NHL 24 Discussion

Yea I think if they would have just not had an auto Michigan button they would have been fine.
Honestly, this decision just tells you all you need to know about the people who produce EA NHL. I get it, the Michigan was hard to pull off. So it should be. If you wanted to make it easier, increase the success rate of it while using the old controls. People have to learn many other dekes, so why not that one? Why put it on a button so every single person can do it without fail? Surely they know that the move is very rare, and only gets attempted, at most, a couple times a season, and only from a few different players. Why even allow players to do it who would *never* attempt it in real life?

It's just pure laziness. It's an insult against intelligence and common sense. EA NHL developers don't give a shit about how hockey is actually played, yet they paint themselves as the 'premier' NHL game. It should be labelled as an arcade game, because it is. It's nothing but a money making venture at this point. It's not made with love, it's not made with tact, there's hardly any consideration put into it. I'd honestly be shocked if any of the developers watch hockey on a more than casual basis.

Supposedly Rammer is a huge basketball fan so maybe that explains why it feels like I’m playing NBA Jam on ice most of the time

Comes down to sliders lads. Reduce hitting power to 20, increase goalies to 80-85, reduce tripping and high sticking penalties (so you can actually lift sticks and block passing lanes). Increase skating speed and acceleration to 55. Those are good starts.

This is on Pro. All Star feels stupidly rigged against CPU; also note that I play only Franchise Mode, against the CPU.

These changes have changed the game for me completely. Lots of cycling, focus on defensive positioning, no more than two big hits per game.

I'm pretty blown away by the endless complaining about the "Auto Michigan" considering I am now 64 games in playing CHEL 3's and 6's and I've seen one Michigan goal in that time.

There’s no way a deke should be 100x harder to pull off in a video game than in real life. Even if you don’t play hockey, within an hour of practising you’d be able to pull it off. It’s not hard, players don’t try it because it’s embarrassing if they fail and there’s a stigma to doing it, not because it’s difficult. It was insanely difficult in 23, I never even saw one person attempt it in my entire time playing online.

People complained the the gameplay needed work and always the same. Maybe it did need some tuning a bit I can agree but they changed it and now it’s honestly awful to play. I always thought the gameplay was fine the last few years and it was the modes that needed change the most.

100% agreed, what makes this game shit compared to other sports games isn’t the gameplay. It’s the fact that there’s less depth & customization to modes like Be a Pro & Franchise mode than there was in other sports games from like 2007. How on earth is there still no sliders for individual facial features & we’re still selecting from the same generic faces we were a decade ago? They literally go years without even touching certain modes.

I never saw it once last year either. I never saw it attempted either.

I would attempt it often when we were stomping lesser skilled teams, but I never had the stats to pull it off. All they really had to do was change the stat threshold and give people credit for timing the play correctly and attacking at the right angle.

People who used the secondary dekes benefit from using the shift keys. They got the benefit of the doubt with the bounces.

I think there should've been a greater focus on giving the defense and goalies a better tool to defend against the wrap, which was heavily abused last season.

Sorry, I should have been more clear, I did see it attempted, many times, but I meant that I never saw it done where it was stopped by the goaltender either. I saw it one time, for a goal, and I saw it attempted and either aborted (the guy just sort of stayed still crouched down at the start of the animation) or he got smoked by a defender before they got much further they the opening of the animation.

It's obviously very early days, but so far making it "easier" hasn't made any difference at all. Now, in a month when a large portion of the player pool has levelled up once, it might become an actual issue if the reason we aren't seeing it now is because the deke and skill levels of the load outs.

Yeah. I had teammates that could score off of it on breakaways. But the player type required would make that player a liability defensively.

I still have a difficult time seeing the issue that EA had with the skill stick.

I've put a few hours into the new game and I still haven't figured out how to manually check using the skill stick. Something as basic as hitting is now more complex because the animations have been mapped to their total control scheme.

