I wish this were an excuse, but why did her overpay Marner? Was he sleeping with his mom?
Hmmmm

Dubas tries to sign Mitch for a reported 8 maybe 9 which Marner was actually considering until Dubas laid down for his bright boy to the tune of 11.6 over a couple of days in Feb. Do you really wonder why Mitch blew a gasket and played hardball with Dubas?

It’s weird that the NHLPA is looking at it. Would it beimplying that this hurts the player side of things?

It was obviously brought to their attention by the Leafs. I imagine after the presser stunt and all the circumstantial crap around the contracts and NMCs lining up, the Leafs are pissed off.

What do you think? I thought there was enough to warrant investigating things days ago as well and I am just some nobody.

Hmm the gm lays down for Matthews the player he shares an agent with

Fights Will and Mitch hammer and tongs

Seriously, I've heard and have had enough of the BS.

Do any of you ever wonder why no team post his PeeWee years have ever put a C on him.

Do you ever wonder why multiple players have punched, face washed, cross checked and generally roughed Matthews up and only once did any Leaf offer any pushback
Actually only time Matty ever was a captain was nhl all star game .. even in Quebec peewee tournament he was never a captain .. but kid always had a laser beam of a shot even as a kid .. he is just not a leader but that doesn't mean he can't help our team .. only guy we got is current captain JT but he can't skate .. but this Dubie thing is really childish stuff .. someone trying to smear him .. i don't like it

I made some very calm and level-headed arguments in 2019 that the unprecedented dramatic overpayments stunk of something beyond mere incompetence and should be investigated.

From 2019: Dubas overpayments are so extreme that I’m suspicious of illegal activity. If there’s nothing there, then there’s nothing there. It’s just a suspicion.

Or like this one below. Very calm and level-headed. You have to click the links to see my post. Those words below aren't mine for some reason.

This is a good one too.

That's how I read it; Appearances matter.

One could argue that conflicts on either side could cause issues. The process itself is compromised bi-directional. Player association could be just front running something more.

Is that actually confirmed. Good riddance. No matter what way I look at it, its just too obvious a conflict of interest if true

Now that's funny
I'm sure someone could doctor this up.

I have no idea what’s going on… I would have just assumed that if there were shenanigans, it would be the NHL that would be doing the investigating Dubas-Wasserman-Matthews? The NHLPA taking point would seem to imply that the player side (Matthews?) is being hurt by whatever is going on. Just confusing is all.

So much controversy revolving around Dubas.

If the Leafs had this knowledge on hand (which they would have considering they were literally negotiating with Dubas agent during his initial contract as well as the extension while also knowing who represented Matthews) it obviously wasn't a problem with them earlier otherwise Shanny wouldn't have had an extension offer earlier

If it was leaked by the Leafs it was probably to put a bit of rain on Dubas' parade

Lol. Sounds like somebody really wanted to make a story, notified the NHLPA, and were given a dismissive "yeah, yeah, we'll review it" answer, which they've woven into "DUBAS UNDER INVESTIGATION!". They're not even the same agents. Such a nothingburger.
If you're not aware, agents who work at the same agency have weekly meetings where they discuss and share information about clients. They all "get on the same page" about their clients, thus leading to huge conflicts of interest. That is why the NHLPA is investigating.

Another piece of sloppy business by Kyle Dubas. Unsurprising.

Makes you wonder why a hockey agent would need a hockey agent to represent him, doesn't it?

It's like a plumber hiring someone to fix a toilet clog at his house.
It's pretty standard for someone to hire an agent to conduct a contract negotiation on their behalf. It's also why lawyers hire lawyers to represent them. They provide an arms length buffer so they can negotiate better on their client's behalf.

Kyle hiring an agent isn't the problem. Kyle being so careless as to hire an agent who works at the same firm as those representing players is the problem.

If so, wouldn’t the NHL be looking at it more aggressively than the NHLPA?

Yep. The reason the NHLPA would be investigating to see if the player's interests were somehow harmed by the potential conflict of interest.

I doubt anyone thinks that was the case with Matthews. The players union doesn't care about the teams position. Based on the info we have so far it's likely just a formality to make sure they don't get accused of not doing their due diligence

This just in from NHL insider Frank Seravalli, former Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas is under review for a potential violation in his failed negotiations with the Leafs last week.

Officially Seravalli reports that the NHL is reviewing the relationship between Dubas and his agent at the high-profile Wasserman agency for potential violation of the NHLPA Certified Agent regulations.

Direct wording of the rule in question:

Agents are prohibited from … representing, providing services to, either directly or indirectly, or engaging in or proposing to engage in business ventures with … any officer, employee or independent contractor of an NHL Club, other Professional Hockey Club or Canadian Major Junior Hockey Club or any other entity affiliated with any of the foregoing, including but not limited to coaches, general managers, scouts and locker room personnel.“

Personally, I didn't even know this was a rule and it strikes me as kind of funny. After all, isn't the agent simply working in the best interests of his client? If I'm an agent for Dubas or Matthews, I'm simply trying to get them the best deal possible with no real regards as to how the two affect each other.

In any case, Seravalli reports that the NHL warned teams back in 2022 that these types of dealings will be more strictly enforced moving forward and it looks now like Dubas is the first team employee to be under review. It's unclear what the penalty is for violating this rule and whether or not that penalty will ultimately be made public.

Also, just for clarity's sake, Kyle didn't even have to hire an agent to conduct his contract negotiation. He could have hired a lawyer, which many agents are themselves. A lawyer would be able to redline and relay deal points to Kyle and negotiate on his behalf just like any agent would.

I would wager that many GMs go this route. Hiring an agent that works for an agency that reps players is surprisingly dumb, even for Kyle Dubas.
