It’s hard. Same with Lavi who didn’t win a series in 2 years. And I like Lavi. Still think the Caps will be better/go further than the pens this year.

I’m surprised they gave him that much term, especially with his current contract running until the 23-24 season. Coaches don’t have a ton of shelf life anymore

Well now they are committed to him for at least the next -3 years before they really consider any move…(if it were needed).

Might coincide with 87 riding off into the sunset…

Still seems a bit weird to me so many teams are signing young players to 8 year term without much production

That is a smart, smart signing. I wonder about Colorado's goaltending but no doubt they have the best skaters in the league by far.

Who is Colorado’s second line center? Compher? Newhook? Can’t be Rodrigues, right?
From an Athletic article:

In Colorado’s lineup, Rodrigues will almost certainly play a middle-six role and could contend for the second-line center position. He had more points than Alex Newhook (33) and J.T. Compher (33) this past season.

I would suspect Compher. Newhook is only 21. Rodriques at 2C would be like having Eller at 2C.

Maybe their other skaters are so good that it won’t matter but that’s a pretty big leap of faith for them at 2C.

Mix of those guys but in the end it'll be whoever they acquire at the TDL. There are bunch of good soon-to-be UFA's out there, including Larkin, ROR and Horvat.

If he starts strong they should push it earlier IMO. If they wait until summer and he improves noticeably, we lose out on cost savings….
They could also sign him to a 2 year bridge and he’ll still be an RFA. Then do the 8 years. That will keep cost down the next two years (maybe 2.5M to 3.5M). And then an 8 year will need to probably be much higher. I’m not ready to pay him ”much higher” in the next two Cap tight years.

Between this, Evander Kane, and McDavid’s recent comments about Hockey Canada, Edmonton is way up there in terms of unlikeable teams!
