Some all time over thinking in this thread. Matthews will win this by a landslide. The Vegas betting odds also reflect that

Every year a goalie finishes with the highest gaa and save percentage. Doesn't mean they win every year.

And I didn't say no votes. He's going to collect a pile of 3rd, 4th and 5th place votes.

Yeah, but it's not every year that they are .008 up on 2nd place and are sitting at .935 during a year when scoring has jumped up.

Shesterkin against the backdrop of what this league has been offensively this year is insane. And it's not like he's insulated by a good defensive team either.

I’m a huge Igor fan, but the Rangers have started to become a good defensive team. The rise of the Miller-Trouba pairing is for real.

Factor in Leafs as one of the top scoring teams in the league are near the bottom when it comes to PP opportunities and then consider the pic below and then argue Matthews is not HART worthy given the ppg, points/60 and Goals scored.

Matthews is the obvious front runner, but I keep seeing the points/60 argument, and honestly nobody is going to care about that statistic when voting.

Matthews is making a legit case for the Hart, I wouldn't be mad if he won it. McDavid is neck and neck with him right now though.

I will say thought that tonight's game is like a perfect summary of McDavid's season. Setting up his teammates left and right with high danger scoring chances, Nurse hits a bar, Puljujarvi misses two golden opportunities, Nuge gets absolutely robbed by Kuemper, etc.

He's getting extremely unlucky right now, and it's bound to change soon.
Well his luck will need to change soon he's running out of time.

If Matthews ends up with 65+ goals and potentially a 10+ spread over Leon, stays a close second to McDavid's PPG total and the Leafs finish strong (not all that relevant but if he's scoring, they're winning). Those are really tough numbers to overlook.

Huberdeau, Matthews, Gaudreau, Kaprisov, Josi and Shesterkin in the running. Anyone of these 6 could win it.

Draisaitl and Connor is neck on neck, so they are not more valuable alone to their team than any of the 6 above, so they are out of it.

You’re kidding yourself if you think that. Without either McDavid or Draisaitl the Oilers are a lottery team. Both are incredibly important to the team

See the bolded part above. They cancel each other out since they are both equally valuable to their team while the other 6 are standouts on their teams, making them more valuable to their respective teams.

If you want to discuss who´s the best player, then thats another story :)

Tough, tough year to pick three finalists let alone a winner. Can make a compelling case for all of Matthews, Gaudreau, Kaprizov, Josi, Shesterkin, Huberdeau, & McDavid.

Matthews probably wins with Gaudreau and Huberdeau rounding out the top 3.

Ovechkin scored 50 goals to H.Sedin's 29 in 2009/10. He was 3 points behind in the scoring race despite playing 10 less games.

He still lost the Hart.

Who knows what hare brained idea the Hart voters will come up with this year. Wouldn't surprise me to see Matthews win it because all Toronto media vote him first and leave McDavid off the ballot or something equally ridiculous.

Top 8 favourites for the hart in my opinion:

1. Huberdeau
2. Matthews,
3. Gaudreau,
4. Kaprisov,
5 Josi
6. Shesterkin
7. Draisaitl
8. McDavid

The winner will probably be Matthews, Huberdeau, or Gaudreau, and for 4th most likely I'd put... Drai. Drai is still in play if he somehow manages to get 1st in goals and assists.

Even with his career low OISH he's leading the league in points. And the Oilers are comfortably in a playoff spot.

I think he's pretty happy with where he's at. It's kind of hilarious how people are acting like McDavid is struggling. He's first in the league in points on a playoff team, I doubt he's focusing on regular season awards at this point.

lol yep. McDavid has 5 more points than Gaudreau.

Next time the Oilers lose on a pp goal against we'll just refuse the loss, they're clearly worth less than 5v5 points.

The idea that McDavid, who has the most dominant ES scoring season in his era, needs the PP to generate his offense is pretty silly.

Among the forwards, there is no player that clearly stands out on their team scoring-wise.

If you want to focus on "value" here are the compelling narratives:

Gaudreau's line is the most valuable in the NHL and Gaudreau is the best player on that line

McDrai is the most valuable duo

Matthews' goalscoring adds value to his point total but he has the most support

Huberdeau is the most valuable in the traditional sense given his point lead over 2nd on his team but it is not anything special considering Barkov missed some games.

It likely will be Matthews given the hype but this is the closest Hart race in a long time.
