I’d rather have neither.

The futility of the team last year solidified the path forward and, NHL lotto gods be with us....I'd much rather have Seth Jones anchoring the defense with Bedard/Michkov/Fantilli going forward than what we gave up for Jones + whatever stuck against the wall this upcoming year without us going full tank.

I'm also holding out hope we can resign Cat in 2 years and thus we end up with Korchinski + Cat and the better chance at the top 2 coming up when all is said and done.

My perspective is just that we haven't had prospects like these guys since Matthews. This is the year I want to tank and I'll accept whatever had to happen with the team/trades to get us into that top 3.

I would have waited a year or two from now to spend that money and just spend it elsewhere.

It’s not like Seth Jones is a level of talent you can’t not acquire when he’s available.

He pretty much had all the power in that negotiation. The team had to sign him or they'd be lambasted for merely getting a season of production out of the trade.

Good for him. $10.5m is a damn good annual payday.

Wonder if Calgary would be interested in Kane or Toews after the Huberdeau extension. Couple first round picks and take Lucic’s contract back to make room for one of them max retained.

I think Toews in Calgary could actually work very well. I’m sure he’d fit into Sutter’s system effortlessly and the possibility of him taking the Giroux route by taking the face offs but mostly playing the wing position in zone would probably take pressure off of him and lead to more production and longevity.

Everyone would rather have Jones. What he said is that he’d prefer EK, Boqvist, the #11, and the #6 to Jones and his contract. The Jones trade was an absolute disaster. I can’t think of a worse nhl trade by a floundering team.
It doesn't work like that. If EK is preferred, then the trade San Jose made to acquire him also has to be part of the discussion. Bogus slanted arguments are nothing new in reliving unpopular transactions.

/\ True, but the bottom line is Stan was wise to steer away from EK but failed miserably by paying the price for Jones... and then signing him for (too) much term. This move to "re-tool" was an act of desperation from a delusional GM.

Way to completely miss the point. No one wanted EK either.

There is just something about Toews in Calgary that seems like it would be a good fit and match.

I can think of 2 posters who wanted EK but yeah, virtually no one else.

Feel for Lehner. Dude was battling through a lot last year only to have his dummy of a coach to proclaim he was healthy and should be playing in the media. This is gonna be his second major surgery since then and he hasn’t played more than a couple games in that time frame. I can’t imagine the odds of returning to form after hip surgery on the wrong side of 30 are very high as a goalie either.

It’s actually pretty remarkable that DeBoer entered a situation with two number 1 goalies and alienated himself from both of them in less than 3 seasons. Have to think this played a part in why he wasn’t given any leash for the injury riddled season last year.

Big opportunity for Thompson though. Like him a lot as a goalie.

Nolan Patrick going to LTIR

That has to be the worst pick made post-Yakupov

EDIT: Okay to be fair, worst pick made post-Griffin Reinhart
