Admit, we're all going to be watching for the upsets and blood baths in the playoffs, especially the first round. The first round of NHL Playoffs is one of my favorite things ever, except for Cap's.
The first two weeks of the NHL playoffs, group play in the World Cup, and the first four days of March Madness are the best.

Bruins should want no part of the Red Wings in the one verse eight playoff matchup
Would much rather play Detroit, Buffalo, Florida, Washington, or the Islanders if I’m Boston as opposed to the Pens. Pittsburgh is not a great prize for winning the Conference. Their depth isn’t great but their top six is playing very well and Jarry and CDS are capable of stealing a series. Plus nobody wants to play a hot Crosby or Malkin.

I don’t think Pittsburgh has the depth to win it all but in a best of seven I’m not counting them out against anyone.

Boston getting to fancy trying to change lines. They better put the top line back because they can’t score worth shit right now.

The Devils can tie Carolina in points if they hold onto the lead they have right now, albeit with one additional game played.

Trust the fancy stats.

Ottawa losing 4-1.

A whole lotta losers in the East wild card race!
Somehow the Caps are back in it… kind of. Detroit and Buffalo really hurt themselves losing five and four games in a row respectively as that took away their games in hand advantage. The Caps are five points behind the Islanders for 8th but the Islanders have played one more game than Washington and the Caps have them twice more. Pittsburgh looks to be a lock and will probably avoid Boston.

Their odds still are pretty terrible but not inconceivable at this point. They need to win a lot of games and hope the Islanders shit the bed, and Florida as well. They also need to sweep their remaining two games with the Islanders.

Unfortunately getting points at the rate they’ve been getting them also means they’re picking 13th at this point which puts them out of Bedard contention.

This is the problem. 3% chance at Bedard is better than 0%.

They may end up just out of the playoffs AND just out of the lottery.

Worst possible outcome.

Didn't txpd essentially predict this years ago? That Orlov would perform like an all around 1D on a different team?

(BARF)

"Three-on-three is so exciting. I love seeing it during the [NHL] regular season because I hate the shootout. It's nonstop action that you get with that," Bourque told ESPN this week. "I never played in it. Trying to coach it will be interesting."

(cool)

Another reason Bourque signed up: His sons, Chris and Ryan, have both decided to play in 3ICE this season.

Yes that would suck, but here's my question: if they get into the lottery and their ping pong ball doesn't come up--as is most likely--aren't they in more or less the same draft position as if they are a spot out of the lottery to begin with? (The lottery process confuses the f*** out of me.)

I think that's right...if they're in the last lottery spot nobody can jump them. But the main thing is 3% is non-zero and at least in the mix.

Can't remember what our chance was when we got Ovie but I recalled it wasn't top % because of NHL f***ery. Had to look it up:

14.2% and jumped over CHI and PIT

LOL

Still makes me smile.

It really is amazing to sit back and think how the bouncing of a few ping pong balls re-shaped the entire direction of this franchise for what is nearly two decades now.

Would be nice if that could happen again this year (assuming we finish in the bottom 11 teams)

Says something about the role of luck in building a succesful framchise. It is the most overlooked aspect of modern sports and imho is at least 50% of successful teams.

Its not just the luck of winning the ping pong lottery, its also having a bonafide franchise carrying superstar there when you do win. The Wizards have won the lottery a few times and been stuck with players like Kwame Brown and John Wall. Eric Johnson went #1OA a year after Sydney Crosby did, and Ekblad went 1 OA a year before McDavid did. Winning the lottery is only half of it.

The Caps are beyond lucky to have two decades of Ovi, the greatest goal scorer in NHL history.

Slight correction...they can be passed by teams behind them though the odds are long.

Right now they're in the last spot (11th) that can move up the max amount (10 places) to #1. Since there are 2 draws (for 1OA and 2OA) it's possible they could even lose 2 spots. But not likely.

This seems to emphasize the importance of tanking if you're not going to make the playoffs. You stand to not only pick in no man's land while missing the playoffs, but you could also be jumped by two other teams, in theory.
