Gaudreau has been on the ice for 29 ES goals against. THIS ENTIRE SEASON.

Nobody else in this race is even close.
He has been on the Ice for 41 GA at ES.
In fact, there is no GGY forward with more On-Ice GA...

He's been a +51, which is very impressive. But then again, Lindholm is +48 so I don't know if it's a huge argument for MVP.

nhl.com shows it being 41. But he's been on for 92 ES GF so his net is a ridiculous +51.
Correct, Gaudreau is +51

Other players in the Hart conversation:
McDavid +18
Draisaitl +21
Matthews +15
Huberdeau +22
Josi +23

Calgary's top line is a crazy +143, Lindholm(+48) and Tkachuk(+44) are #2 and #3 in the league

im thinking josi or igor.

huberdeau, gaudreau. matthews, mcdavid all deserving but none running away with it

think that shifts voter eyes towards a non traditional winner*

*im pretty sure they gave it to matthews in like december in toronto so this discussion may be moot

Why does McDavid need to win the scoring race by a massive 10-15pt margin to be considered for the Hart according to some people? If Gaudreau or Matthews won the Art Ross by a single point it would almost be a sure thing that they receive the Hart. He’s the best player in the league (MVP) and easily the most valuable player to his respective team (MVP). It’s like people will do anything to justify giving it to somebody else because McDavid has already won it twice.
You're not wrong, but remember the Hart trophy is historically a media-driven award, which always (or, 95% of the time) takes into account team success / improvement. Then, when you are an established elite player who's won some real hardware already---which McDavid is at this stage---you start competing with yourself.

I don't know if you were around in 1990-91 (I was), but look at Wayne Gretzky that season. Wayne was 4th in ES goals, 1st in assists (back to mid-80s' Edmonton levels), 1st in points by 32 (!), had one of the best plus/minuses of NHL forwards, led his team in scoring by 72 points, and his team finished in 1st place for the first time in franchise history. Slam dunk for the Hart? Nope, he didn't win it, because he was competing with himself.

So, McDavid is kind of like that now (not saying he's achieved what Gretzky had, but you get my point). Last year, he had 100% of the vote. So, unless he can match what he did last year, and his team push noticeably higher up in the standings, it becomes very hard for him to win the Hart.

Shesterkin is smokin' this season, and on a team with not too much offense. He's also got the mighty New York media machine behind him. Definitely has a shot, but it's damn hard for goalies to win the Hart.

Huberdeau is great this season, and easily leads his team. That said, that team has six 20-goal scorers and is 1st in offense, so Huberdeau is one of a few guys filling the net there. But he has a shot.

I do think Johnny Gaudreau might have the best argument right now. The dude is dominating ES scoring across the entire NHL, which is pretty amazing. He's actually having a historically-great ES season. And The Flames are in 1st, and having their best season in many years, which helps the narrative.

EDIT: I should also mention Matthews, who certainly has a good chance.

Don't know how Gaudreau isn't the favorite at this time.

He's been the best player on the best line in hockey. Just look at this 5v5 GD: 78GF 29GA!!

He's also:
  • 1st in +/-
  • 1st in ES points (by a mile)
  • 1st in 5v5 points (by a mile)
  • 3rd in scoring
  • 2nd in primary scoring
  • 1st in primary assists
  • 1st in 5v5 GF%

He's on pace for the best ES scoring season in nearly 30 years. You could take away all of his secondary assists and he'd still be leading in 5v5 points. His 53 primary 5v5 points is a remarkable 10 points ahead of 2nd place.

I honestly don’t know how a compelling objective case can be made for anyone else if the vote was held today.

The difference in points between Johnny and McDavid is secondary assists on the power play. Same with Huberdeau. Johnny destroys them both in every 5v5 metric.

Shesty and Josi have a case, but they each have their own awards.

I don’t think Johnny would win, even if the vote were held today, because small market and all that combined with a lack of understanding how truly dominant he is when you look at the raw numbers.

The Norris and Vezina are essentially next tier Hart trophies this season. We’re seeing the sickest hockey out of dudes in 2 years. While bumpy, (understatement), a legit 82 game season and standard playoff format is bringing out the best.

The funniest discussion all year is "Who's gonna win the Hart!"

And then it just ends up being McDavid or some other top point getter.

Look at markstroms and saros numbers and and than look at mcdavids back stoppers. 925 save percentage compared to two goalies below 900.
