One thing I think might be working against McDavid though is the expectations. His season last year and start this year had people talking about 140 points. Even if he ends up with a decent lead in the Art Ross race, I wonder if voters will not be as willing to vote for him if it’s seen as just a “typical” McDavid season, even if he’s the best overall. Especially with how many other good seasons/story lines there are this year.
McDavid is hurt by having by far the lowest 5vs5 oish% of his career. He probably "should" be running away with the Art Ross, and there's a good chance he still does it, but a big part of why he's not pacing for close to 140 points has been bad finish from his linemates.

I'd say that Matthews and Shesterkin are ahead now, but it'll come down the wire. Matthews case is hurt a bit by missing 5 games.

McDavid is starting to catch fire right now, he's playing lights out and showing why he's the best player in the world.

Wouldn't be shocked if he wins the scoring race by 15-20+ points ahead of anyone not named Draisaitl.
I'd also think McDavid moves to the top of this list by time the season is done.

“Secondary assists Huberdeau.” LOL. It’s almost like he’s damn good at facilitating plays whether or not he touches it last or second last. Hard concept to understand though I know.

It’s a little strange to be honest. If you replace almost anyone in the league with McDavid and overall impact he has on the game it’s not even a conversation for Hart. But because he essentially had a “subpar” couple months people overlook him ?

Oilers without McDavid would be a bottom 3 team in the league

One of the "expert" voters of that poll has Ovi in first place.

Sadly, a good reflection of the state of current hockey media.
When he caught Covid and had a slump the team went like 2-8-3. He's playing well again and they're on a winning streak. Plus half the top 6 has missed significant time and he carried them. It's not an unreasonable position to take.

Plus he has 43 primary assists and 23 secondary.

I don’t think it’s strange to hold McDavid accountable in voting for a “subpar couple months”. He might be the most valuable player in a vacuum, but he still needs to perform to win a single season award. I don’t think it’s fair that McDavid is measured against himself, but it happens a lot in various sports. LeBron, Jordan, Trout, etc.

3 point game for McDavid as the Oilers beat the Devils just now.

5 straight games with a goal. Oilers win all 5 games at home this stretch.

McDavid is back in this conversation. 11 points his past 5, he’s starting to get a bit more puck luck of late. His on ice scoring percentages are still way under his career norm though.

I'm not discounting his point totals, simply pointing out Matthews is far more valuable to Toronto, than Huberdeau is to Florida. Matthews has the same amount of ES points in fewer games played, 24 more goals scored overall, the difference in their point totals is literally the amount of PP opportunities they get and games played. The reason that was brought up was to compare their offensive production, clearly Matthews is superior in that aspect.

The main point is Florida is quite easily still a top team in the Atlantic without Huberdeau, the same cannot be said for Toronto without Matthews. This is the MVP trophy, on no planet is Huberdeau more valuable to his teams success than Matthews.

Didn't the Leafs just go 2-0, including a win over a top team in Carolina, without Matthews? I don't think the Leafs are any more reliant on Matthews than Florida is on Huberdeau. Not unless you can show me their record without Matthews being bad (which if I recall, it's actually not).

Matthews is likely going to run away with the Rocket. I think as long as there's a significant points gap between him and the leaders, there's no guarantee he's a Hart favorite anymore.

I'm an Oiler homer, but it would be damn hard not to hand it to Matthews if he pots 60 despite his suspension.

60 is absolutely ridiculous.

It depends. Is he 5 points behind McDavid? Sure - give to Matthews.

Is he 20 points behind? Then no...

McDavid scored 41 points in last 17 games last year.

With Matthews in 7th in scoring, 15 points back and out of the running who do you guys have as the 3 nominations?

Those Evolving Wild guys are the last people to ever chirp someone for their opinions on Hart voting after their idiotic takes on Nichushkin deserving it more than Draisaitl a couple of years back.
