The Provorov trade has a lot of moving parts to truly sus out everyone’s value, but that seems like a lot more than I was expecting Provorov to fetch. Guess there’s always at least one (or in this case two) sucker out there who likes your garbage.

Gavrikov is...fine. But this is wild from LA's perspective. He's an ordinary second pairing dude. The term is fine from LA's perspective but to allocate close to $6 million for him is insane. The Jensen and TVR extensions suddenly look even better.

Given Gavrikov's value and the fact that Provorov went for a first and a second round pick I'd be extremely interested in seeing what the market for Fehervary is. He doesn't have the same notoriety as Gavrikov and Provorov (which would severely impact his value) but he's also much cheaper and would be under team control for longer. If I'm Washington I'm using Fehervary as a trade chip to try to upgrade the forward ranks.

He wasn’t garbage long ago, Columbus is betting a lot on a bounce back though.

He's never been particularly good. He was young and promising, but he never lived up to that promise. He was anointed as the next big thing by the Flyers front office and media, they immediately handed him huge minutes, gave him a $6.75M long term deal, but he never really justified that on the ice. At his peaks he was a solid 2nd pairing D, but more recently he's been much much worse than that.

Interesting, I thought he was pretty good a few years ago, but I don’t watch the Flyers much.

Ivan Provorov: another example of a defenseman who never improved after his early 20s seasons. Folks, it seems like there might be a trend here!

now if only you could come up with a valid definition of "improved"....because overall, many D do improve as players......maybe just not as spreadsheet filler...

I'm always interested to see players get moved into better environments and see how they do. Not like Philly was a great place to excel in as a player....

In general little to no improvement is shown when players go to better teams. I’ll try to find the original work rather than just the tweet, but it’s not surprising to me.

Dude, how the f*** are you still trying to double down on this after being wrong all year?

The trend is that when you see a data point you can troll with you're happy to ignore everything else and pretend you've been right the whole time. How does he do it? By talking absolute shit and forgetting every time he's been wrong.

1. It’s fun to troll.

2. Despite being told I am wrong, I have not been proven wrong.

It must be weird wanting sports to be entirely black/white, and entirely predictable. No triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Only spreadsheets, and numbers…so many powerful, benevolent numbers.

Just guys in practice saying:

“Man did you see the sheets this morning? Apparently I’m terrible and will never improve.”

“Tough break, buddy. Now what?”

“Well I’m only 23 and in my contract year, but I guess I’ll quit. I have no other marketable skills though…”

“Oh, I know - be a GM! The sheets say they’re all dumb.”

“Bingo.”

It's quite the opposite really. Hockey in particular is appealing to me because it is so random. Just because I enjoy the statistical and analytical part of the game doesn't mean I want to see a more determined outcome like in the NBA, for instance. Indeed I think understanding and embracing the statistical side of the game makes my opinions even less black and white than most people's, even if my opinions sometimes diverge quite a bit with others'.

I enjoy your posts. Some of them I shake my head at and mumble "here we go again" but I could probably say that about plenty of people here.

I think the biggest problem with always using advanced stats as evidence of whether a player is good or bad is that a lot of traditional hockey fans immediately switch off because they aren't convinced that advanced stats are better than the eye test. And hey, maybe the fancy stats are the real deal but I just don't have the time or interest to learn about them. And since I'm not signing players and handing out $$ and deciding who gets how much ice time, it doesn't really matter. I know who is good or bad on our team.

Edit: when I say I shake my head and mumble "here we go again" I mean it in the nicest possible way, lol. Sorry didn't mean to sound like a jerk

Huh. No clue. Where do they play? I guess I could Google it, but……nah

Lol, so true. They only sold a third of the seats for Griner's return from the gulag and most folks in WNBA cities can't even name their team or even know they have one. But it's a "travesty" that women don't get "equal pay" in sports!!!

That story never dying and trans women dominating women's sports... My head hurts. I'm all for equal pay for women and trans rights, but these particular arguments just confound me. It's like someone tripped and spilled some of their overwokeness on sports and forgot to clean it up. Prolly cuz of the COVID paper towel shortage...

So then, not really "all" for equal pay... you know which professional DC basketball team has won a championship this century? Here's a hint: not the Bullets. You know which US national soccer team has won World Cups and Olympic gold? Here's a hint: not the men.

The players--men and women both--are hired to win. They're the product. They're not the salespeople. Selling the game, league, and players and building a fan base isn't their job. Yet men who lose make exponentially more than women who win. And then you suggest it's fair for the women who win to pay for the failures of the salespeople but not for the men who lose to pay for their own failures.
