That Cousins hit was brutal. I would have lost my mind if someone hit me like that and if a Caps player did it I’d expect them to get tossed and maybe more. There’s so many things that can go terribly wrong when you run a guy from behind into the boards, especially at that speed. It’s at best reckless and shows no respect for your opponent. I’d have preferred for Cousins to get ejected or for him to have to answer to Gudbrandson in a fight but I have zero sympathy for Cousins. The turtling was real weak too.

Punching a guy half your size in the back of the head while he's turtling has no part in the game.
I agree with this. I don't entirely disagree with taking a run at him, though. Gudbranson is lucky he didn't leave the game on a stretcher.

Well, if you believe the hit was really bad then it's really the referees that dropped the ball here. Agree to disagree on the hit. I don't think i'm alone with the take that it's closer to 2 then 5. Craig Button on TSN thought it was a boarding minor too. Gudbranson obviously didn't.

That said, these kinds of hits happen. I still don't want to see turtling midget hammered on the back of his head by 6'5 Gudbranson. As mentioned before too, boarding is something that happens in a fast game. Gudbranson has been dishing those hits himself. Punching someone on the back of the head while he's laying down has nothing to do with hockey.

Why would you expect Cousins to fight Gudbranson there? That's an obvious mis-match. Again, switch the scenario. Nick Cousins is 5'11 and 186 lbs. Nikita Kucherov is 5'11 and 181 lbs and has been tossed for boarding someone before. Should be fight Erik Gudbranson (6'5, 222 lbs) in a fight like that which obviously isn't a staged fight as Gudbranson is absolutely furious and looking to kill him? That's just f***ing stupid. Should we expect Connor McMichael to fight Gudbranson after a hit like that? No f***ing way.

Perhaps i'm alone with this take.

Why is he being waived? Is it his 5% shooting %? Something else?
Thought I remember seeing a quote from Berube earlier this season talking about his 200 ft game or lack of give a shit being a reason he was being scratched. Not heard anything since then.

Ok thanks. I think that's kind of the book on him, right? Has always been a 1-way player that needs a lot of hand-holding.

Put him on a line with Milano who makes half as much and see if Sonny's motor combines with Vrana's skills to form some kind of Voltron

If Carbo can work some magic with Mantha and possibly even with Kuzy, maybe he can figure out how to show Jake where the defensive zone is located?

Oh yes, i'm going to blame him.

Whether you think it's a bad hit or not, punching someone in the back of the head while turtling is a move that has nothing to do with hockey. I wish boarding and hits like that wasn't part of the game either, but it's a fast game and those kind of hits unfortunately happen. Physical player like Gudbranson himself should know that very well, too. He has been ejected for boarding before. There are clean star players that sometimes cross the very same line and board someone. Of the top of my head, McDavid, DeBrincat, Svechnikov and from the Capitals there are atleast Ovechkin, Wilson, Fehervary.

Would that still be your reaction if you swap one of those players (other than Wilson who can handle himself) for Cousins and Gudbranson goes after them like that? I don't think so.

The league has changed….but if you want to see what it was like, YouTube some Dave Brown fight videos, specifically the one done to Nazareth’s Hair of the dog.

I’m no Gudrandson fan. I’m shocked he’s still playing in the NHL honestly.
Me neither - but Cousins should have been thrown out of the game for that hit. Right in the back of the numbers while Gudbranson is totally in a vulnerable position a couple of feet from the boards. You don't want to get attacked by Gudbranson because you're too small - don't make such a dirty hit. Panthers rep for stirring shit and then hiding behind the refs also doesn't help Cousins here.

That after Cousin's initial hit total natural for Gubs reaction there as he did freak out just couldn't get ahold of Cousins there. I did the same thing in an adult pickup where I was racing against a German player (who had played adult pro full check hockey in his own country) to retrieve a puck and he checked me from behind head first into the boards and admittedly I got up and tried to decapitate him with my stick before my brain even turned back on.
The Cousins hit was dangerous and IMO showed intent to injure. The only reason it didn't lead to significant injury is that Gudbranson is a huge SOB. I was shocked they didn't toss him from the game. Refs lost control by not making the right call.
Agreed this is on the refs for the later ugliness. Sure Cousins would probably need to answer the bell in a later game ala The Code but at least there is more distance from the initial emotions. Gubs had intent to injure/hurt in the later mess.
