NHL 24 Discussion

is there a way to skip the goal celebration cinematic? i don't need a separate scene of one player celebrating then another of a team celebration after every goal. just another awful addition to an already awful game

Play what you like, they cant satisfy everyone. Boohoo poor babies that cant turn off pressure meter. go play something else if its that big of a deal to you.

You’re ranting about people who played the game and are voicing their opinions, without you having even played the game. Do you realize what a foolish outlook that is..?

The pressure meter is a joke lol. Who comes up with these ideas?

I played NHL 24 for the first time and it was pretty disappointing. Probably one of the worst hockey games I have played in awhile.

They actually made a game where it's easier to do a michigan than bump your opponent with the puck. You can't make this shit up lol.

I think EA finally did it!!!

They reached absolute rock bottom with their biggest piece of trash to date.

NHL 24 is, without question, the worst EA hockey game I have ever played in my life.

My CHEL group which has been together since 16, has been deteriorating since ‘20, but we’ve still had 4-5 strong for daily CHEL 3’s. There are 3 of us left now.

Despite all the warts and issues the previous years have had, they were still somewhat fun and playable. If you loved hockey enough and needed to play it. Stressful at times but still tolerable and enjoyable.

2024 is absolute horse shit. As mentioned above, the f***ing Michigan is easier to pull off than a standard check. Who are the idiots at EA that collectively thought this was a good idea?

As bad as the hitting aspect is, which kinda breaks the game, the real backbreaker is the pressure system. You could be standing still in front of a goalie in your own zone, and if the other team has full pressure, you start losing energy. And to make things worse, even if you clear the puck out, you’re still slow as f*** for a little while.

It’s no longer, Your Team vs The Other Team. It’s become, who can manipulate this moronic, shortsighted component that changes the whole premise of the game?

The whole focus of this game has become, gain the zone and play keep away till you have full pressure and can finally score a goal against the Hasek on meth goalies that are impossible to beat clean, but still manage to let in the most idiotic and unexpected goals.

Our players names somehow randomly change to Jordan for some reason lol. My teammates complained about it last night, and it happened to me tonight. EA neglected my name, custom build and number, to a random player. Jordan. #24. Additionally, We lost our last game tonight against a team of 3 players named Jordan. All #24 lol.

What a trash f***ing game. It pains me knowing if changes aren’t made I’ll avoid this like the plague and that bothers me since I’ve been paying CHEL now for a good decade.

I personally thought 22 was the best game they made in years. While 23 didn’t have much improvements it was a better game than 22 and served its purpose as a yearly upgrade. It’s like they took something that was showing hope and needed some polishing and started from scratch but didn’t have time to fully finish the game for the release date. I don’t know if I’m making a lot of sense, but this one feels “different” but definitely not a good different. I truly feel this may be the game that pushes long time fans and supporters away from the brand. It’s awful top down. The franchise mode which was never great to begin with is worse. The gameplay is possibly the worse it has ever been. The menus are glitchy and laggy which for a PS5 game is honestly unacceptable. The new controls are truly wtf level (silver lining is that seems to have been fixed as you can go back to the previous), and the last thing I’ll say (although I have lots of other points) is that the game feels like it will not please it’s mature crowd. I know it’s a “kids game” but there was more of balance which catered to more mature players too. The boards lighting up, constant pop ups of different traits being activated, it’s like you’re playing a fantasy game.

I have to imagine they make this game specifically to attract the multiplayer and online crowd. If you are looking for a simulation style hockey game with realistic stats the game is terrible. I had low expectations and thought at worst this would be similar to NHL 23 with updated rosters but they have managed to somehow make the gameplay even worse in some aspects. Thankfully though they do give us a lot of sliders to alter the gameplay and I have already been tweaking them a lot and the game has improved quite a bit. I will do what I do every year and spend a lot of time tweaking sliders to hopefully make it into a game I can enjoy. Don't worry though, NHL 25 should be great!

Good rant sir! The player name changes between games because you have to create a character for home and away games separately which is beyond idiotic.

If you were playing club, you need to edit your player number on your home, away, and alternate jersey each separately.

Why there's no "apply all" I have no idea. Not sure why they even changed it to begin with.

Beat me to it.

Classic controls are apparently supposed to be added back with the first patch.
Thank god I saw this, was literally going to go pick it up now. It's not being added till the end of the month.

I realize I am a dinosaur, using classic controls for years. Not sure why EA felt the need to remove it. Seems like ageism.
I'm in the same boat, now will wait till Black Friday to get the game 50% off.

This is where I’m at. Physically it feels like skating and puck movement FEEL a bit better but the gameplay is atrocious. The first thing I do, for years now honestly, is edit every player who has any relevance to the NHL to try and make their attributes more aligned with reality. Adam Fox is not a 93 speed. He’s slow. Artemi Panarin does not have 90 defensive awareness. So I do this for all NHL rosters, prospects, likely call ups and even likely draft picks for the following year or two. I also create all of the missing prospects from leagues not included in the game.

