People looked at me funny when I said Josi a month ago. Now he’s on an even more torrid pace. He’s gotta be the guy. By far the most valuable player to his team. Toronto without Matthew has problems, but Nashville without Josi is a bottom tier team.

I love Gaudreau, but he's playing on the same team as Tkachuk and on the same line as Lindholm. If we're crossing off McDavid and Drai because they play together, then Gaudreau just simply doesn't have a case.

Why do you think Tkachuk and Lindholm are having the seasons that they are?

They played together without Gaudreau for the first 40 games of 2021 and had a combined 31 5v5 points. Since getting Gaudreau on their line they have 109 5v5 points in 82 games.

I don’t think it is proper to hand out awards to players based on ”what have you done lately”. Almost all players have some down weeks or month in the season, for a number of reasons. But those with a high note in mars, april have bigger chance winning than the ones on highs in nov-december, when foundation for a good season teamwise is settled. Some players excelling in final month might do that in a team already in playoffs while early shiners are the major reason why their teams had a good start to build on.

I mean Drai has an outside shot but let's be honest he also has played 6 more games and has 300 more minutes on the ice this season.

If Matthews is truly the best, he won’t need excuses made for him and what if fantasy scenarios.

Missing time to injuries is one thing, but if the difference comes down to a goal, he’ll have himself to blame for the suspension.

The good thing for Matthews is that the two games off didn’t derail his momentum.

Even though I would prefer to see Drai take it, I also honestly hope Matthews does get 60 and defends his Rocket. It would make future discussions more interesting and the hype around his goal scoring more palatable.

What is this ice time thing. I read time after time. Matthews plays enough to get most beneficial minutes for him to make points. Draisaitl getting more minutes means most of time some tough minutes and he plays more than coaches really want to use some player. Those extra minutes most likely decreases his points/minutes even if he plays in same level, he would with lower amount of minutes and same time it's sometimes too much for him and lowers his quality of play. That's just stupid argument time after time to tell your golden boy is better.

One thing that baffles me on HF is this almost unanimous acceptance that powerplay points are worth less than 5v5 points.

A good powerplay is vital come playoff time, and the idea that less penalties are called in the playoffs is statistically a myth.

A point is a point.

It's just another lazy attempt by some to try and discredit other players while pumping up their own.

For Matthews, his career has been a bunch of what if's, should've, would've, could've and it's what they have to resort to year after year when his own play can't measure up.

And how does anything in your post have anything to do with who gets the rocket?

Lots of context missing, such as Draisaitl's 67 minutes of PK time vs. Matthews' 4 minutes . They're both phenomenal players, and in reality, who's a better player probably just comes down to preference for a style of player or outright team bias.

McDavid 2022 wouldn't be the favourite against McDavid 2021. Luckily for him, he's not in the race. From the participants this year McDavid is the best

Draisaitl, Matthews, Shesterkin, Gadreau, Makar, Josi.

McDavid aint in the running unless he gets 10+ points ahead of Draisaitl - who beats him out with his more goals and PK role.

The Matthews Selke narrative was another one born by the Toronto hype-machine. I watch enough of him to see him blow enough assignments to just be considered average defensively. Don't care what his expected goals against xcf%% might be.

He just blew his back-check and let Blake Wheeler put Mark Giordano into retirement.

He should, but I doubt the voters give him much given where he is in the points race and who is above him.
Keep in mind he still has 15 games left to play. More than everyone above him in points. He won't finish as far back as he looks now. Won't catch them, but he will be over 100pts most likely. Very likely over 50+50.

Doesn't play with the supporting cast of the others either.

I think given his play and supporting cast, he’s been roughly as valuable as anyone, and a strong finish with the extra games could certainly change things, but it’s one of those things where, for instance, I’d argue he’s been better than Huberdeau this year, but you know voters will likely be swayed by a few extra points, the LW assist record and the Panthers finishing top 3 in the standings. I’d say as it stands, McDavid, Matthews, Gaudreau and Huberdeau are more likely to finish ahead unless Kaprizov outscores them, and Josi and Shesterkin are probably ahead unless they fall off as well.

He will most likely finish back even more. Doubtful he outscores the top dogs down the stretch even if he has a game or two in hand. Edmonton is in zero position to be resting McDavid and Drai atm

Zero chance he wins the Hart with the forwards above him in points

Oh, I don't expect him to win. He just has to be moving up the list and should be getting serious consideration.

McDavid wins if the Oilers make it to the playoffs. If not, it's Matthews.

In reality, I think Matthews should win anyway.
