Even before this season Sheary hasn't really been all that impressive. In a world where they’re competitive he's a third line winger with insulated deployments given his defensive deficiencies. The problem is Oshie is also a third line winger. And Backstrom is at best a 3C entering next year. And NAK is not capable in a top 6 role. So all of a sudden there's one bottom 6 forward role available on the 4th line and whoops, nowhere to give guys like Snively, McMichael, Protas, etc. a shot.

I can’t even really get behind Sheary returning at league minimum at this point.
don't get me wrong, I'm not eager to bring Sheary back. i just think it's not a huge deal. also, if they resign him, he can still be traded, maybe for more if a team wants his veteran hustle and he's cheap. it also may be that Mac isn't the guy who announces "this guy's for sale!" he says what's strategic. maybe trading a guy away from his newborn seemed harsh when the guy can be allowed to walk if need be and the loss is minimal at best either way.

I agree in theory, but do you think we can find that?

Sure. I’d give guys like Protas, Snively, McMichael, or potentially others in the system a shot at 2LW/3LW before Sheary. Their upsides aren’t particularly high IMO, but maybe they have a shot at become top 6 mainstays soon. I never really thought much of Stephenson when he was a Capital but he was able to elevate his game. Hopefully one of the young guys can do the same because we know for sure Sheary isn’t that guy.

Well i guess i agree. But for me i would also want guys like Oshie and Mantha out which would leave space for both.

Mantha can't be gone too soon. I think the negative effect of Oshie leaving on the room will be felt more than folks want to admit. That doesn't mean the if the right deal comes along Mac shouldn't make it, but it's delicate.

I guess I'm not even factoring Mantha into the equation next year. I think he's going to be gone either via trade or buyout by the start of next season. I'll believe Oshie is gone when I see it, even if I think it's time to move on from him. Same with Backstrom, though while I think Oshie could theoretically be moved Backstrom's contract is unmovable.

I'd be much more amenable to them bringing Sheary back on the cheap if they move on from Oshie.

Yeah Bäckström is staying for sure. Oshie could go and Sheary is a decent replacement depending on cost.

For me it's like Sheary might not be the solution for this team, but at least he isn't the problem.

Definitely made an impact. Hathaway dropped the gloves but didn’t fight. Boston is going to be a handful these playoffs. Anything can happen though.

What if we snuck in and then beat Boston in first round. Haha

I don't want Sheary resigned. He'll only block the likes of Snively or Frank from earning a sweater next season. He can be a compliment to another team's roster as he will now be beneficial to this team.

This fan base hasn't even begun to endure the pain and frustration that's coming our way for who know's how many seasons. There's no quick fix.

It's time to see what we have within house. As I look at the roster/line up for next season, right now I only see two spots for forwards that are open, one on the third line and one on the fourth line.

Yeah, good luck rest of the NHL (re: Boston).
Maybe, but the playoffs are an entirely different animal then the regular season. Sadly this fan base knows it only too well.

It’s wild that Toronto made 3 trades for defensemen at the deadline to ostensibly improve it. But in reality their blueline is maybe worse than it was before given their decisions on Liljegren and Sandin.

Getting both McCabe and Schenn playing similar styles at mid to bottom pairing levels was too much redundancy for Toronto. Though they got a good price on both (McCabe for 3 playoff runs at 2 million is pretty valuable in a cap era and Luke Schenn has really rounded out his game and has the nice homecoming storyline). Their biggest problem is that Rielly has regressed heavily but is completely entrenched as their 1D. Orlov and to a lesser extent Ekholm is what they should have gone after to potentially let Rielly be the 2018 Carlson for this run while someone else is Orlov-Niskanen.

Trap game, nothing to see here. Wake me up when they lay one of these in the playoffs
Is it though? They played like dog yesterday to the point that Kuch, Stammer, and Point were all benched for the 3rd to send a message. Then they respond with this effort?