That takes me anywhere from 3-8 weeks depending how much time I even have. Could be longer now that I have a kid. So the first couple months is just me editing nonstop and playing exhibition games in Play Now to test out the ratings. While I’m doing this I also dramatically edit the sliders and continuously tweak them whenever I play an exhibition game. Fatigue way up, pass accuracy and reception ease way down, pickup type and bouncing puck effects way up, speed down, agility down, stumble up, incidental contact up, puck control down, hitting power and aggressiveness way down. Those are the gist of the changes and I tweak and adjust until I have a slider set I like.

Once I have a slider set and finish the massive undertaking of creating every prospect and editing every player I usually can get to a point where the gameplay is pretty enjoyable. Around December or January I can start a franchise. I usually get a couple seasons deep before it unfortunately gets wonky with screwy trades, idiotic generated rookies, screwy free agency logic, etc. but at least I get to a point where I can play 2-3 seasons at a time before starting over because Blair Gretzky, a black kid from Russia, wins the Art Ross in year 3.

BEFORE I open my copy, can anyone tell me if the patch they put out today fixes the Franchise issue that Tougie mentioned (that he says makes it broken)? That cap-strapped teams suddenly end up with like 25 contracts or something like that?

I am obviously an Avs fan, and I will not play as any team other than them; and I'm a pure Franchise player.

Wow this game is horrendous and just wasted 65$

My first online versus game, I get 12 (TWELVE!) tripping minors in the 1st period. It was 5 v 3 almost whole game. Needless to say, I unplugged my xbox after the 3rd PP goal.

Turned it back on thinking maybe there's just something wrong with the connection.

Play another game.
Same thing.
Endless slew of tripping penalties.

Why EA crusades against poke checks and one timers I'll never understand other than people get whiney when getting outsmarted by them. They are very much a part of the game but now this shit is literally unplayable. I don't think I'll ever play this again. I'll be 30 soon and can much better use my time instead of losing my shit that I'm shorthanded almost the whole game.
Would rather actually play hockey instead of the non-stop frustration of other players toppling and diving around the ice whenever a stick gets near them.

Played 6vs6 CHEL.
A friend of mine took three tripping penalties in the first period. The game kicked him! It said he was benched! We had to play the rest of the game with AI in his spot. Such a mess this game is!
Edit: This was with our club. Not a drop in.

Or you could....not spam the poke check button?

I refunded NHL 24 after two online versus matches. Thankfully the Xbox allows for refunds or I'd be more annoyed than I already am. I'll just wait until it's on EA Play/Game Pass in 6 months or so. Seems like a good year to just stick with NHL 23 for a few more months (or better yet take a break from NHL) and use Game Pass as my yearly NHL upgrade.

It feels very different than 23 and while I'm actually willing to embrace it and learn the nuances (if there are any)... not at the expense of my sanity as people just f***ing skate past me, because half the shit I knew doesn't work anymore, and the other half of shit that seems to work, doesn't seem to work well.

It's not new to NHL 24 but whose bright f***ing idea was it to make it the goal scorers choice whether or not to watch the minute of replays after every goal? I never understood that. Imagine a FPS with a minute of replays every time you die, where the person that killed you decides how much of it you have to watch. Any other online game would get burnt to the f***ing ground.

Spam? It's in the game. Literally in real life and in the video-game. So it pisses people off if you use it too much. If it's effective, exists in the game, exists in real life, it should be fair game to use. It shouldn't give you a tripping penalty every time my stick hovers near an opponent's skates. So done with this game and each release unless there's a major update.

Plebeians, most of you. This is the best and freshest gameplay we’ve had in a decade. It takes a few games to get used to but the balance changes are fantastic.

The people saying “I played two games and quit” are fools. Chumps. Mooks. The new hitting system is amazing and fun, the pressure system is mostly great. Needs to be tweaked a little so it’s slightly more forgiving but otherwise I’m loving everything.

I’ve been complaining about EA for years but you’ve gotta call a spade a spade. They did a good job with this one.

The fact that they took out hitting has caused me to use the poke a little more than I'd like, and that's caused the extra penalties. I don't even bother sticklifting it though. We call that the penalty button lol.

12 tripping minors in the 1st period is pretty revealing that you are spamming it a bit too much though lol.

I've played about 30'ish games since the release. I appreciate that they actually tried to make changes for the first time in forever. However, I completely disagree and think this game is almost unplayable. We're going to keep playing and hope that first patch fixes some of the crap, but as of right now it's the worst hockey game I've touched in my life.

I played a game and didn’t take a single penalty. Mine must be broken I guess 🤷‍♂️

Seeing as how I said I played two games and quit like a few posts above that, I'll assume that's directed at me.

Like I said I actually kinda liked the changes. I could see it growing on me. The game itself, online at least, is just a brutal environment for learning new things. Probably the worst I've seen in literally any competitive multiplayer game. So many ways it not just encourages but participates in the poor sportmanship and toxicity by design. If you love it, you're probably a part of it.

Being fresh doesn't make up for it. I'm not a professional hockey player, I'm not paid tens of thousands to millions of dollars to put up with shit... I'm paying to be there. I don't have to put up with it. They've gotten enough of my money over the years. I'll pick it back up in 6 months when it's on EA Play/Game Pass.

No hybrid controls? That's really irritating. Using thos3 controls for like 15 years, have you learn how to play again.
