There’s been a lot of tremendous individual achievements but I don’t think this is a close race. The hardest thing to do in this league is to score goals. And you simply cannot argue with the rate Matthews is putting the puck in the net right now.

I agree that the only way he loses is if enough Leaf hating reporters (they exist) put him 4th or 5th on their ballots.
The Hart trophy is "The most valuable to his team". Does he have a very legitimate chance of winning? Of course. Who do I think has had the biggest positive impact on their team? Id probably lean towards Shesterkin but I understand points is the sexier thing to see on a stat sheet

Shesterkin’s issue is that he has fallen somewhat over the part few weeks.

But when you look at how abnormally high league scoring has been, his potentially having the highest save percentage of all time is more impressive, considering the scoring environment.

If Josi can drag the Nasville team to playoffs it should be his trophy as I think he is the most valuable to his team by far. Without him Nashville would be out of the race and they would be planning what to do in the summertime already.

I'll admit that Matthews is probably the front runner now. There is still 10+ games to play though, I hope the race stays exciting down the stretch because it's good for hockey.

This is Matthew's to lose. Breaching 60 goals and 100 points (and then some most likely), 51 in 50. Can't see an argument for anyone else, bar maybe Josi.

Matthews has a slight edge right now, if Josi breaks 100 points he will win, McDavid hitting 130 points and possibly 50 goals would also be another feat not seen in a long time.

Race could still go many ways the last stretch of the season here

Honestly I don’t think it’s enough to have him as the overall #1 but I can’t deny anymore this season it’s him. If anyone else’s guy was having his season they’d say it’s obvious

If AM34 gets ~65 goals with 100+ points should give him the edge for MVP. I never imagined as Leaf’s fan he’d reach this type of highs.

He has turned into such a complete player.

I think it’s pretty clear if you look at the past decade of Hart Trophy winners that the “most valuable to his team” descriptor isn’t really what most often is the result. All tremendously valuable to their team, but the vast majority of them were just the player people deemed to have had the best season. And this is made doubly clear when you compare how many of these players also were picked by the players for the Ted Lindsay Award as well.

I must have been really stupid to think this was a trophy for the most valuable player for his team on a 82-game stretch. Glad you guys helped me to learn it's actually a trophy for the best 50-game stretch during the season.
Wow that’s an ice cold take. Matthews has been the best player in the league for 2 years now ;)

Matthews is making a legit case for the Hart, I wouldn't be mad if he won it. McDavid is neck and neck with him right now though.

I will say thought that tonight's game is like a perfect summary of McDavid's season. Setting up his teammates left and right with high danger scoring chances, Nurse hits a bar, Puljujarvi misses two golden opportunities, Nuge gets absolutely robbed by Kuemper, etc.

He's getting extremely unlucky right now, and it's bound to change soon.

So Igor finishing with the highest Sv % and GAA in the league should get no votes.

Gotcha.

Each ballot has 5 players on it and he named his top 3, so....?

Igor will be getting some votes but he also will only play in 55-57 games tops and that's going to weigh on some voters minds and in goalie circles some people actually prefer Saros although I have no idea on what criteria voters use if and when they put goalies on their ballots.

Historically goalies tend to do better when forwards don't shine but obviously that isn't the case this year.

If someone not named McDavid was playing like he is, that players would be in every Hart post as top3 candidate. And often #1. This should be 3/4 horse race. It depends on what you value most in your voting.

1. If you are choosing most important player for your team (and making playoffs), it's Josi, Sheshterkin and McDavid.

2. If you are choosing best player, it's McDavid or Matthews, maybe Josi.

3. If you are choosing, most unique season it's Matthews, Josi or maybe Gaudreau.

For #1, teams wouldn't make playoffs without those players. Sheshterkin has most likely played too few games to win, but even with that amount of game his impact is huge.

I would most likely give my first and second vote for McDavid and Josi. Don't know, which one is #1. Matthews and Sheshterkin as #3 and #4, don't know order. And maybe Gaudreau #5. But I can easily understand any other order for top 4, but can't see any reason to drop any other than Shesterkin out from there.

Every year a goalie finishes with the highest gaa and save percentage. Doesn't mean they win every year.

And I didn't say no votes. He's going to collect a pile of 3rd, 4th and 5th place votes.

Factor in Leafs as one of the top scoring teams in the league are near the bottom when it comes to PP opportunities and then consider the pic below and then argue Matthews is not HART worthy given the ppg, points/60 and Goals scored.

Even Josi has strikes against him too of course.

Is he really more valuable to his team than Saros who has played 60 (!) games with a .921 save%? (His backup is .890 in 11 games this season)

Does Josi get all those assists without:

I still think Josi is in a battle for the Norris with Makar but hitting the century mark for points will certainly puts the odds in his favor.

As it stands, even looking at production, Makar has 6 more goals and Josi has ten more points with Makar having played one less game. Just looking at primary points, it narrows more to 54-51 Josi.

A lot can change in the Norris race over the last 10 or so games here IMO.

Not deliberately trying to crap on Josi here, just pointing a couple of the strikes against him. He's been one of the best dmen in the world for a long time now and would be a fine Norris selection.
