It would be so damn hilarious (and cool) if they started going through the picks and the very first two went out of order. Weeks of anticipation, surely a long TV buildup to a dramatic reveal, and then have it over in the first potential moment
Hilarious?! It might give Leonardo a heart attack.
And the 16th pick goes to.......the Anaheim Ducks. The fudge?! The fudge?! How did we drop to 16th?! ....throws remote into the air.

We're picking second. Have fun watching, everyone.

I'm ecstatic that we didn't finish with the second worst record!

I think finding out who wins the 2nd overall pick is probably the most interesting part of today's lottery. Since the inception of the multi-draw lottery in 2016, the second place team has always moved down. We were bitten by this curse in 2021 when we were the second place team. Let's see if this curse continues because statistically this should not happen seven consecutive times.

Where we finish in the draft is secondary to me b/c we will end up with essentially a #1 pick. Fantilli would be the #1 pick in the 2022 and 2020 drafts. Similarly, Carlsson would be the #1 pick in the 2022 and 2020 drafts.

Yeah, I actually think that if we get the 2/3 pick, it fits more into what we're building and if we get the #1 pick, it'll be restructuring it a bit. If you have big guys (Carlsson/Fantilli and McTavish), it's easier to have a few small guys around them (Z, Terry) and you can add one more small guy and a bigger guy or two big guys. If you get Bedard, you pretty much have to add 2 bigger guys to the top 6.

My guess is Chitcago (it's not a typo, say it out loud to yourself) gets #1. But I could see Detroit/Montreal getting 1/2 (if you believe in conspiracies).
Detroit- Bedard
Montreal- Fantilli/Carlsson
Anaheim- Fantilli/Carlsson
Columbus- Smith (because they've been hurting for that #1 C+ Russian factor)
Chicago- Michkov (then they get #1 next year or year after)

That gets all 3 O6 teams pick in the top 2 tiers of players.

But I think one of the O6 will move up (not conspiracy, two of them are just lucky) and one of Anaheim/Columbus gets the other pick (probably #2 because of luck).

Yeah, maybe it's just copium but I almost think Fantilli/Carlsson would be better long term fits as the team matures. Would be nice to actually have some size on the top lines once we start getting better and competing as a playoff team. Bedard isn't exactly "soft" persay, but adding him to the top six forward group on top of a D-core of guys like Zellweger/Fowler/Drysdale/Minty etc., that isn't exactly a very physically imposing lineup.

Hopefully Gaucher/Hinds can crack the lineup soon as well to add some size, but yeah. I'm not gonna lie and say I don't want Bedard more just for his caliber as an overall player, but we're gonna be fine no matter what.

No chance the league is letting us win this one. As long as we stay at 2 I’ll be happy. Missing out on Fantilli would suck.

Yeah, combined with Fantilli/Carlsson will be cheaper than Bedard so more depth in the lineup too.

Gaucher(?)/Jones(?)/???-McTavish-Terry
Zegras-Fantilli/Carlsson-???

That provides a lot more balance than:
Gaucher(?)/Jones(?)/???-Zegras-Terry
Gaucher(?)/Jones(?)/???-McTavish-Bedard

But you obviously can't pass on Bedard (unless the team at #3 offers you a boat load of picks/prospects including #3+potential future top pair D).

Translation:
Winning the #2 or getting the consolation prize of #3 makes GM Verbeek's job easier. Winning the #1 means GM Verbeek needs to be a better GM.

That sounds about right considering the massive failure of his NHL acquisitions last year. For the waiver wire pickups, we added Leason and Megna, but bypassed on Tolvanen. Fortunately, our prospects are going pro en masse, which feel like they'll produce better than Verbeek's pro acquisitions.

If we do win Bedard, then adding size to the wing isn't the only way to add size. We can add size with our blue line to complement having Big Mac with a couple of offensive smurfs. I remember the WJC-18s where it was a line of Stankoven-Mac-Bedard and that line was highly productive. Stankoven stands at 5'8, Bedard at 5'10, and bulky Mac at 6'.

We've had finesse wingers before paired with a big, strong centerman work for us: Kariya-Rucchin-Selanne.

It's worked with a big, less skilled winger with two high skill guys too (Kunitz-McDonald-Selanne). They would need at least one guy on each line that can fight in the corners and win battles, doesn't necessarily have to be a super skilled guy like the other two, just someone that meshes with the others. If Jones can play consistently like he did at the end of the season Gaucher can be a complimentary guy on the top lines, Gaucher/Jones-Zegras-Terry and Gaucher/Jones-McTavish-Bedard could be a great 1-2 punch.

Yeah we need 1-2 Beleskey/ Maroon type’s regardless of where we pick. 3rd line caliber big bodies that can fit into the top 6 by doing the dirty work, and that can keep opponents honest when they think about going after our skilled guys.

Jones has chemistry with McTavish, since they McTavish started off as 4C: Jones-McTavish-Leason. If Jones continues his offensive progression, then we might have a potential replacement for Rico after next season. Jones losing a year two seasons ago did affect his offensive development. We also have Nesterenko too, who seemed to find chemistry with McTavish. (What I don't get is that there is no chemistry between Mac and Terry! It's like there's no chemistry with a Lindholm-Fowler pairing.)

I actually would prefer Gaucher on a shutdown line at ES, but on the PP2 unit to be in front of the net. Preventing the other team from scoring is just as important as scoring.

Gaucher would probably be better on a shutdown line, but we are pretty thin at big forward prospects. Hopefully Tracey/Perrault can rebound (not saying they are big guys, but we do need some more players that can play in the top 6). If Jones develops even into an average offensive player and keeps the motor, he'd be a great 3rd wheel causing chaos. Ducks have a lot of players teams will hate playing against (for various reasons).

Carlsson is 6’3, but I don’t think he will add much physicality to the top 6.

The thing that sucks is we are unlikely to get #2 in the draft, so it’s likely Bedard or Carlsson for us.
