Quinton "bust" Byfield sure would have been a neat trade target this past summer.

All I see is 1 assist. No more, no less. Who cares about the inputs; only the outputs matter.

But wait! Are you now counting “style points” in your spreadsheets?

How does that work exactly: xStylePoints/60 vs actual StylePoints/60.

Can they still be “style points” if they are imaginary? Yes, clearly this opens up a bevy of new philosophical questions - a slippery slope indeed.

Perhaps you should stick to not watching the games, lest you become distracted and confused, lol.

To be fair, Byfield is having a decent season and looks to have turned a corner. Still early days, of course.

And I'm not even sure LA were seriously entertaining trade offers. That seems more a case of fan speculation.

Of course - I was just being a jerk, and having a bit of fun with the analytics mindset, lol.

Nothing at all against Byfield personally - in fact, I thought this was an intriguing idea in the offseason. Unfortunately, it’s so hard to know what kind of value Wilson would have had in a trade.

Not even exploring the idea (per GMBM) could be a big “what if” hanging over the rebuild, and certainly for the duration of Tom’s new contract.

Well if there's any consolation (as someone who wasn't fully for it) just remember that in another year or so he'll be as good as he was ever going to be and will only ever decline from there until he's a replacement player, because that's how all players work on a consistent basis.

So really they dodged a bullet by not paying any sort of package for him.

Byfield for Wilson was never on the table, atleast not after the Kings moved to acquire P-L Dubois and even every report before and after that indicated that they wanted to add a veteran center to keep up with the Oilers who they face yearly in the Playoffs. They still need a goalie so what makes you think they would have been interested in acquiring both of those guys? All that while signing both to long-term contracts?

If there ever was a Wilson -offer on the table what makes you think it would have looked any bit different than the package they sent for Dubois?

Move on already.

Why won't other teams just trade us good young prospects? For cheap?
Because "externally" Byfield looked like he wasn't going to live up to his 2nd overall pick. He has really only looked good this season and fhere were rumblings that he might suck.

Seems like the Kings (of course) knew more than we did and he just needed somet time.

I don't know for sure if LA would have done Byfield for Wilson. I think it would have been considered with a sweetener, though this is mere speculation. But not even making Wilson available for trade closed a lot of doors that could have potentially opened up even if Byfield in particular wasn't available. I think that's what's most disappointing. There was no creativity shown during a time in the franchise's history that demands it, and I feel like they didn't really learn their lesson with some of the problematic contracts on the team now.

Eh, we don't know what GMBM has discussed and with whom. If another GM were to inquire about a particular player - other than someone untouchable like Ovie - then imo any competent GM would respond, "Hypothetically speaking, what would you offer for said player?" That doesn't mean the player is available for a trade in the way some guys (eg Kuz) are advertised as available, but it's wise stewardship to know what your guys might bring. This would be especially relevant if the player were about to become a UFA and you're trying to figure out how much $$ to offer. The other GM's response may or may not be close to legitimate, but it's still worth a few minutes of convo. It could be that GMBM told others that 43 was not available, but if he did entertain offers, knowing the closed club of NHL execs, it's unlikely to come out.

But Elliotte Friedman reported that he's never heard a team deny trade rumors as aggressively as the Capitals did. To the point where MacLellan was getting visibly irritated at the insinuation. So I tend to believe they never even explored the trade avenue.

I would say this, I don’t think we would be anything close to playoff contention if we had traded Wilson in the off-season.

Was he actually available or is this just wishful thinking?
In 2023, he was brought up in mostly the less credible rumor sites (although he was still brought up in multiple sites). So take that with a decent pinch of salt. He was more credibly linked to trade rumors in 2021, when the Kings were looking at Jack Eichel.

The player more credibly brought up, and eventually actually traded, was Gabriel Vilardi. I wanted him and supported a Wilson for Vilardi move - but Vilardi has ended up on LTIR once again after just 3 games this season.
