Agreed. Hyman does a lot of things well and playmaking is not one of them
If have to also factor in the players role. When the Matthews line is on the ice and they dump the puck in who is going to go and get it and regain possession in the OZone?
When you're standing the crease screening the goalie and occupying the defense while taking a beating creating time and space for your linemates so they can play make and score a goal, your contribution wasn't a fancy pass on the play but it often plays a part in the goal without an official assist on the play. The player that needs to sacrifice his body and his own personal stats for the good of the team, is one most overlooked when their play results in a goal.
Perhaps not everyone knows this but Hyman was a finalist and runner-up to Jack Eichel for the Hobey Baker in 2015 as the best all around player in College hockey.
THE HOBEY BAKER MEMORIAL AWARD - CHARACTER MATTERS
Teamwork. Dedication. Integrity. Exceptional play. Humility. And, above all, character. These are the values that set the game of hockey, and those who play it, apart from any other. They are also the values that the Hobey Baker Award honors each year.
The most coveted award in collegiate hockey, the Hobey Baker Award is given to the top NCAA men’s ice hockey player in the nation. Winners are chosen not for raw skill or stats or character alone, though those are important. They are selected for everything they do.
Candidates must:
• Exhibit strength and character, both on and off the ice
• Contribute to the integrity of the team
• Display outstanding skills in all phases of the game
• Show scholastic achievement and sportsmanship
2015
Winner: Jack Eichel, F, Boston University
Zane McIntyre, G, North Dakota*
Zach Hyman, F, Michigan
Leafs are losing quite a bit here with Hyman's departure in character and other tangible and intangible characteristics and was one hell of team player that gave everything he had whenever he played.
