NHL 24 Discussion

Seeing as how I said I played two games and quit like a few posts above that, I'll assume that's directed at me.

Like I said I actually kinda liked the changes. I could see it growing on me. The game itself, online at least, is just a brutal environment for learning new things. Probably the worst I've seen in literally any competitive multiplayer game. So many ways it not just encourages but participates in the poor sportmanship and toxicity by design. If you love it, you're probably a part of it.

Being fresh doesn't make up for it. I'm not a professional hockey player, I'm not paid tens of thousands to millions of dollars to put up with shit... I'm paying to be there. I don't have to put up with it. They've gotten enough of my money over the years. I'll pick it back up in 6 months when it's on EA Play/Game Pass.
You’re hardly the only person online saying something similar. It’s a joke you can think you’ve experienced the game after 2 matches in any mode. With as many changes as they’ve implemented there’s zero way you’re familiar enough with them to make any sort of legitimate critique.

EA sucks. I get it. I hate their guts too. Their games should be much, much, much better than they are. Don’t like it, don’t play it. That’s fine with me and most often I’m right there with you. This year they did a good job though and seeing all the online bitching let’s me know how out of touch the vast majority are with reality and like to complain just for the f*** of it.

The game is literally almost the same garbage. Not sure how you think it’s drastically different for the better. You’re the only person who I’ve seen say that so far. It’s OVERWHELMING negative.

And no, it’s just not “complain just for the f*** of it”, back in the day NHL 08-14 (roughly around there) the game was amazing and everyone praised it (aside from the 2K fan boys). Now the game just stinks because all they care about is online micro transactions.

I played a few offline games and I've liked it so far. Just need to get used to the controls. Feels weird changing lines with left and right on the D-pad. I also think some of the other dekes will have to be nerfed, pulled off a between the legs deke where the defender was right behind me and their stick messed up the deke animation but it still went in.

Impala just mad3 a point that you can't match. Walk away.

I never thought in a million years I would agree with you. Must be in a bizarro world.

EA doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt. Since 2015 they’ve been recycling basically the same game with next to zero significant changes to any modes, presentation, UI/UX, physics, gameplay, etc…

They prioritize micro transactions over everything and these games really should be a lot better than they are. They just so happened to make some good changes this year that I really like. Maybe I’m biased but I don’t see how so many people can hate the game so hard and so early. It makes me feel like people just like complaining.

Because people are miserable, and this is one of the things they are used to being miserable about. Entitled complainers.

NHL 23 really did have some bullshit in it that ruined gameplay. It was really lame playing against L2 spammers and behind the net spammers. They were exploiting a bad physics engine and unless you played like that games online weren't very fun. It seems like they fixed a lot of that and I love it.

People need to accept these games for what they are. EA has you by the nuts if you like playing hockey videogames. They’re cheap, lazy, and the yearly release cycle isn’t conducive to major changes. Accept it or don’t. People just whine about every single little thing. It’s so obnoxious. They’re so damn dramatic over this game franchise I think it’s pathetic.

The fact that they took out hitting has caused me to use the poke a little more than I'd like, and that's caused the extra penalties. I don't even bother sticklifting it though. We call that the penalty button lol.

12 tripping minors in the 1st period is pretty revealing that you are spamming it a bit too much though lol.
12 penalties was another poster with another game mode, i believe it was online versus played. Can't kick you out of that one i guess.
The issue for me was that in Club play (EASHL) that a player playing sloppy could get kicked out of the game the same way "Team Killers" in a FPS game gets kicked out.
For the record i got two minors in eight games as a defender. Poking works fine in my opinion. I've played D 15 years.

Ya the game is completely different from last year.

You can see the foundation for a pretty damn good game, but it needs some significant tweaks for me right now.

They destroyed the skill stick, even converting back to those controls it feels really bad.

Honestly think if they just completely reverted the changes to the skill stick, this would probably be the best game they've made on the new consoles.

I don't think you actually read what I said. I'm not critiquing the changes in NHL 24.

I'm critiquing the fact that the NHL games online have always been systematically designed to brutally, brutally, brutally punish people learning... worse than literally any online game I've ever seen, and that's a BAD thing... and this is the first time in many years they've changed it enough to have to learn. I refunded it, it's a major problem that I'll be happier to deal with when it's free with my Game Pass subscription.

The game is drastically different. I'm assuming you're playing the last gen version, which obviously is going to be the same game every year.

I skipped the past few releases going from nhl21 to this feels decent. There's a learning curve to the gameplay. That's all I can ask for to keep my attention and have fun with the game.

No I read it I just think it’s still an incredibly lame line of reasoning. “It’s too difficult to learn” doesn’t apply here. Take maybe 20 minutes and figure it out. JFC its such an entitled and bratty attitude from this community

Critiquing the blatant flaws a game has doesn’t make us bratty. If you’re happy with a shitty product, then congratulations for having such low standards.

When an overwhelming amount of the EASHL community are making the same complaints, it’s something the developers should take into consideration.

“It’s too difficult to learn”

Not what I said.

I'm not going to repeat it, since apparently "reading" here is skimming and poorly picking out keywords... so save us all some time and just stop trying.

