It was the greatest goal scoring season ever in the cap era anyway and it’s not particularly close. Save percentage is the lowest it’s been in a decade and the lowest it’s been since the two-line pass was removed. Goals per game are up 15% this season compared to 2007-08. PP% is up 20% compared to 2007-08. Ovechkin had a 13 goal lead on the second leading scorer in the league his season while McDavid finished a three goal lead.
Ovechkin’s 2007-08 season was the most dominant goal scoring season in the modern era. He did it when scoring was harder and he did it a level far superior to his peers. That’s nothing to take away from McDavid who may have just had the most dominant season in the modern era and is a video game create-a-player but if we’re talking about most impressive goal scoring feats in the cap era, it’s Ovi and then a wide gap before we discuss anyone else.
