NHL 24 Discussion

Some players are missing in NHL 24. I don't get why Rangers prospect Ryder Korczak is missing in NHL 24, but he was in NHL 23 on Moose Jaw in the WHL. I don't get why some players are missing from the game considering they were in the previous game and still playing in juniors

i think they are in the nether

probably roster updated the chl based on their current rosters and thise guys aged out

but they also arent technically in ahl or nhl yet, so they dont exist

Korczak was in NHL 23. I know that for a fact. I had him in Hartford during one of my seasons in franchise mode

I know, I’m saying between last year and this year they aged out of the chl but havent “started” their ahl/nhl careers yet
Barbashev, Othmann are both in the game. Edstrom is too. Sykora isn't yet. Shocked they don't have the Slovak league in NHL 24

Going from 14 to 23, I felt the improvements of 9 iterations, but 23 had a few annoying issues that I'd be looking to be changed/fixed in 24. Can someone let me know if the following were changed?

- Tutorials. Mostly for dekes. Looks like theres a decent amount of dekes that require some specific controls. Would be nice to habe a tutorial mode that shows me how its done and to try it.

- Stick lifts being an almost automatic 2. Its too random. Same positions, it feels like a 50/50 to get a 2 from stick lift. Also on the side of the boards its almost always a 2, but stick lift is a very common way to strip people off the puck. Players irl dont always whack it like crazy lol.

- at the opposite end of the spectrum, pokechecks being wayyy too strong. I cant stick lift, so I spam pokecheck. Its very easy to avoid penalties using it, and is the one defensive move that works consistently/at all beside hitting.

- im not sure what mechanic this is called, but blocked pass/shots and pass deflections seemed so high against the AI. Like, the physics engine would prioritize the interception and ignore the stick on the person being intercepted. Multiple times where a one timer was attempt was intercepted just befire the shot, and instead of two sticks colliding, the shioter's stick would just whiff through the intercepter's stick and body without impacting their puck control at all. Thats just weird and is frustrating because it led me to stop attempting anything but the safest plays.

On that note, can't pass on 2 vs 1 against an AI bc their stick would always flip to imtercept it. Amd I mean it, FLIP. Defenseman could be skating backwards and you make a pass from behind their skates, and their upper body would contortionate in a fraction of a second like a demon to intercept.

- any improvements to pass accuracy? Maybe thats a me problem, or maybe I can adjust my joystick? Seems like when I try to do a pass and two linemates are on the passing lane (for eg in the offensive zone with one in front of the net and one on D), it would go to the one firthest from a scoring chance. Very frustrating and again led me to play a very selfish game offensively.

- is the friendly ai better at positioning? Really enjoyed defensemen joining the rush in 23, big change from 14. However, oftentimes you'll be in offense trying to open a lane, and either linemates dont move at all while being fully covered, or they move away from any type of shooting position. either theyll stick to your own player (wtf) or just move somewhere nonsensical.

Again, leads to a lot of selfishness in the ozone bc, in addition to be difficult to pass to, players are positioned like crap

Anyway, im not here to trash the game, just wanted to know if any of these were changed/fixed in 24 as I see some mention a few changes. I have game pass so at thia point I'm waiting for the game to come on it if nothing really changed.

First impressions are pretty good, even if I had to turn hitting way up on both sides, and rebalance puck control to even out the usual EA nonsense of having opposition players stick the puck to their players like magnets but your players turn it over at the drop of a hat. Human passing had to be tweaked too. But the sliders work and it’s more balanced than last year.

Now if only we can adjust the zone pressure tired goalies with options/sliders we may be onto something.

Going to do further slider tweaking to get to NHL shot levels, they’re still too high after the playability/bakance fixes.

This is contractural, they aren’t in the NHLPA until they play an NHL game. So wait for the roster update a week or two into the season.

AHL takes EA longer for some reason. I usually don’t start my Franchise until closer to American Thanksgiving unless some awesome roster editor adds those players beforehand and shares it.

Every year there are a bunch of players who are missing in the game to start off the year, and it usually isn't until a couple roster updates into the season that they're all resolved.

In your particular cases:

Korczak-In the last roster update of NHL 23 he was still in the juniors on Moose Jaw. Even though technically in real life at that time he was up in the AHL on Hartford. But I don't think EA pays much attention to those late season CHL/AHL call-ups. If EA would have had him on Hartford on that last update, I'm pretty sure he would have been on Hartford to start NHL 24. And as Izzy said, he's too old to go back to Moose Jaw. So he's lost in the shuffle for now until he plays in the NHL/AHL this season.

