Alexbro, didn’t realize you went through the whalers leaving.
Yeah man, I spent a good chunk of my life in Connecticut. My family had season tickets to the Whalers. I played probably 3-4 times at the Civic Center. I have a big box full of old Whalers gear (jerseys, hats, Starter Jacket, signed pictures, etc). Crushed me when they moved, especially the way it went down. It essentially was a shady behind-the-scenes agreement between then-Governor Rowland and then-Whalers owner Peter Karmanos to get the team out of CT so Rowland could build a new stadium to entice the Patriots to move and Karmanos could earn relo fees and tax write offs because his investment portfolio was tanking. (Rowland ended up being impeached and served prison time on a fraud conviction and Karmanos was sued by his sons because he illegally liquidated their trust fund to pay off his other losses. Both awesome dudes, clearly).

I found the Caps when we moved to the DC area. My travel team played at the Caps old practice facility so we ended up seeing the Caps a lot. My brother played with a few of the Capitals players’ sons and his coach for a few years was Tim Army (who was an awesome dude). Ended up finding my “new home” as a Caps fan and the rest is history.

Everything has worked out fine and I love the Caps but I’ll always hate how we lost our team. Save the Whale.

Damn, now it makes sense why the announcers were so cryptic on the move during the last whalers game rebroadcast on YouTube.

It was bullshit. Karmanos gave an ultimatum for fans to buy a certain amount of season tickets and if we did they’d keep the team in Hartford and then he raised the season ticket threshold three or four times that final season. Each time a new level got hit he made up some shit about needing to raise the threshold and the final hurdle he set was impossible.

In a sad twist of fate, he was probably right moving the Whalers out of Hartford because Connecticut’s economy took a dump in the years after so he got lucky with the outcome but he made the decision for all the wrong reasons. Watching them win the Cup with guys who were on the Whalers really sucked. I was happy for the players but I wished nothing but sadness and failure for Karmanos. Him winning a Cup made me want to punch something.

Didn't expect this. And the article provides basically no useful information. Such a tragedy and this is just perplexing.

It is very weird - they've arrested somebody but can't name him why? Because they haven't formally charged him yet I suppose?

It can only be one person..

Definition of manslaughter is probably different in UK vs USA. Would think the prosecution will be saying that the player's actions were reckless and careless and lead to the fatal injury?

But the player who's skate made the cut was already named. Who is this and what are they saying he did?

Alexbro, I can get you a new whalers jersey in a trade if you don’t want to pay them now…

Here’s a video of him doing this type of leg kick move in the past. If it’s something he has a history with, that might be problematic.

If he intended to impede Johnson by kicking out his leg - and that can be deemed as a non-hockey play, outside the scope of the profession - then that’s how he could be in manslaughter territory. To be sure, it’s not that he intended to kill or even harm Johnson, but if it’s a reckless move that could foreseeably hurt someone, then that might get him in trouble.

It’s an interesting case, just because of the assumption of risk that’s inherent in playing any contact sport. If he does get charged, and it goes to trial - I could see the case turning on whether evidence of similar prior bad acts (like the above video) is ruled admissible.

I obviously am no expert in UK law (I only took a quick look at their manslaughter laws out of morbid curiosity), and am just speaking generally since US common law came from UK. Who knows what other contemporaneous evidence they have as far as things that were happening on the ice - what was being said, if the two had a spat, or prior altercations.

In any event, it will be really sad if this accident destroys another life. But, we’ll have a clearer picture once some more facts come to light.

I have watched a few youtube videos discussing the incident, including opinions of former hockey players, and I am now of the view that he recklessly lashed out with his leg / skate to try and stop Johnson. Originally I thought he collided with the other player and it spun him around but there is no indication of that anymore. As I heard it described several times, he took a bad angle and Johnson had him beat, so he threw out his leg to try and stop him.

Did he expect to cut Johnson's throat and kill him? Of course not. But he certainly was prepared to do whatever it took to stop Johnson, and that was a reckless and dangerous play.

I don't need to hold back: I think the guy is an absolute lowlife and I hope there is some kind of punishment. At the very least he should NEVER play hockey again. I think it speaks volumes that he returned to the ice for a home game (and I was apalled that he got a standing ovation). If he truly felt remorse or accepted some accountability and responsibility for his actions he wouldn't be able to get back on the ice and play. He's a total POS.

Accidental outcome, sure, but there was nothing accidental about the contact. He pretty clearly wanted to use his leg to obstruct Johnson's path.
Tripping/obstruction is a common minor foul in many sports. So where do we draw the line?

Soccer, a player trips another, that player falls, hits head on ground, a post, another player (pick one), then dies.......we're charging the tripper with the death?

I think it's pretty common sense where we draw the line. A soccer player trips another player dozens of times a game, every game. Why? Because it's part of the game and the potential for injury to an opponent is low. And as you mentioned, a player tripping would need the same odds as being struck by lightning a few times in order to make that fall fatal. The worst thing that can typically happen if a player trips another player is a broken bone and even that is extremely rare.

How many times a game does a hockey player use his leg and skate to obstruct another player? Zero, because they're wearing knives on the bottom of their feet and it's reckless and dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. There's a "no kicking the puck into the goal" rule because they deliberately do not want guys directing that skates at other players in any situation.

tripping attempts (by foot, leg, hell by hand..lol) happen often enough.... certainly not some unicorn.

What exactly are the chances of a player death by skate blade? Certainly, lower than a person being struck by lightning. This just reeks of looking to blame someone/anyone honestly.

That hit was freakish....not sure what to think of the flying leg, but it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I saw somewhere that this was not the first time he threw his leg up like that. I reckon a big part of the investigation/reasons for his arrest stems from his past actions. So i guess there could be other players who will testify that he pulled something similar against them.

Everything else aside, i have not seen somebody's leg shoot up like that, not during my time playing and not during any of the games i ever watched....My personal opinion is that it was not a complete accident, looks more like some stupid shit he was able to pull before and get away with it in the past.
This case will get dragged through the courts for years between appeals and everything else. Though i wonder what the league contract stipulates as far as players culpability go.

Depends how you calculate it... A kid in CT died like that last year. An Army player needed surgery to save his life earlier this year, and it's quite likely he would have died if it wasn't for the quick response of the trainers on site. There was that Malarchuk incident, and then Zednik more recently. Didn't result in death, but like... probably not even a matter of inches there.

Math? ;).

“On average 28 people die a year in the US from lightening strikes”….

There are several hundred people in the US for every one person in the US that plays hockey. And lightning can strike anywhere at any time. It's a relatively small window of time where a hockey player would be in a game or practice situation where they could get cut like that. The math will show that a hockey player involved in a game or practice with other players is more likely to die this way per quantity of time compared to a person getting struck by lightning over that same period of time.

I was thinking about just being struck by lightning, but 90% of people who get struck by lightning live, so if you want to limit it to deaths, it's even clearer.

I need to see the math….;) because if you’re telling me death by skate blade is more common than death by lightning bolt…..I’m a non-believer. And yes, I meant struck dead by if that wasn‘t obvious.

Using extremely conservative assumptions...
