bandwagon of reason: is CMM better player than Protas? has CMM higher potential than Protas?

I think ppl shifted to the realm with lesser expectations for CMM

in slightly lol @ PIT news...
they lost Zohorna on waivers to CGY today
but had him on as 3C at practice today
a little gamble he was going to slide thru unclaimed backfires

PIT also has some cap compliance issues so they're going to have to make some executive decisions on whether to waive a Dman or 2 in Ruhwedel, PO Joseph, or Friedman

nothing big under the sun, but enjoyable to see them struggle managing assets

I don’t want to trade CMM. He will be fine. Only 21. Still needs to mature, but he is our future 3C with 2C potential later in career. Plus I think Fever is a legit 1LD In the making.

If we believe thats his ceiling 3C with potential to be 2C for parts of his career then they should trade him +1st for a player like Chychrun. Chychrun is a top LD with a really good contract for the next couple of years. Some health issues, but if McM only is a 3C then his value is bigger in a trade.

I believe McM have 2C potential with 60 points. Just will take a year or two longer than we had hoped. It takes time to develop players. McM is now entering his 4th season after the draft. In the same season Kuznetsov played 17 games for the Caps and had 9 points. He played most of that year in Russia the year after Kuznetsov played 80 games with 37 points before he had 77 points in 82 games the year after.

He doesnt have the same talent as Kuznetsov, but hopefully better work ethichs and passion fo the game and with time McM should be a solid player. His underlying stats are good and with more ice time, and better players around him together with some confidence he will hopefully be worth the wait.

Im open for going for Chycrun aswell. He fits very well with a cheap contract for the last years Caps will go for it with Ovechkin onboard. While McM doesnt look like he will have a big impact this year and maybe not the next either. Having a left side with Orlov, Chychrun and Fehervary would be a strength and Tampa have showed with Hedman, McD and Sergachev that having 3 very good players on one side is no problem. Would also give Fehervary some easier matchups as he was overworked at times last year.

Chychrun could also be a long term solution on LD with Chychrun-Fehervary with Johansen and Alexeyev competing for a spot.

It’ll probably cost more than CMM and a 1st to get Chychrun, one would think. At least one more good asset (not a fringe piece), at minimum?
I like Chychrun but I’m not sure I want to give up that much for him (Or anyone). Could he be a Cale Makar difference maker for us? Does he pair well with Carlson? I think Fever gives almost as good with less risk. Would you do CMM/first/Leason or AJF? I don’t think i would do unless we get to TDL and the window is really open. Otherwise I’m holding onto my first round pick.

Yeah... I like Fehervary but he isn't anywhere close to Chychrun, and i don't think he has similar offensive potential, either.

That CMM + 1st package likely doesn't move the needle enough. Let alone just one of those assets. But i don't think we will move our 1st round pick, atleast yet.

I suspect that Iorio might need to be part of such a package. Not sure I’d love that. But Chychrun is certainly worth trying - CMM, 1st + AA? I dunno, TDL is a long way off.

Does Chychrun have durability issues?

I don’t see a single season near 80 games played.

Missed some games last season, but the season before he had 56/56 games and the year before 63/70. Seems like he usually miss some games.

Sounds like people very high on Chychrun. I know he is good but i honestly don’t follow him that closely. I think it is a big bet to give up a first in a time where we need to desperately stock the pond, but agree with @um that if we can TRULY prop the window, then maybe it is worth it. Certainly solidifies the left side for the long term assuming both Fever and Orlov resign.

Bad news for Caps fans. The Islanders got the best man for the job after Lou retires.

Robertson is a big bodied winger who uses his size to his advantage but could play a more physical game. His skating is a work in progress. He lacks a separation gear and quick first steps, but is okay once he gets to his top speed. He possesses good hockey IQ with an excellent work ethic.

Robertson is a perfect example of why I just don't care much about aesthetic attributes like skating and physicality.

Give me the players who discernibly impact goal differential.

Not sure why you keep focusing on only skating, it’s the entire physical package with CMM including skating…..and skating as a “work in progress” isn’t the same as CMM being somewhat physically deficient last year.

Robertson has/had an NHL-ready physique and obviously has a nice set of tools.

If CMM performed like this dude last year, he’s already cemented his place this year and the whole physicality/skating thing would be a non-issue. He didn’t, therefor it simply highlights parts of the why.

Where‘s your typical old boys network/nepotism outrage today?

Was just checking out VAN's blueline group. That's some early Caps era shit for Bruce to work with.

What does their D line look like?
Well, Luke Schenn is their #3 at the moment behind Hughes/OEL with Myers out. The rest are comprised of Tucker Poolman and three D that have around 175 NHL games between them (Stillman, Rathbone, Burroughs).
