Why does McDavid need to win the scoring race by a massive 10-15pt margin to be considered for the Hart according to some people? If Gaudreau or Matthews won the Art Ross by a single point it would almost be a sure thing that they receive the Hart. He’s the best player in the league (MVP) and easily the most valuable player to his respective team (MVP). It’s like people will do anything to justify giving it to somebody else because McDavid has already won it twice.
You're not wrong, but remember the Hart trophy is historically a media-driven award, which always (or, 95% of the time) takes into account team success / improvement. Then, when you are an established elite player who's won some real hardware already---which
McDavid is at this stage---you start competing with yourself.
I don't know if you were around in 1990-91 (I was), but look at Wayne Gretzky that season. Wayne was 4th in ES goals, 1st in assists (back to mid-80s' Edmonton levels), 1st in points by 32 (!), had one of the best plus/minuses of NHL forwards, led his team in scoring by 72 points, and his team finished in 1st place for the first time in franchise history. Slam dunk for the Hart? Nope, he didn't win it, because he was competing with himself.
So, McDavid is kind of like that now (not saying he's achieved what Gretzky had, but you get my point). Last year, he had 100% of the vote. So, unless he can match what he did last year, and his team push noticeably higher up in the standings, it becomes very hard for him to win the Hart.
Shesterkin is smokin' this season, and on a team with not too much offense. He's also got the mighty New York media machine behind him. Definitely has a shot, but it's damn hard for goalies to win the Hart.
Huberdeau is great this season, and easily leads his team. That said, that team has six 20-goal scorers and is 1st in offense, so Huberdeau is one of a few guys filling the net there. But he has a shot.
I do think Johnny
Gaudreau might have the best argument right now. The dude is dominating ES scoring across the entire NHL, which is pretty amazing. He's actually having a historically-great ES season. And The Flames are in 1st, and having their best season in many years, which helps the narrative.
EDIT: I should also mention
Matthews, who certainly has a good chance.
