Hey look another Russian

Belarussian. Important distinction as there may not be the same draw to play in the KHL.

Don't know a lot about him—which seems like the case for most of the scouting reports about him. Sounds like he has a NHL toolset but that he just wasn't scouted that much so he didn't get a lot of projections. I guess Belarussian junior leagues weren't a priority for travel during the pandemic.

Seems like they are swinging for a homerun. Smaller nation, high scoring player. Good U 18. I know nothing about him but like the idea of going for an unknown.

Wanted our only pick in the first 4 rounds to be C or D. Splicing hairs at this point in determining BPA so needed to prioritize the more important positions imo.

Geez, this seems like Benning getting a chub for a player after seeing him in one tournament all over again.
I hope that wasn’t just a flash in the pan.

Does he go straight to Abbotsford?

That's an interesting question. The Athletic profile on him mentions that he was drafted by a QMJHL team. Does that mean he has an obligation to player major junior ahead of the AHL?

83. Danila Klimovich — C/W, Minsky Zubry/Dinamo Molodechno, 6-foot-2 (Wheeler's take)

Klimovich, the second Belarussian to appear on my board, is one of those players where when his shot misses the net and bangs off of the board, it sounds like it should have put a hole through the wall. It just explodes off of his stick. Add in a pro frame and a tenacious, “go-get-the-puck” disposition and there’s enough there to warrant getting him into a program (and a better league) to work with him to round out the rest. He, like Kuzmin, was also selected in the CHL Import Draft, by Rouyn-Noranda, so he has an option if he wants to come over to North America — or the NHL club that takes him does.

54. Danila Klimovich, RW, Minsk Zubry-Belarus (Pronman's take)
Jan. 9, 2003 | 6-foot-2 | 202 pounds
Skating: Below–average
Puck Skills: Average
Hockey Sense: Below-average
Compete: Average
Shot: Above-average

Klimovich is an extremely tough evaluation case. He played in the Belarus junior league all season then lit it up versus good nations at the U18 world championship with six goals in five games. He’s a 6-foot-2 winger with great hands who can make plays through defenders often, using his reach and skill. He is a mid-range threat with his wrist shot and one-timer. Klimovich is an average skater and passer, which can limit him in how dangerous he is off the rush if he can’t beat his checks with his hands. He’s also not that good off the puck. In a sentence, Klimovich projects as a bottom-six NHL winger who can chip in scoring, but is also one of the bigger mysteries of the draft.

Belarus also had some political unrest that started last August and would have likely scared most foreign nationals from visiting the country. So any viewing of Klimovich, or anyone in the country, would be limited.

I don’t know who wrote that bottom report but he definitely can project as someone who could play up the lineup if developed right. His skating is also not as bad as indicated.
