For our 2nd Movie Pick, the
FOG go back to 1994 for the Luc Besson classic,
LEON: THE PROFESSIONAL.
The concept is simple. A corrupt cop (Gary Oldman) kills the entire family of a 13 year old girl (Natalie Portman) over drugs and money. A hitman (Jean Reno) in her apartment complex saves her life by taking her in.
She convinces him to train her how to "hit" so she can get revenge. While the plot if simple, it's the sense of style Luc Besson imbues into the film, along with the memorable characters and performances, that make it special. Each scene pops and drives the plot forward. No needless meat on the bone. Truly a great screenplay.
The unsung hero is the films score by Eric Serra. He would later compose the score for Besson's other 90's classic, The Fifth Element. You would know it right away when comparing the two. No other scores sound like it, and they contribute greatly to the style.
To this day, one of my favorite movies of all-time and in my opinion, one of the best of the entire decade. It's incredible how many classic movies came out in 1994.
I have a 1 of 1 painting of the picture below hanging in my basement.
