This is the biggest issue for me. I'll consciously not be holding down L3, but he still goes into puck protect mode if I'm going too fast while using the right skill stick. It's beyond frustrating and has basically negated any chance I have at scoring on a breakaway unless I get enough room to where I can slow down to deke.

Also, I'm glad they nerfed the pressure system but there are still way too many players ragging in the offensive zone. The only thing I've found that is able to counter it is hitting, but that has too much of a drawback even if you barely miss.

As someone mentioned earlier, poking is super inconsistent. There are times where I've had good body position and timed it just right, only to see my player poke in a completely different direction even though I'm not using the right stick.

Saw this on reddit, but I'm having the same problem and haven't seen anyone come up with a solution other than you can't do anything if you want to skate fast:

Yep. The fact they took away the ability to stickhandle at full speed is mind blowing. Im not sure I’ll ever get used to it. I can’t believe they thought that putting puck protect on the right stick while at full hustle was a great idea. Unbelievable

I was like you. For years and years I was scared of the skill stick. Dude you have to make the jump. I'd recommend using the skill stick that came out in 2007. Just get used to it. Never mind the new controls, just skill stick. Once you get used to it you won't ever go back. Then after you get good with it try out the new ones.

So I love the gameplay. It's dope, the crowd is dope. I was playing franchise as buffalo, I'm in the first round against Ottawa, game one in their building. I took a penalty early and the crowd is going nuts. They get pressure and just pepper me. Finally goalie just died and they score and the crowd goes nuclear. It's so intense... I won the game but only because I plaid smart. Dumped it in. Grinded and got the pressure meter going. Penalties are legit game changers as they should be. There is no ragging coast to coast b.s.

The first time in a long time I want to just play and play...

Nice try EA ...

I got rid of it....saw the reviews were horrible and should have avoided it but my son wanted to try it. No NHL 94 controls or Hybrid? The other controls are just too complicated. Plus the damn thing kept sticking constantly.

Also it's amazing they still don't upgrade some of the arenas or the center ice logos or arena names even. Stuff that's been gone for years. Oh well back to NHL 21 lol.

I never understood this take. Especially when they just created another simplified control system called 'Total Control' that allows players to complete complex animations with the push of a button.

You're putting yourself at a competitive disadvantage by not adapting to a system that's been available for more than a decade.

Run Free Skate with the pass suggestions on and go to town. Learn what the button combinations do. Then go tear the AI a new asshole on easy mode. It's literally that simple.

I have been to a few Gladiator games when they were Gwinnet. Good times.

I feel like sharing my first impression on NHL24.

Let's start with the positive:
* I like the pressure-feature. It's not smooth yet, but I hoped for something like that.
* I like how they made hitting much harder. It gives it a nicer and more realistic touch. Before it was too easy
* I like they added counter-hits - but I haven't used it much yet
* I like the passing feature where you have to hit a specific button to select the player you want to pass. it's more likely to play properly on a 3-on-1
* AI is a bit better/smarter and it got some nice upgrades in the gameplay/physics/scoring.

The negative ... well:
* total control totally sucks. Who came up with that? If you ever hold a hockey stick, you'd know that's a bad controlling option. I had to switch after a few games.
* the menu is still ridiculously slow, laggy, over-animated, etc.
* why adding new goal animations? big step back ..
* Franchise Mode? What the heck?

What pisses me off the most, is that players like me getting left out year by year. I don't mind playing online (CHEL) - I'd even want to play more but casual drop-ins are a pain. So I keep playing Franchise Mode.
Franchise Mode is ountouched it's been years they made proper ajustments. I don't expect a ton, but nothing at all? for years? I have been buying NHL around 20 to 25 times in my life. I'd say, I am an loyal and easy customer bringing steady revenue. I get, they need to earn money, but this is getting out of hand ... I bet, there's a ton of players like me. I want to chill, use my free slots and casually play some hockey with a certain development ...

So what's needed in Franchise Mode to make it playable again:
* fix the scouting. Or replace it with a simple random self-running system
* fix the staff management. It's a pain and really hard to hire matching coaches
* get rid of the marketing and stadium features, if you don't make them running properly
* Get us more stats on the main overview: next most important milestone of a roster player, point-streaks, ...
* try to give development more room
* Make the menu's slim and simple. instead of spending ressources on it.

Still trying to focus on the positive ones :D it's hard though as a gamer like me.

I'm endlessly amazed by people that have announced a control system "sucks" and they have abandoned it - or returned the game entirely - after giving it a try for only a few days.

Fifteen years ago, or whenever it was, that EA introduced the skill stick, a lot of players had to spend a few weeks learning the new controls and re-training their muscle memory. It's astonishing to see people that claim to have played for years and years and years try these new controls for a few days and then announce they are terrible and they are changing back or refunding the game.

You can't possibly understand the new controls and evaluate whether they are a step forward or a step back in a few days. You couldn't possibly have even "learned" them yet.

I remember how weird the whole skill stick scheme was when it was first introduced. I'd been playing EA NHL since the mid-90s when everything was simply done with D-pad and face buttons But like you said you eventually learn it and it becomes muscle memory. I don't even pay attention to what control scheme I prefer anymore. I read a lot about people hybrid controls or classic controls or whatever but most people could learn any control scheme if they just gave it time.

Money is no issue with these guys. Every sports game that has Ultimate Team bullshit all they do is focus on their money maker. They dont give 2 shits about the Franchise guys whether its MLB 2K Madden Chel. They say "we're listening" f*** outta here with that. they're listening to the money transfers to their accounts

This difference was that people LIKED the skill stick and thought it was awesome (it was). So nobody was upset about learning it.

This control system just plain blows ass.

You're not remembering this accurately at all. There were all kinds of people that complained about the skill stick when it was first introduced.
Maybe I’m not then, but i seemed to remember the majority being in love with it during that shootout demo they gave us to play around with it before the game was released.

This ended up going in. My buddies sniper and dangler builds keep missing the Michigan, but his PF build from 27 feet out nails it.

Here’s some more dopeness showing everyone how polished this turd nugget is.

To the left, I’m in the middle. Below me is my buddy sniper who’s a Devils fan. For some reason the game keeps adding his Devils avatar on my guy.

Here’s another example of how impressive this game is.

The game completely flops the avatars of our team vs the other team lol. And finally…

Our numbers should be yellow, but you can see here it for some reason is using the other teams blue. There are games where we have their socks too.

So, not only does the gameplay suck ass, even the simple shit developers got right 2+ decades ago seem to be beyond EA’s grasp.

That's a new feature in nhl 25.
