I have always believed that the RHF should have withdrawn from the tournament in the first place, but I will never understand in a thousand years why they agreed to either suspending the KHL season, or playing regular season games without star attractions, just to "cooperate" with the NHL on this tournament. It makes no sense at all. And then to have the NHL dictating who will and who will not be accepted to play. Please save face and drop out now!! (not that there are that many stars playing, since Radulov and others were not included).

I really dont even understand why Russia is even playing in this. The money goes towards the NHL while they are likely passing on the Olympics. All you are doing is making another league richer.

I want to make sure the historical record is correct. This is for the sake of posterity.

If Voynov is banned, it was an NHL decision, not a decision made by Canada. As Putin said after the 2016 World Hockey Championship, "sport is sport and hockey is hockey".

So Russian fans understand clearly. Canada is not making this decision, the NHL is. Trudeau would probably allow Voynov to come for the sake of best-on-best hockey. Canada respects Russia and our shared history through hockey. We all remember 1972.

To make sure the historical record is clear, the NHL is making the decision to ban Voynov. Not Canada. We want Russia to bring their very best players for international hockey competition.

Russia is Canadas greatest hockey rival and foe. Our history and culture will always be linked through hockey. I want no excuses, let Voynov play. Give him a limited visa, ensure his whereabouts is known at all times, but let him play. We share a common respect as WWII allies and our Summit Series in 1972. We are forever linked as hockey superpowers.

I hope Trudeau steps in. "Sport is sport and hockey is hockey". Hockey must be bigger than politics. Let Voynov play!! I don't want any excuses from the Russians when Canada wins and we didn't even have McDavid on our team.

Political opportunity for Trudeau to show compassion as an "honest broker". Let Voynov play, give him a limited visa and ensure he has Canadian security around him at all times. Russia will respect that move and so will the NHL and Americans.

"Sport is sport and hockey is hockey".

They Forgave Heatley in 2004. Why Won't They Forgive Voynov?:)

Canada wants best-on-best with Russia. This is the NHL doing this, not Canada.

Your athletes and fans will be treated great in Toronto. Canadian hockey fans will take Russian fans out for drinks and celebrate our game together.

I hope Russian people know that this is not Canada banning Voynov, it is the NHL.

Most people understand.

I hope they figure it out. Even if Voynov had to be supervised at all times by Canadian authorities, I'm sure Russia, the NHL, and the USA would be okay with that.

I don't blame Russia if they pull out. I want Russia to come to Toronto though, it wouldn't be a World Cup without Russia.

I want Russia to stay because we cannot have international hockey without Canada and Russia. Canadian people will treat Russians very well who come over to Toronto. Our team and Head Coach stood with the Russian people during Victory Day in St. Petersburg this year. Our coach wore the commemorative Ribbon of St. George in support of our WWII ally.

"Sport is sport, hockey is hockey" - Vladimir Putin. I agree, leave politics out of it. Let us play hockey best-on-best. I don't want any excuses when Canada wins Gold. Russia must be here.

Most people don't consider it a World Cup even now with "those" two teams.

Realistically, the only team truly affected is the USA. Canada loses McDavid, that's it. The USA loses 4-7 players from their team. If anything, the USA suffers the greatest disadvantage.

So if it is Suomi, Tre Kronor, Russia, or Canada in the finals playing each other, then it's best-on-best. No excuses.

The quality of hockey is going to be incredible.

Would love to see a best on best. But unfortunately this tournament is not that with our without Voynov, with or without Team Russia. What the NHL is giving us is a galaxy away from best on best. I hope Russia does pull out and this preseason exhibition becomes even more of a **** show than it already is.

If the Russian Ice Hockey Federation decided to withdraw, Russian NHL players can still form their own team, they just can't compete as Team Russia. Team Ovechkin. Although if the Russian Ice Hockey Federation told them to not participate in the tournament, they would all drop out.

For posterity, I agree. We can't call it best-on-best because of the Young Guns. Best-on-best means full access to every player.

It's as close as we'll get though outside of the Olympics.

and we are not even going to get that because a few marketing gurus at NHLHQ in NY City made a splash of $$$$ on Winter Classics and now believe they **** golden bricks. So, support this preseason exhibition gimmicky nonsense and you'll get more of the same from Bettman and his crew.

I won't waste a second of my September on this gimmicky nonsense.

Nope. With high end talent and coaching(=defensive systems), it's gonna be trapping and dump & chase. We sure as hell aim to bore everyone to death. Or, like Janice in accounting, not give a **** and just mail it in.

Must resist temptation to respond...must resist :help:

...Hockey must be bigger than politics

Don't kid yourself....historically, politics and sport/spectacle go together like...bread and circuses

I sure as hell hope he would not and severly doubt that he would.

No way should we be changing laws/policies to let in a POS like Voynov in the country for hockey. That would be a PR nightmare for the LIberals to let criminals in the country for the sake of a hockey tournament.

I am not sure what the big problem is here. Voynov is suspended by the NHL and a criminal. He shouldn't be in this tournament at all and his suspension and exclusion from the tournament makes sense and is the right thing.

I guess Russia backing out now makes sense for them and saves them the embarrassment of getting whipped on the ice again.

The situation is pretty easy. Voynov was deported from the US and suspended indefinitely by the NHL. The World Cup is in Canada, but the tournament is organised by the NHL. Anyone who's being "surprised" or is saying that the NHL has no right to do that, has no clue what he's talking about. Simple as that.

There could be worse reasons than that for dropping out. All of the other teams realize that there is no chance that they could win, so they're just going through the motions for whatever reason. I assume that the United States will have home games for everyone other than Canada, so they probably have the best chance of being the other team to advance to the final round. But even then, they no doubt savor the prospect of getting their butts whipped in full view of their countrymen. This tournament shapes up to be a "celebrate Canada" massacre. I can't wait!

IMO the NHL should do what is right, and let the Canadian government decide what to do with Voynov. These are not NHL games that are being played, but rather international hockey games.

Yes these are nhl games. No one in the world knows of this American companies product.

It has no international audience or significance.

Let's repeat it once more.

This is a cash grab exhibition to take money from North Americans for meaningless games.

It's a crime in reality

A crime? Give it a rest and save some breath for real crimes. You don't like it, don't watch.

A crime? Meaningless game?

LOL

These games have a lot more meaning than the WHC do. This tournament is a lot more interesting, a lot more important and a hell of a lot better than that pathetic tournament.

Who cares if there is no international audience anyways they don't matter.

Indeed what could be more important than seeing Connor McDavid play against his own country? What fan hasn't dreamt of such a sight?:laugh: Thank goodness it's finally going to happen!

The canadian government is completely out of the picture. Voynov is free to be in any other country than the US, I suppose, including Canada. You are right that it's a tournament with international elements and parameters, but it's the NHL who organizes it. It's their event, the same way as are the Winter Classic or the All-Star game. There is no question they have full right over this. It's their decision and should be respected.
