The penguins rangers hate is real right now I love it. That’s going to be a fun series to watch if they meet

Would be nice to play Florida if for no other reason than I feel absolutely nothing towards their team or fans.

Now a ~2/3 chance of facing Florida.

This weekend should be interesting playing Pittsburgh and Boston back to back. There’s a chance on Sunday night that the Caps are just two points behind Pittsburgh with two games in hand and another game vs the Pens still on the docket. If they get 0 points or 1 point that likely closes the door on finishing higher than 8th.

Things could get chippy in the early 00s when Worrell was running around but that's about it. FLA has always been a vacation destination for the Caps.

Yea our schedule is pretty tough, though. After this weekend still have home and home with TOR, @ COL, @ VGK. Then couple against NYI and then NYR to close it out. Maybe the Rangers won’t be playing for anything. At least the Pens don’t have it that easy either. Not sure how long Crosby will be out, but Malkin sure can’t lead those guys - getting into a fight while you’re on a crucial PP in the 3rd isn’t smart hockey - ha!

I think seeing how we fare his weekend will give us a good idea if they’re realistically gonna battle down the stretch for 3rd. The reward for that might likely be CAR, which would be a vicious series. They might have to scratch Eller for his safety.

And as we know Washington never gives up 3 goal leads.
Yea, exactly! ;) I think the 3rd period of that December game ruined Sammy. The prospect of watching him flop around, as their relentless offense swarms, is already stressing me out.

Looking at the east trends, i believe history typically favors team that roll into the playoffs “hot” with a solid .625 winning average since Feb 1.

The Caps, Pens, and Lightning are all the worst with a .580 avg. seriously, those three are 14-10 with an OT loss or two. Canes are only 15-9 (.600) and the Panthers, Bruins, Rangers, and Leafs are HOT, all above .650 with Panthers at .740

Panthers would be best if we all prefer a quick and painless death from an opponent we don’t have much bad blood with.

Feb. 1 is a very strange starting point, like a 35 game sample?

Did you purposefully take it that far back to include the Caps worst part of the year?
Odd.

I'd think the VAST majority of hockey fans think it's the last 10-15 games where you want to get "hot" and anything beyond that doesn't mean much

I mean no, not really intentional. But my overall point is when the Pens and Blues won, they had some of the best records in Jan / Feb / March. I think you need more than 10-15 cuz teams start clinching. Just a very simple observation. If we just go by the last 10 games, the same teams are hot

This season started late so you probably need to adjust to March 1. Then Caps look pretty good. :)

I'm sure at this point not even biggest Capitals fans can say that Matthews is not the best goalscorer in the league. I found it very annoying last year when there were people still in denial about it. Ovechkin had his time and he was great but there is a new king in town. Appreciate.

It’s not easy to admit that your favorite player is getting old, and there are new stars rising and taking the mantle.

Personally, I’m glad to see that Matthews is the new sheriff in town. Someone had to eventually take over Ovi’s place, and I’m glad it’s not someone like Laine, talented but lazy.

Greatness takes dedication and consistency. Laine has neither, Matthews certainly has the dedication. What remains to be seen is how consistent he will be over the next 10-15 years.

What made Ovechkin exceptional is not necessarily his peak performance, but the fact that he’s averaged 50 goals per season over 17 years so far. That’s dedication + consistency.

What Matthews is doing doesn’t take anything away from Ovi. Chasing Gretzky is the last thing he has to accomplish, after which he will have nothing left to prove in the sport.
