How high I was on Zach Benson was referenced in the last GDT so I have to post this news. Benson has been so good that they are going to burn a year of his ELC and presumably keep him up all season.

The sample size is small, but he's 35th of 611 qualified NHL skaters in GAR/60 and the best on the Sabres. All as an 18 year old rookie. I don't think Ryan Leonard is going to be bad (the numbers certainly don't suggest that), but I think Washington is going to regret missing out on Benson because he profiles to be a superstar.

I wonder if there was anyone in the draft GDT who was calling for the team to draft Benson with that pick. 🤔

There's nothing there qualitatively or quantitatively that really explains his drop to #13 overall except for the fact that he's short.

The absence of evidence is not evidence of the absence of evidence. There might be character issues or other mental stuff. Not saying there is but Laine for instance had an amazing start.

Seems unlikely. There was never any mention of this stuff and indeed he's been praised as one of the most competitive players in the draft and one of the strongest top-end forwards in the draft in terms of defense.

Players have been passed over time and time again for being small. It's reasonable to suspect that's all it is here instead of some unknown character or mental issue that never surfaced in scouting reports or the like.

Brad Marchand, Patrick Kane, Martin St Louis, Johnny Gaudreau, and Brayden Point come to mind right away. Probably more. You can be the judge of whether they are superstar enough for you I guess, but all have had impacts among the very best in the league.

I was just pissed off about missing Michkov.

No matter who they took it’d be a tier below him.

Now it seems the blow has become even bigger as we missed Benson.

I see one superstar in there at least……so my point exactly……don’t hold your breath. I hope he is though….better for the league.

Uh, Corey Perry did what . . . .??!

The unmentionable thing floating around that is rightly against Board rules to discuss but pretty weird for sure is probably how we know that we've reached the point where it would behoove the Black Hawks to maybe provide a bit more color on this.
Is this the one doing the rounds that suggests he and a certain draft pick's mother enjoyed a mutual discussion about hockey and how talented her son was?

Yes it may well turn out to be total bs - but it's easily within the realms of possibilities.

Fans of 31 teams: "Patrick Kane to DET is a great move!"

Fans of the Caps who just saw the first NHLer to get the hip resurfacing surgery just quasi-retire after it didn't respond properly: "Not so sure about that..."
I think the consensus reaction is a lot closer to the Caps reaction than you're letting on.

Also - Jovonovski and Kesler had hip resurfacing before Backstrom did

Well at least they didn’t sign him for $9 million for a couple years. Maybe they get 50 games and some PP production out of him

Its 1 year so its really almost no risk for Detroit. If he dont work out they just dont use him.

Danny Briere. Solid overall career but for few years he was considered one of the top players.

Superstars don’t just have a few years runs typically (barring major injury)….he was an all star level guy for my tastes, but further highlighting how rare small true superstars are. Not worth a big debate, I was just responding to someone else suggesting we passed on a “superstar”…

There is no debate, i fully agree with you here. Was just responding directly to the question.