Barbashev & Othmann-Both were in the game last year on their junior teams and are still age-eligible to play there this year.

Sykora-Kind of similar to Korczak. He played 6 total games for Hartford but was never in NHL 23.

Another thing that muddies the water is both Korczak & Sykora were on ATOs when they played for Hartford. Which means they weren't part of the union (PHPA). So legally EA might not have been able to add them to Hartford even if they wanted to.

I play a passing game, and I really like that part of the new game. I am 45 and as an older guy with no longer the eyesight I used to have, especially colors, that on ice meter and following countdown makes it really hard for me to love this game. It is the most disrupting thing I have ever seen in a videogame. Let me turn it of or move it off the damn ice, please.

Love cycling the puck and getting shots from the point. I increase penalty frequency slightly and goalie reactions / abilities to about 80 on franchise or 95 on BAP to avoid insane scores. For my playing style, this is my favorite since 2004. Full disclosure: I play a realistic game and don’t spam ridiculous dekes. I also focus on defensive positioning, clearing the front of the net, blocking shots and fighting for possession along the boards.

The game is as realistic as you want it to be. Sliders are your friend.

Because people are miserable, and this is one of the things they are used to being miserable about. Entitled complainers.
They’re also not professional developers or programmers. I’m a quantitative developer at an energy fund, and I can tell you that even seemingly minor tweaks take more than a smile, let alone incorporating new mechanics or features. When you think about functionality, integration, scalability, extendibility and stability … it’s quite daunting to release such meaningful changes (contrary to popular belief) every year.

This is an every year struggle. But honestly it's nice that the first update does have a great chunk of the chl added already which used to be a struggle. I don't usually get a worthwhile roster to begin a full tweak edit until late November.

Biggest real gripe so far is that the edit or create a player salary bar is uber slow 🐌 🤔

Not sure why that is....

Agreed. If there was a tutorial mode when you first boot up the game I think I missed it. Would be nice to go back and learn the new deking system in a more guided way.

It's an absolutely ridiculous avalanche of bugs, counterintuitive and confusingly laid out menus (tiny gear icon as Settings at the complete bottom of the CHEL main menu - WTF?).

I have no idea how this game was allowed to be released. So far.

1. Our 2-player CHEL club shows "24" as the jersey number and/or Joe NHL instead of the jersey number and name we chose. No rhyme or reason for it. We ensured to have configured our Pro Player with that info (instead of the Casual Player), yet it happens entirely randomly. Sometimes, even just one of us has the standard 24-wearing Joe NHL while the other has his own guy. All player types (Casual, Pro, etc) are all set to "Active" but I wish they could all be disabled with the exception of Pro, as it might help with this issue.

2. Can't see which jerseys are picked by the opponents which creates confusing matchups with similarly colored uniforms. Very irritating.

3. Hitting is next to impossible regardless of which control scheme is used (I went with True-Stick - or whatever it's called).

4. The ring beneath the player is too subtle. The indicator on the head of the player was MUCH better!

5. Cinematic goal celebration is dumb. Wish that could be disabled.

6. Play-by-play by that woman sucks compared to last year's. Don't like her voice, either. Disabled it entirely.

7. Dumping the puck appears to require a Herculean effort by both us human players as well as the PC, as if next to no one has the strength to lift a puck to travel 20ft.

8. Still can't believe there's no Import feature to bring your club from last year's game into the new game. I've been requesting this forever and it'd save plenty of people a lot of headaches from having to recreate stuff like this every year.

Plenty more issues but really,... it's puzzling to me how this got greenlit at all! If I released work that incomplete or half-assed, I'd be embarrassed. 23 wasn't smooth sailing either but it was not this bad at all. I'm genuinely shocked at how terrible this game is, currently.

Is this game worth a Black Friday pick up? For someone who’s an offline player. Or don’t even bother wasting the cash?

How do you clear the puck in the D zone lol? If you’re on a PK, you just can’t, I guess? Or am I missing something?

I just look for a lane and use the regular shooting button.

Lobbing the puck above everyones heads and across the rink is better. Aim at the other teams goalie and it can bounce in

The problem, for me atleast (I am a developer myself), isn't the developers as I assume they are good at their job. Problem is man power and wrong priorities. Someone at EA thought it was worth investing time in the new goal celebrations almost everyone hates instead of implementing other things (like a simple toggle for the pressure meter).
