Last night, McDavid scored his 3rd consecutive game winning goal and now has 6 game winning goals in the past 14 games leading the Oilers to 11-2-1 record.

With 12 goals and 15 assists for 27 points in those 14 games, he now stands with 41 goals and is looking to claim his 4th Art Ross. He should get 120 points (maybe 125?) and might even score 50 goals while doing it.

The Oilers have been winning ever since they returned from a span where they had 10 out of their 16 games canceled due to COVID from mid-late December through mid-late January. Since losing to Florida and seeing their record drop to 18-16-2, they’ve ripped off a 23-9-2 record.

With 11 games to go, they sit in 5th place in the Western Conference and should clear 100 points.

McDavid is unofficially the Hart winner every year. He has officially taken the driver’s seat in this year’s race for me.

McDavid is playing unreal right now and scoring big goals in big moments. He’s clearly the best player in the world by a decently wide margin.

McDavid
Josi
Matthews

Matthews is on the ice for a lot of 5 v 5 goals against, his so called defensive play is vastly overrated. Fantastic player and on my top 3 forwards list and would be #3 on the Hart ballot if I had a vote.

This will be McDavids when it’s all said and done. Just on a torrid pace when the Oilers have needed him to step up the most.

I've taken heat on HF, but my finalists would be: Matthews, Josi, Huberdeau.

I'm not sure why people are discounting Huberdeau so much. Yes, Barkov is a great player and maybe "better," but this is about 2022. Huberdeau is 2nd in points, 1st in assists, and has a massive lead on Barkov in points.

The voters are going to have a hell of a time because McDavid, Gaudreau, Shesterkin, etc. all have valid arguments as well.

Draisaitl, Matthews, Shesterkin, Gadreau, Makar, Josi.

McDavid aint in the running unless he gets 10+ points ahead of Draisaitl - who beats him out with his more goals and PK role.
Its hard to believe anyone's been better then Leon this season... then he goes to the bench and McGoat jumps on the ice.

Vegito shows up whenever the flavour of the day comes close to McDavid.

Admire your conviction. Solid top notch.

Of course I am an Oilers fan and think McDavid should win it although I never felt that way about 1 month or so ago. When the Oilers were struggling he was the guy that picked up his play and the team turned it around. He has been scoring key goals to win games and is playing amazing right now when the team has needed it the most. Most valuable player to his team? I think so. Lots of great players have played great this season and it's not over, still time to change minds.

The next few weeks will decide the winner. Right now it's probably Mcdavid with Huberdeau and Matthews as the finalists with Mcdavid winning after the last few games his game winning dominance.

If Shes gets some shutouts in the next few games he could win.

If Matthews gets 65 goals he will win.

If Mcdavid or Hubs gets 130 points they will win.

The next few weeks will decide.

Right now I think it’s:
McDavid
Matthews
Josi

I’d put money on McDavid at this point as traditionally the Art Ross winner takes home the Hart unless the second place guy is really close in points. I also think he’s probably the very definition of MVP which helps. There’s no player more valuable to his team than McDavid.

Shesty would have to have a big turnaround to win the Hart at this point, he didn't have a great March month.

I think Matthews is the favorite for the Hart right now, but McDavid, Gauds, Josi and Hubs are certainly in the discussion as well.

So is Huberdeau's Hart argument that he has almost as many points as McDavid?

If any other player was leading the league in scoring and dragging a weak team to the playoffs they would be a lock for the Hart. This level of play has just become a norm for McDavid, people aren't wowed by it anymore.

I think right now it's 50-50 between McDavid and Matthews. Shesterkin has fallen off a bit. Josi is still having an amazing season, but I don't see a D-men getting enough of the recognition to realistically challenge the forwards.

If Matthews completes the season matching his pace (64 goals + 48 assists in 77 games) he will win it.

That's insanity.

I think a pretty simple metric, and probably the one most people should consider instead of using 'narratives' is to look at how many points are removed from a team when they lose a player, or what % of their teams offence have they been a part of. Hart is in 99% of cases given to this player.

Let's do some quick %'s.

Florida - 294 goals, Huberdeau 102 points. 34.7%
Calgary - 241 goals, Gaudreau 95 points, 39.4%
Toronto - 270 goals, Matthews 95 points, 35.1%
Edmonton - 251 goals, McDavid 106 points, 42.2%
Edmonton - 251 goals, Draisaitl 101 points, 40.2%

The pair from Edmonton BOTH provide the two highest 'in on' points % relative to their teams goals compared to anyone else in the league. These two players, while playing on the same team, ON DIFFERENT LINES 5ON5, are #1 and #2 in the world for 'importance' in terms of providing goals to their team.

Simply put, nobody else in the league is more important to putting up goals in the entire league than McDavid, and it's not that close. Draisaitl and Gaudreau is a bit behind, and the others are waaaay behind.

Remove Huberdeau from Florida entirely and they're still going to be a stanley cup contender.

Remove McDavid from Edmonton and they aren't coming close to making the playoffs.

