I was going to do this anyway, even before I landed on that idea of the classic actors category, and I'm relieved that he lasted as long as he did.

I first became aware of him as a caricature on "Looney Tunes." I'd probably already heard his name in passing, and knew he had something to do with gangsters, but that was about it. I thought he had a weird face in the cartoons.

tumblr_mllti0Mcdj1s4rha3o7_250.gifv

I hadn't really sat and watched any of his films until the day I decided to watch "Casablanca." Pretty f***ing life-changing experience, to be honest.

Then I started searching out everything I could find. I can't really avoid pick-tipping just a bit, but this one was taken by Rebel for his classic film. He's spectacularly droll in this, the perfect Chandler antihero.

Then there are all the unforgettable scenes with the love of his life. This is one of my favorites.

He has been my guy for a very long time, so I want him in my team.

Great pick.

He has a LOT of great roles, and some of his best are when he isn't in his typecast gangster deal.

Oh shit, they expect people to watch the All-Star Skills Competition lolz more like "Friday Night Fights," amirite?

ippo-hajime-no-ippo.gif

We start the day with superabandoning league absentee @Hollywood Cannon on the clock with about seven picks to make, @Strawberry Fields on deck with a normal and pleasant single pick to make, @BernieParent on the lido deck with a normal and pleasant single pick to make, and Rebel's drunk ass after that.

Speaking of whom, I agree with what he and Quief Invictus are saying about my guy to a point - that point being that he is very good in those atypical roles - but I think that line of thinking can be a trap at times. I don't agree that he is "even better" in those parts. I think his best work by far is right in his wheelhouse, playing gangsters and detectives and the like - he is perfectly suited to those characters because he brings all of the gruffness and circumstantial gravitas they need, but he is also able to imbue them with sympathy and pathos, qualities which are essential to those people. He's not unique in that regard, but he is probably the very best there has ever been at it. He also speaks volumes with his eyes (not to mention his jowls).

I tried not to pick-tip too many films there, and what ended up happening was that I really checked off the most obvious of his films. But one of my very favorite of his performances was in "Dark Passage."

You mistake me, Cucktain Dook Pooplin. I fully agree his best work is in his wheelhouse; but I greatly enjoy the roles outside of that because it's where he shows his skill and versatility. That's where he shows he's an all-timer and not a Keanu. Keanu is great in his very specific limited way, and very bad the second he leaves that bubble. The Old Humper proves himself with the range. He was far more than the "hard man" character; he was simply the best at that, while also being able to be anything else if desired.

Who else embodies a genre quite like him?

Two, thank you very much.

The Las Vegas Desert Ducks are proud to select, once again a hometown act, The Killers as our Team Band II. We already had Brandon Flowers on the squad so might as well add the rest of the band to go along with our original Team Musician of @Sombastate (aka Gregory Michael Davis.... hit up his venmo Gregory Michael Davis)

ab6761610000e5eb207b21f3ed0ee96adce3166a

Next we will turn our attention to the Team Music Video II category where think this is available but don't hate us if it's not... Tonight, Tonight by the Smashing Pumpkins. The song slaps and the music video ain't too bad either with those weirdos.

Although, I will say that I haven't been able to listen to this song without thinking of this still almost 13 years later.

Yes, I know hockey is stupid but this is back from when hockey wasn't so stupid.

"Among the many, many amazing options for Team Standalone Film I still available, the owners of the Tampa Bay FireSticks are mucho stoked to pick this rare Canadian gem and one of our flicks on heavy rotation, a Porky's above the 49th parallel, as it were: Snow Ballin'.

s-l300.jpg

"This raunchy comedy romp follows the tried-and-oh-so-true story of a young, virile ski instructor who gives private lessons to a group of beautiful snow bunnies. What ensues is a hornucopia of ..."

"RYAN REYNOLDS?! WHAT IS GOING ON IN HERE?? "

"Oh, hi guys. I just thought I would stop by and make the FireSticks' next selection. You don't mind, do you?"

"No no no NONONONONO, we cannot have this! I'm sorry Mr. Reynolds but we must overturn your request!"

"Whaaaat? But this is a classic!"

"It is ENTIRELY inappropriate and against this franchise's very essence. We cannot allow it! We hope that you understand."

"Fine, but this will come up in our next executive meeting. Page 1 of the agenda!!!" [Door slams behind Ryan Reynolds]

"My blood pressure [RUBS TEMPLES] ... okay, thankfully we have a much more deserving selection for Team Standalone Film I. While Stephen King novels rarely translated well onto the big screen, significantly more movie success was achieved through adaptations of his short stories. We are more than pleased to have the opportunity to pick our consideration of the crème de la crème: The Shawshank Redemption.

"Expertly directed and adapted by Frank Darabont from the short story Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, this film was nominated for 7 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor in a Leading Role (Morgan Freeman). It is criminal that it did not win a single Oscar. The Shawshank Redemption is IMDB's top-rated movie of all time, speaking to the compelling story and amazing performances of Mr. Freeman. Tim Robbins, and the entire cast.

"I guess it comes down to a simple choice, @Rebels57. Get busy picking or get busy dying."

I already took Corgan for my Superband II, so I didn't actually plan on taking it. But it's a great pick, as we discussed off the record, on the QT, and very hush-hush.

Keanu is great in his very specific limited way, and very bad the second he leaves that bubble.

I humbly request that Bernie gets a Shawshank/Snow Ballin’ double feature for his team movie.

You know what's funny? I just looked, and I can't find the All-Star Game anywhere on the TV schedule

laughing-pointing.gif

We start the day with @Rebels57's drunk ass on the clock, then @Asnito on deck with a pair of picks like a pair of testicles to pick, then back to Drunky in the lido drunk tank, then @BernieParent waiting soulfully forever on the lido deck, and finally to Starberry Fields forever on the lido afterdeck.

I watched another kaiju movie last night, literally - "What to Do With the Dead Kaiju?" (2022). I very nearly turned it off after the first five minutes, because it was starting to look like a waste of time, but I waited and found that I wasn't bored or miserable, so I left it on. It was surprisingly hilarious. I won't say that it is "good," because I don't think that is at all true, but it really was funny. I looked up the director, Satoshi Mike, and realized that he made a GREAT film that I watched several years ago while I was in Bangkok, "Adrift in Tokyo" (2007). That one is about a criminal who pays a slacker to walk around Tokyo with him before he turns himself in to the authorities. Almost nothing happens, as you'd expect from that title and that description, but it is SO f***ing charming. Joe Odigiri plays the slacker, and he is at his quirky best.

So I was looking through Mike's other films, and I found one called "Turtles Are Surprisingly Fast Swimmers" (2005). It looks awesome, but I can't find the f***er anywhere. That's my mission for today, to find it so I can watch it tonight. Fingers crossed.

For Team Actor II, this man immediately sprang to mind. One of the most diverse actors of a generation, capable of nailing both comedic and dramatic roles. His award cabinet was full with every accolade imaginable at the time of his untimely death. He was also a brilliant stage actor with 3 Tony Award nominations. One of them was for Death of a Salesman (along with Andrew Garfield) which I was fortunate enough to see in person in the first row.

PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN, welcome to the FOG.

I have been doing a bit of back-reading here again and my nostalgia bone just forces me to say: amazing pick by @Magua with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion several weeks ago. Magic. I remember reading every single article, every single preview on it before it came out. Magic

I think it was these 2 particular screenshots back in 2004 where I just couldnt contain my expectations
It may sound weird today, but this was 2 decades ago, the beauty blew my mind