EDIT: The sad thing is I'm probably one of the few people here who might agree with you. If you could just stop pushing the agenda for two minutes and figure this thing out with that big juicy brain of yours.

To be fair, I see nothing but others pushing how much this game sucks.

First patch came today, now that it’s officially for sale. Changes:

1). EA tapered the pressure system. Not just how quickly and easily the meter fills, but also how quickly the pressured team recovers. I don’t loathe the system like I did the last few nights. Huge difference. HUGE.

2). Hitting has gotten a slight boost. Not, laying guys in their ass with truculence hits, but just doing enough to break up a play when you have positional advantage and throw your body when you have momentum.

3). Lobby was less glitchy today. Found games quicker. Only DC’d once before a game started.

It’s playable now. Adjustments still have to be made, but I’m very pleased EA addressed some concerns that crippled the game.

I’ve edited rosters for about 5 teams and been messing with sliders and have played a few test games offline.

With my sliders I’ve noticed some things that are really enjoyable - puck seems looser, collisions seem a bit better, some of the controls are actually pretty enjoyable.

I still have work to do with the sliders but my last game is definitely getting there.

Shots were 41-33 (in favor of CPU), hits were 32-30, faceoffs were 22-13, each team took 5-6 penalties. Had a decent variety of goals scored - right now my two biggest gripes are:

The goalies are horrible! Why? They lay down for these silly desperation saves and take so long in this animation that they can’t stop the next routine shot. Even though the shot totals, hits, takeoffs and penalties were pretty dialed in for my last game, the final score was 8-5 because the goalies are just bad. And even though I got outshot 41-33 I was the one who scored 8.

The other big one for me is that the pressure meter fills WAY too fast and the amount that it depletes your defense’s speed is silly. But also… can anyone explain to me the logic behind full pressure expiring? Imagine having the puck in the zone for a full 2 minute PP and after 20 seconds the defense starts to fatigue and struggle, but then at the 1 minute mark they suddenly gain a boost? What? AND the meter starts over? So you never lost pressure but you’re gaining it again? Edit: I have not downloaded the patch yet, so I’ll test that out.

Aside from that, the biggest thing for me is pick protect. I don’t mind the face buttons because I won’t use them much, but I keep wanting to protect the puck with X.

Congratulations on the biggest reach in the history of reaches.

Still on the fence on if I am going to buy. I don't play online. :dunno:
Biggest reach? EA has released NHL for over 30 years. I know this, because I have played it ever since.

This is the first time they removed classic control option. Gladly, as some have said, it’s coming back.

Explain to me how this is one of “the biggest reaches in the history of reaches”?

The puck protect was really messing with me in the demo, gonna take some getting used to

Ya the puck protect was messing with me early on as well... But it is something I have mostly adjusted to so far.

My two biggest gripes with the game now are on the defensive side of the ice. Hitting feels so bad, and I was never a big hitter to begin with. But at least for me it feels so damn hard to connect with hits on a reliable basis at this point, and so easy to just completely take yourself out of the play entirely by going for a hit.

And then poke checking feels pretty bad as well. Sometimes clean pokes just do absolutely nothing.

It makes it extremely hard to play defense in something like EASHL to me. I played a bunch of games of that over the last few days and it was a real battle to be effective defensively.

Oh and I think the pressure meter is still too damaging for the defensive team. Needs to be further tuned so that you aren't completely useless when the other team has sustained pressure.

Aside from those issues the game is legitimately solid I think. Its also funny to see the few posters who were especially negative towards the game pre launch, continue to try and act like the game is awful despite all kinds of positive feedback for the game here but especially elsewhere, lots of praise for the gameplay on twitter and reddit, people seem to really be liking the direction its heading in.

Holy f*** the base game is HORRIBLE. I'll need to spend forever messing with sliders to get this to be even semi similar to hockey. Used up my trial so

The menus are even slower than ever before. Franchise mode is essentially the exact same but slower...cool.

The goalies are..?? i'm not even sure how to describe them, they jump and flop around the net like its rocket league, but can't stop a backhand to save their lives.

The passing continues to deteriorate in these games. The button passing feature is cool in theory, but

1) The AI are constantly out of position for some reason, so remembering who's who is useless. Obviously in the NHL players pinch, jump around a bit, etc, but it's constant in this.
2) The game gets faster every year, it's more of an arcade game than anything.

Those 2 reasons make the button passing feature a lot less appealing. It works in Fifa and Madden because the players are in their correct spots and the gameplay isn't sped up to the point of the person being in a massively different spot than they were when you started holding down the pass button initially.

This along with the new control scheme makes playing online uninteresting. This is the first one since at least NHL 13 that I'm going to wait until boxing day to actually purchase, and only if it goes on sale. Finally had enough of this series (after spending all of last year with the phantom controller glitch which they refused to fix, I still was willing to give this one a shot but good lord).

Some players are missing in NHL 24. I don't get why Rangers prospect Ryder Korczak is missing in NHL 24, but he was in NHL 23 on Moose Jaw in the WHL. I don't get why some players are missing from the game considering they were in the previous game and still playing in juniors
