I'm not for or against your position, I just look forward to looking at the data that supports that conclusion.

Just going to quote a few posts from Zybalto since he has a lot of detailed posts on the subject

Start of 2019-January 14th of this season:

5v5 Goals Against/60:
Bergeron: 2.14
Matthews: 2.19
Barkov: 2.29

It's hard to believe so many are grasping at the straw that its somehow that Matthews forgot how to play D the last 3 months and not that Toronto's 32nd ranked goaltending had something to do with it.

Stop using Goals against to judge D folks. Look at the actual defensive numbers.

Let me know if I missed anything.

You are a sad, bitter little guy, aren't ya? LOL.

Well, you might be very disappointed soon! We shall see, as it's a complete tossup for a bunch of guys.

You seem to be the one who is bitter, lol.

Not a fan of either team Just calling it how I see it... Fyi I would give the Pearson to Matthews.

Let's not forget that it's the media who votes on the Hart. Matthews will get the Eastern/Toronto media bias and will probably win the Hart. There are too many out there that like to diminish McDavid's value and season based on the old thought that Edmonton is a bad team or that he can't win. Add in McDavid fatigue and AM34 is the winner.
McDavid will win the Lindsay though as the players all know who is the best player in the league.

Let’s not act like McDavid is a better choice than Mathews

did you actually look at it? Price #2? McDavid in the rankings for best 2 way player?
Its clear the players didn't take this seriously

I'd just like to point out that this seems to be another example of double standards if it doesn't suit your player.

In this specific case, because the players didn't vote Matthews as the most complete player or the best or whatever other category, then the list is a joke and the players don't really know what they're talking about.

But Leaf fans were so quick to keep quoting Barkov from a season ago or whatever where he said Matthews was the toughest player he's gone up against (or whatever the exact quote).

It's just weird that in one case, players don't know what they're talking about while in another case, a player's opinion should be viewed as the gold standard.

Shouldn't we just appreciate the fact that their is at least 5 or 6 guys who deserve to be the Hart winner this year. Obviously, some people are going to be upset, but you really shouldn't complain no matter who wins it.

I guarantee you if Matthews didn't play with Marner his giveaway-takeaway ratio would be significantly less flattering, as he would be looked at to carry the puck more. McDavid spends a ton of time with the puck, meaning his giveaway total will be inflated.

The other thing is McDavid spends 90% of his time in the offensive zone. That's what makes him an elite two-way player, not his defensive game per se. As the saying goes, the best defense is a great offense.

You sure about that?

Matthews’ rookie season where he played with a mix of rookie Hyman/Brown/Nylander

76 takeaways 44 giveaways

Can you imagine putting up like twice the amount of assists with only 8 more giveaways? With probably thousands of extra touches on the puck? Absolutely incredible.

Is there any doubt still? There really shouldn't be

Matthews has a very compelling case. His goal scoring exploits (especially at even strength) and despite what the herd at HF says a very strong two-way game. I think he leads the league in takeaways. It's also the Toronto factor and the fact that they have had a great year. I will also say McDavid may get dinged a bit for having Draisaitl on the same team even though Marner occupies a similar function on the Leafs.

McDavid and Draisaitl don't play together 5 on 5. McDavid's most common linemate is a 35 point Puljujarvi. They are not the same.

Matthews best winger is way better than McDavids best winger. Matthews second best winger is way better than McDavids second best winger. These things should absolutely be taken into account.

It is a close race but im giving it to McDavid now. He has upped his defensive game a lot aswell as the season has progressed. I think we will see a different Playoff McDavid than we have seen before.

Did Stamkos win the hart when he score 60?
Did Stamkos score 60 in 73 games?

Did Stamkos score 50 in 50 for first time since Lemieux?

Did Stamkos pace at approx the same points per game as the eventual art Ross winner?

Did Stamkos lead team to postseason?

Lol at people using the Stamkos 2011-12 season as a comparable. The Lightning went 38-36-8 to miss the playoffs. Everyone knows you can’t win the Hart if you miss the playoffs so that argument is moot since the Leafs will finish as a top 4-5 team this season.

But but but an 8 game sample size says the Leafs would be just as good without him. Lol gtfo haters

Not that incredible when you realize how much Matthews passes the puck all over the ice.
