I really don't think voters (or very many of them anyways) care about P/60 or how much ice time guys are getting. They're looking at the actual, tangible results. There is definitely a case for Gaudreau, I just don't think what you put is the way the normal voter is looking at it.
Tangible like +65?

P/60 and minutes played are the stats of morons. They don't predict anything and can't even be used for any past comparisons because they show zero correlation to a players offensive performance from one year to the next. They are almost completely worthless, especially when used to compare guys who play top line minutes.

Whoever wins the Hart should send Jesse Puljujarvi a gift, he likely lost McDavid at least an extra 10 point spread in the scoring race. He almost lost McDavid the Art Ross as well but got sick for a few games just in time and McDavid turned it up. Love old stone hands Puljujarvi though.

I believe we all tried to tell you guys that Puljuvarvi sucked? Maybe next time, you'll listen.

That's mostly to do with the scoring exploding this year.

Josi is sitting 12th in points. It's not even close to as impressive as Karlsson finishing 4th in points while leading the league in assists.
not taking away from your point about how good Karlson was that year, but you are comparing stats from two different seasons. What players did and their point standing last year or 10 years ago means little in hart voting this year. Hart is awarded to the player most valuable to his team each season. Each year will have players at different spots in the standings, this is why it could be a dman with 97 points while the league has a 120 point guy. Or it could be a goalie with a .930 save percentage. Tough to compare past winners and the point standings year to year in the heart. the preds are nowhere without Josi, Duchene, Forsberg or Saros. But clearly Josi means the most to that team, and arguably is a very good heart candidate as he is having a pred / NHL record year. Been 30 years since there has been this level of dman points and his March output has him in the books with the likes of Coffey & Orr. Makar may get there some year, but not this year.

This does definitely feel like a year where there are several players who have a legitimate case to win the Hart. I personally wouldn’t consider it unfair any of McDavid, Matthews, Josi, Shesterkin, Gaudreau or Huberdeau won.

If I were to bet money though, I would probably guess Matthews because 60 goals is a once-in-a-decade milestone and because voters are probably getting fatigued by giving McDavid the award so regularly (he has consistently been the best player in the league for years now).

Tough to compare the Karlsson and Josi seasons. I will say that finishing 4th in league scoring as a defensemen is more impressive than what Josi is doing this year BUT, Ottawa missed the playoffs that season, and Josi was a big part of Nashville getting in this season. I don't personally see Josi winning the award, just due to how many players are having special seasons, but he's deserving of all the accolades people are tossing his way, just a great season.

Unfortunately this thread is devolving as any thread that doesn't immediately award everything to one of the two Ms does.

Josi or Kaprizov for me. I'm going a little more with the traditional Hart, which is MVP for their team. They both are top players this year, they stand head and shoulders above their teammates this year in terms of performance and both teams would likely be bottom feeders without either.

Really? Who does Mcdavid play with on the Powerplay - a category he leads the league in?

Mcdavid is 7th in P/60. Mcdavid averages about 45 seconds more of PP time per game than Gaudreau. This equals 60 more minutes of PP time over 80 games.

Gaudreau's season is far more impressive in my opinion.
And Gaudreau has had the benefit of playing with two 40-goal scorers on his line for every single game this year

you can make a case for a ton of different players using stats

It has to be between Gaudreau and Josi at this point. McDavid will win many times anyways and the Leafs are just as good without Matthew's.

They shouldn’t hand the award out based on who will win it more times, it’s not a participation trophy.

Does the judgement for Hart trophy end in the regular season or does it extend to what they don't he playoffs?

Hasn't been a 60 goal scorer in 10 years... And when there has been that player won the Hart, but there has also been a ton of other players doing great things this season so I feel this year's going to be the toughest.

Which is why I ask if they will still be watching to see if anybody separates themselves from the group of nominees in the playoffs.

No it doesn’t and the last 60 goal player did not win the Hart.

It’s a regular season award and a lot of people have already decided, ballots probably can’t go in until after the last game.

Stamkos played all 82 put up 60, but couldn’t crack 100 (til now wtf). What Matthews did this year is more comparable to Malkin’s season that year when he won.

The playoffs do factor in in a way - only three times has the Hart gone to someone who missed, last time to Mario in 1988 and he had 168 points.

People really need to learn to stop comparing raw totals from seasons that are 10 years apart. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand league-wide scoring trends and how certain eras of hockey are higher or lower scoring than others. It's the reason we don't say Alexander Mogilny is a better goal scorer than Ovechkin because Mogilny got 76 goals and scored 50 in 46 games while Ovechkin didn't.

If we use Hockey-Reference's era-adjusted stats, Stamkos' season is the equivalent to 68 goals and 109 points, while Matthews' is the equivalent to 60 goals and 105 points.

Stamkos was the last to score 60 and he didn't win the Hart, as Malkin comfortably outpaced him in total points and was the better player, similarly to McDavid this year over Matthews.
