Ritchie is a Hyman replacement in contract alone in that we now get Ritchie for $2.5 mil to try and fill the role of Hyman who we had at $2.25 mil previously.

Ritchie is bigger and more physical than Hyman, but the thing people are going to notice most is the skating and playmaking when comparing them side by side, where Hyman comes out ahead.

Its definitely going to be different dynamic having Ritchie trying to fill those shoes.

Are you seriously suggesting Hyman as a playmaker? Lol

Better playmaker than Ritchie. IMO

Ritchie is more bull in a china shop and not as polished and well rounded.

But I'm interested to see the different dynamic of bigger more physically imposing player on the wing in the top 6, it isn't an element we haven't had recently and its something the core 4 lack.

Having that element on the ice with them might make his teammates more inclined to engage more or at least venture more into the high traffic areas know Ritchie is there.

You could set your watch with Hyman in that he was always going to give you a full effort and compete like clock work. Ritchie goes run on that same system.

Nobody thinks Ritchie is as good as Hyman so not sure who you're talking to.

Perhaps not, but Wilson's career highs are only 22g and 44 points. And he's generally played with better players.

Guys like Tom Wilson aren't primarily valued for their offense though. It's all the running around, intimidation and side show stuff plus offense that makes him a special asset. Interested to see how Nick Ritchie integrates with the Leafs and I think it's a positive signing but if he was anywhere near a Wilson, the Bruins would have kept him.

You’ll be pleasantly surprised then. Check out Kase’s 20 goal season. Some pretty assists from Ritchie on more than a few of them. Wouldn’t mind a Ritchie Kampf Kase line actually.

Agreed. Hyman does a lot of things well and playmaking is not one of them

If have to also factor in the players role. When the Matthews line is on the ice and they dump the puck in who is going to go and get it and regain possession in the OZone?

When you're standing the crease screening the goalie and occupying the defense while taking a beating creating time and space for your linemates so they can play make and score a goal, your contribution wasn't a fancy pass on the play but it often plays a part in the goal without an official assist on the play. The player that needs to sacrifice his body and his own personal stats for the good of the team, is one most overlooked when their play results in a goal.

Perhaps not everyone knows this but Hyman was a finalist and runner-up to Jack Eichel for the Hobey Baker in 2015 as the best all around player in College hockey.

THE HOBEY BAKER MEMORIAL AWARD - CHARACTER MATTERS

Teamwork. Dedication. Integrity. Exceptional play. Humility. And, above all, character. These are the values that set the game of hockey, and those who play it, apart from any other. They are also the values that the Hobey Baker Award honors each year.

The most coveted award in collegiate hockey, the Hobey Baker Award is given to the top NCAA men’s ice hockey player in the nation. Winners are chosen not for raw skill or stats or character alone, though those are important. They are selected for everything they do.

Candidates must:
• Exhibit strength and character, both on and off the ice
• Contribute to the integrity of the team
• Display outstanding skills in all phases of the game
• Show scholastic achievement and sportsmanship

2015
Winner: Jack Eichel, F, Boston University
Zane McIntyre, G, North Dakota*
Zach Hyman, F, Michigan

Leafs are losing quite a bit here with Hyman's departure in character and other tangible and intangible characteristics and was one hell of team player that gave everything he had whenever he played.

Big difference between consistently driving to the net, regularly creating traffic, and just swooping in to pot an occasional loose puck.

Yup.

I think he's referring to playoffs goals, not regular season (less meaningless) goals.

Yeah if there's anything all Leaf fans should know by now, it's that the regular season and the playoffs are two completely different animals.

Also according to the standings.

They arent quite as good when their 3 $11m guys just stop scoring tho.

They aren't quite as good in the playoffs where they've been a sub .500 team forever. And especially series deciding games where they were outscored I think it was 11-2 over the last 3 games and 18-6 over the last 4. Or games where they had a chance to close out the series where they're 0-7 over the last 4 years.

Any ideas on why it is that the bigger the stakes, the worse we play?

No I agree. Ritchie isn't going to do any of those things to the same extent. I probably should have said Wilson Lite.