I've seen firsthand that total control is an easier interface. But I struggle to see why that was ever a focus of development.

The hitting really took me awhile to crack, but I will say this, once you get into the rhythm and the timing for it, it's really satisfying to land your check.

It's much harder to do, but it should be much harder than it was. It was incredibly easy to play massive hits before. What I like about the new system is you can't just play like a wrecking ball with no consequences. If you go for a big hit and miss, you take yourself out of the play now which is much more realistic than the game has ever been about hitting. It's a risk/reward gamble when you go for a big hit or decide to take the body rather than a poke check or a stick lift, and it should be. Previously you didn't really have to choose, you could stick check and if that didn't work just lay the guy out, and that wasn't very realistic.

Cannot figure out how to take the puck away from people in versus. They just turn their back and the poke check is useless.

This is pretty much exactly how I feel. They have no pride in their product at all, the only thing that matters to them is how many games they sell in a fiscal year. The game is actually an embarassment, I don't understand how they can release such an awful game tbh. The eSport/competitive CHEL community has drastically shrunk in the last year because the game is not designed for us, the skill gap just gets smaller and smaller every year. Run truculence and press up!

Reading this thread I actually feel bad for enjoying the gameplay more than previous years. Everytime I try to go back to 23 and play my franchise, it feels worse than 24. I use AlTito's sliders in both and 24 just feels more fluid, passing feels better and I absolutely love the new hitting.

I've gone back to playing NHL 18 again. Franchise mode and scouting in particular feel better to me than newer versions.

When I'm desperate I go back and play NHL 14/15 on the PS3 with live the life mode, which is 200x better than whatever garbage be a pro is at now.

Either way I haven't bought it 4 years in a row now, tried the 10 hour trial and literally pissed me off how lazy EA is once again and many people basically gave them a free 100 bucks to play this shit.

Back to Franchise Hockey Manager I guess, There's no good hockey game with gameplay on the market.

I haven’t played video games as much as I used to. Now that my son has been sleeping through the night more often and frequently it’s nice to get back into it.

Same boat as you. I haven’t played the modern version of EHM in a long time. I always find myself continuing to play the 2007 version

Has anyone had any weird graphical glitches? I was playing as Winnipeg vs NYI and the player models were darker than they should have been. Meaning the white in Winnipeg's away jerseys appeared more as a gray color. I thought it was my tv settings but other games look fine.

I've seen a handful of them so far. Thankfully they made it much slower than it was in the last game, so it's easy enough to defend.

The issue is that I've pulled it off myself multiple times with builds that have low deking. Once with a 2Way Defenseman and once with a 2Way Forward. You should need to have very high deking for this to work.

We noticed last night we're starting to see the graphical glitches in created Club jerseys. Sometimes the outlining of our numbers/names will be the wrong color. We've noticed certain player models of opposing teams not rendering properly. A couple of times the logo on our jersey was not the same color.

And of course the same random green flashes and black streaks at times that have been present the last few games.

It's a cat and mouse game. You need to stand your ground between the puck and the net and ensure your supporting AI doesn't leave a cross crease attempt available.

Pokes and hitting animations are all-or-nothing attempts that essentially take your highlighted player out of the play.

To strip pucks, you need to anticipate when the puck carrier is going to make an attempt to get past you. Make your pivot when he does and either cut him off or make your poke then if you have the proper gap.

I completely lost interest in versus when puck ragging became the meta. It's just boring. And your greatest opponent is actually your AI.

I encountered the "All Black Uniform Bug" yesterday. Both teams were wearing all black uniforms with black numbers and black lettering.

Truly bizarre.

Yeah the jersey issues are really annoying.

One of my club members is colorblind, so we actually have to plan our jerseys pretty thoughtful, so it's pretty frustrating for this crap to not work properly.

Won't argue with that there are a lot of things where they have taken steps back. The awful goal celebration and slow menus in particular. I just like the gameplay more than 23 (and 19).
