Feel kinda bad for Samsonov, he obviously has the tools to be a high-level NHL goalie but the toolbox is broken. Hopefully he can make a comeback after some mental work.

Caps absolutely did not “win” the Samsonov situation ha. He was a 1st round pick that walked for free after his entry level deal. Terrible scouting, development, and asset management. (Samsonov’s apparent immaturity plays a role too)

But the biggest failure in this whole mess is that GMBM used the poor goalie play as an excuse and somehow thought running it back with essentially the same aging team + keumper was going to be the fix.

The biggest failure is you thinking GMBM is running a one-year plan and thought this was a scapegoat and not part of a larger process, a 2-3 year overhaul/reload that doesn't involve many bottom finishes to reward the veteran core and thus requires better goalies.

Caps didn't fail in the scouting either, Samsonov had every tool, he just ended up being a true basket case. It happens and pinning any organization too hard for drafting a goalie that didn't pan out is a bit of a misguided effort. Yeah, usually you don't want to take fliers on them with 1st round picks, but you also yield to talent and the BPA and a mentally-there Samsonov would... still be on the Caps, first of all, and frankly right in the mix of the big boys like Vasilevsky and Shesterkin in terms of "franchise anchor" goaltenders... he just can't do it.

Remember how actively and for how long I've been shitting on both Vanecek and Samsonov and all I'd received was "they're young and promising and you're always so negative, f outta here". Turned out they both suck even worse than I could've ever imagined. Now gimme my deserved cookies, you pseudo experts.

Yeah it was everyone against you. Right.

WRT to other comments about GMBM blowing it, do people realize how many draft picks on other teams don't pan out?

There are websites that show NHL games played and stats for every draft. Go look.

I think this just underscores how much more risky it is to take a goaltender in the first round. Forwards are the easiest to evaluate followed by defenseman. For goalies, the mental part of the game is just as important (if not more so) than the athletic and It's really hard to accurately gauge the mental fortitude of a young goalie.

There are plenty of physically gifted goaltenders who don't make it because they are deficient on the mental side of the game. There are also plenty of goalies with average athletic ability who are #1 goaltenders because of the way they "think" the game.

Goaltenders take the longest of any position to mature and it can be a real crapshoot selecting them. The long development time and the unpredictability of producing an NHL capable goalie means that you always need several young keepers in your system at all times. That's why I would rather draft a goaltender or two in the later rounds than blow a 1st rounder.

Pretty much, as the Caps keep demonstrating.

I think there is still a small amount of merit when your staff truly believes that's the BPA in a weaker draft class, but overall it's not worth the gamble when even great goaltenders can have what seems like entire seasons that just never come together.

"less than usual but occasional" contribution doesn't work for goalies the way it works for skaters in a down year.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed goaltender Ilya Samsonov on waivers. Samsonov’s last appearance came on December 29nd, when he allowed the Columbus Blue Jackets six goals on only 21 shots.

Samsonov’s placement on waivers was coupled with Toronto’s AHL club recalling ECHL goaltender Luke Cavallin, something that Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman thinks may be a sign that Dennis Hildeby could receive a call-up to the NHL squad should Samsonov clear waivers.

They can't say we didn't warn them.

Ha! Where is this group of Vanacek and Samsonov supporters?

Might be a fun poll to rank the Capitals drafted goalies over the past 14 years.

Varlamov
Holtby
Grubauer
Vanacek
Samsonov
Neuvirth

Who am I forgetting?

Eh, you roll the dice. Draft picks are young. They often mature into professionalism. Sometimes they don't. It's not easy to predict.

Flyers could really make the Playoffs. They not only keep picking up points but actually look really good doing so.

Holy hell. That’s the biggest prospect swap in how long? I actually like this for Philly… not a huge fan of Gauthier but he’ll probably make me eat my words. Huge fan of Drysdale if he can stay healthy, he looked like he was playing varsity vs JV at North Dakota.

Good for Cutter. The draft is stupid so I think it's neat when a draftee tells the drafting team to piss off.

Drysdale is up there in terms of my overrated young players list. Maybe it's all because of injuries, but he's been unimpressive so far. No certainty he'll be healthy going forward either.

Unless Gauthier is a huge character concern then I give Anaheim the edge in this trade.

Really, doesn’t wanna play for Philly? Kind of odd. Seems like a fairly popular sports town, decent city. Is Torts really that scary?

I think Philly made out decent in that deal. You’d think a prospect who doesn’t want to play for your team would have less value but apparently not. Drysdale *could* be a nice return if he can stay healthy. Plus they get a 2nd rounder on top of it. It’s in 2025 but still the Ducks aren’t exactly lighting the world on fire.

Ducks get another high-end prospect. Zegras, Terry, Carlsson, Gauthier, Zellweger, Luneau, Mintyukov, Perreault, Mctavish. In a few years they will be a real handful.

Even Dionicio looked brilliant at times in the WJC.