At this point for forwards, it has to be between McDavid and Gaudreau with McDavid holding a significant edge. He also has the 'it' factor that leads every teams top players shadowing him and seeing it as the biggest challenge possible to shut him down. Gaudreau doesn't have this level of competition.

As for defence and goalies, it is a lot harder to gauge their value. The only way a defenceman is winning the Hart is if they're leading that group in scoring. Right now that's Josi by a healthy margin.

Let's say for forwards we can choose two of McDavid, Draisaitl, and Gaudreau. Draisaitl plays on Edmonton but even though he has contributed to a higher % of offence, let's remove him. Then take Josi.

McDavid
Gaudreau
Josi

As your finalists. The goalie SV% race is too close to have one of them involved this year. Two months ago Shesterkin was way ahead and could've secured a spot in the top 3 voting. He's fallen back down to earth. I think a goalie has to be head and shoulders above his peers in net to be considered for this, which he currently isn't.

So who's the most valuable player in the world?

Well, it's McDavid. Gaudreau is having a great year especially 5 on 5, but there's no way someone who is 11 points back ends up winning it over McDavid, unless he closes the gap in the final games. As it stands now, there's no chance.

Josi is compelling. He's a lock for the Norris now, and like McDavid, his team doesn't make the playoffs without him. Hell, they might still miss WITH him. I wonder if their team is good enough for him to be considered. We had this argument at times in McDavid's career that you can't give MVP to someone whose team isn't even good. Well...I don't know.

McDavid is the obvious choice, but that becomes boring for people who don't want to see the same guy win every year. I think it would be downright evil to vote against someone just because he's already won it a few times. This isn't some participation award league. Give it to the literal MOST VALUABLE PLAYER -- the guy who leads the league in points while being keyed in on harder than anyone else.

If advanced stats guys want to chime in, go ahead. I already know McDavid has Selke level GA/60 while playing in front of two goalies with sub 900 SV% this year -- the worst goaltending tandem in the entire league.

It’s a solid method, but JT Miller’s been close, being in on 42.1% of the Canucks goals ;)

I'm not saying McDavid shouldn't win it, but his sv% while he's on the ice is well above 900 and Matthews is below 870, which is a complete statistical anomaly really that has nothing to do with either of their levels of defensive play. Beyond the fact that I watch both players all the time and Matthews is easily a better defensive player, literally every single stat that measures individual defensive play shows Matthews to be better this season and every other season, and when Matthews had a normal on ice sv% his goals against numbers have always been better as well. Just worth point out so we don't get it twisted believing McDavid is a better defensive player than the guy who is closest to him in Hart contention, not saying McDavid shouldn't win it.

Matthews, when on the ice 5on5, allows an entire goal extra per 60 mins of ice time. That is significant, and brutal. Which defensive metrics were you referring to?

Campbell with a .913 on the year as primary goalie, Koskinen with .902 as primary goalie.

Do we chalk up Matthews at below .870 SV while he's on the ice as him and Marner on a line all year simply being unlucky? What is Campbell's SV% when they're off the ice? .930? Lol. Can we consider that maybe their positioning or something related to how THEY play the game doesn't lend well to their goalie being put in favourable positions to make saves? As in, do they allow dangerous opportunities at a larger rate?

Admittedly advanced stats aren't my speciality, so I'm interested to hear what you have to say.

Matthews giving up an entire extra goal /60 than McDavid is significant. That's brutal.

Matthews will have to keep close (within 10 points) of the point leaders to have a shot at winning the Hart, if not it'll likely go Huberdeau/McDavid with Matthews as third, Josi is a wildcard if he stays hot

Matthews every other defensive stat is elite. To add he had a solid goals against the last 2 years. So him having a bad goals against this year is the outlier and still the only stat that's says he's not great on defense.
Matthews is definitely great on defense. Anybody making an argument otherwise is cherry picking stats. If you look at all the numbers and the eye test he comes out as great.

Huberdeau should not be above McDavid. The latter can actually play defense. Huberdeau is atrocious. Matthews and McDavid are my front runners.

McDavid/Matthews

Huberdeau

No that's my point, Matthews has better advanced stats than McDavid and always has. He takes the puck away far more, gives it away less, blocks as many shots as McDavid and Draisaitl combined and has a higher faceoff%.

Every previous season that Matthews had a normal on ice sv% (the past two seasons it was .922 and .919) he had better goals against numbers than McDavid.

I'm not really trying to pump up my guy here either, these are just basic facts that Matthews has a wildly unsustainable and unlucky on ice sv% this season, his line dominates play on the ice like very few lines I've ever seen but one of our goalies seems to let in a really easy shot pretty regularly. Also the month of November was the only time the Leafs had a sv% above .900, Campbell had something like like around .950.

McDavid is a great two-way player just to be clear and he's better than Matthews offensively in general, this season however there is a great case for Matthews being that close in points per game while scoring goals at the rate he has been and dominating in scoring chances for and against while he's on the ice.
