right though.. Slaf looked bad compared to KK. But you can tell that the raw skills are there and his size is impressive for 18. He's gonna be a good one. How good? Well that remains to be seen.

The fact is we haven't found a center who can take his PK minutes. Those should be cut in half at the very least IMO.

Slaf did not put up a 1.6 ppg in liiga, read again.

When did I ever say he scored 1.6 ppg in Liiga? I literally said around 10 points in 30 games. Turns out it was 10 in 31. Not sure what kind of math you learned, but 10 out of 31 is not 1.6.

Perhaps you should take your own advice an "read again", where did I say he scored 1.6 ppg in Liiga?

10 points is 10 points. What do you think that chart proves? That Aho scored... 0.1 more then Slaf in his year 17-18 year old season in Liiga? When Aho scored 40 I'm pretty sure he was 19,,,,,, the year prior was only marginally statistically better than Slaf's.

And yea, Kotka scored 29 in 57 as a 17 year old. That's nice.... he's been an absolute disappointment since, so maybe it's for the best that Slaf only had 10 in 31.

Or Kakko....... um absolute failure.... who cares if he scored more than Slaf in Liga? He sucks now.

None of that matters in terms of what is being discussed. AT ALL. Like it will not determine the level of player that ANY of these players became/become. Aho, Rant, Hintz and Barkov are really the only success stories out of that entire list. So based on your correlative analysis, only 4 out of 16, so 1/4 of teens that performed decent in Liiga actually translate that to the NHL.

Granlund has been ok at best. Lehkonen is talented but required the ideal situation to actually perform, and even then he's a role player at best. Teravainen's career has been all over the place. Kapenen is a solid bottom 6 player.

If we went by that chart, and the idea that it is somehow significant, then Kakko should be nearly as good as Laine or Barkov.... but he's not even close.

In fact, outside of Laine's 1st season, he's been a giant disappointment as well.

So all this chart does is show that around 1/4 of 17 year olds that perform well or better in Liiga actually end up reaching their ceiling. It doesn't say anything at all about Slaf, his trajectory or what level of player he will become.

I'm still laughing, hell you want Kakko? I'll trade Kakko straight up for Slaf in a heartbeat. Kakko destroyed Liiga as a teen...... don't care one bit. I'd trade 4 Kakko's for 1 Slaf. You want Granlund for Slaf? According to your chart, Granlund should be winning his 2nd or 3rd Hart trophy by now.

What's this personal vendetta against Slaf about anyway? Something to do with Slovaks? Just him personally? It's a curious obsession indeed.

LOL. Way to completely lose the plot. Nice job gaslighting, taking an isolated clip of a sentance and suggesting it means something completely different than what it actually means.

I didn't say nothing matters. I said none of THAT which was specifically quoted actually matters in the context of what is being discussed.

What a disingenuous and misleading quote... completely removed from context.

What I wrote was.... "None of THAT matters in terms of what is being discussed."

When you read books, or magazines, do you always isolate bits and pieces so you can pretend they mean something other than what they mean in order not to have to deal with the extreme cognitive dissonance reality causes when in conflict with your own solipsism?

It's a big universe sure. But we are talking about an absolutely meaningless chart in regard to what is being discussed. When I was 12 I was a little league all star and could hit homeruns out of minor league staduims and could already pitch 60 mph....... shoot, where's my 100 million dollar yankees contract? Oh that's right, tore my achillies in highschool, took 2 seasons off, fell behind, lost interest and never returned to taking it seriously after highschool. No two humans have the same life path, career path or development path. Even those that appear similar are not the same because there are just too many variables. Most of which, we are not even aware of.

Yeah brother it’s all meaningless. There is no path... we're just floating out in space

Since you're being so sincere, I'll be sincere too. I hated the Bergevin regime and all its accoutrements and got really into chatting about the Habs (on twitter, sometimes on reddit, though it's a cesspit worse than twitter) -- I noticed some patterns in the comments but the overarching impression was that the Habs Religion is very much alive. The Habs Religion states that the Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club is infallible -- it cannot fail, it can only be failed. Galchenyuk failed the Habs, Drouin failed the Habs, Kotkaniemi failed the Habs, etc. Bergevin did his best. Bergevin wasn't that bad. etc.

Fast forward some years.

And then we endure one of the worst years in Habs history -- maybe the worst ever, I think I saw that somewhere -- and we were 'rewarded' with the 1OA. And what did the brilliant minds of Bobrov, Gorton & Hughes do? They drafted the guy who doesn't produce points and has low hockey IQ. Within a few days Habs fans (here and elsewhere) loved it.

I don't buy it. There isn't a single bit of analysis that tells me he's worth risking a 1OA on. I know a majority of scouts said he's the 1OA, but they said the same about Yakupov. I trust my judgement -- and since the season started (and for Slaf ended) I've been given no reason to doubt my judgement. The guy was not NHL-ready, he was not a worthy 1OA (even if Wright wasn't either), and the obsessive way which Habs fans deny his weakness will instantly turn into an obsessive character assassination like they did to PK Subban, Alex Galchenyuk Andrei Kovalev, and every Habs player who failed the Habs.

That Liiga prospects table is just one attempt to demonstrate how bad of a prospect he was. But it's from the past. We don't need to look at Liiga numbers ever again -- he was awful in the NHL as well.

There's no need to read again. Perhaps you should read again. I have nothing to do with expathabs. And I think you missed the part where I said "You're both wrong."

Your issue is with him. You "read again". I never claimed he put up 1.6 ppg.in Liiga.

The point was, Liiga is better than the OHL, so it doesn't matter how many points someone put up in the OHL compared to Liiga as a 17 year old. No matter what Expathabs is claiming.

So maybe you can comprehend what is being said. Comprende? Maybe you'll notice, I don't care what fake numbers Expathabs claims, I never made those claims and they have nothing to do with my response. Where I stated how many points Slaf actually scored in Liiga.... and it still doesn't reflect negatively upon him.....

It seems like the entire point when right over your head. So take your own advice, "read again".

You laugh but Slaf becoming better than Kakko (or Lafrenierre for that matter) is no guarantee, both these guys have actually looked good this season. Teravainen career point/game averages to 57 points /82 games. Granlund's is 54 points/ 82 games. Laine has been producing at a 76 points / 82 game rate last 2 years. If you are calling these guys names like 'ok at best', 'all over the place', 'giant disappointment', I'm curious what you actually think Slaf's career trajectory is and what he will need to achieve not be a disappointment.
