GDT: NHL 2020 Draft, Day 2

We have, if not the best, the deepest prospect pool in the league and a ton of picks this draft and next. That's a solid stream of NHLers for years to come, especially given our organization's development history with guys outside the first for most of the decade. If there is ever a time to swing for the fences, this is it. We don't need more base hits, we arguably have too many as it is; we need home runs.

Here's the deal.

The Kings likely deliberately drafted players that will either develop overseas or in college on a slower boil for a couple of reasons. They can't contract them all at the same time due to the limit, and more importantly - and this should really please the fanbase - that this will most likely be the last draft of the rebuild project.

Byfield afforded them this opportunity. The Kings 1st rounder next year is probably in play now for the right RFA, and it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see them add one significant piece in free agency with the thought of competing a year or two down the line.

Reaching for stars in the mid rounds is a fool's errand. The Kings just spent the day setting up a group of prospects who will likely be arriving in Ontario as the current group are graduating. If they took fliers on longshots with high upside now, you could be looking at another gap in the asset cycle just as they are ready to start moving some of the previous group for immediate help.

I have no doubt at all that these picks were made for extended development.

I have no issue with any of this. I wholeheartedly agree.

What I take issue with is the idea that we're not in a spot to make 'risky picks.' If we aren't, no one is. We have no problem drafting and churning out JAGs, we've done so at a greater rate than almost any other NHL team despite not having high picks for the better part of a decade.

I'm not saying every pick needs to be a faller or a long shot, just that if there is a team in the league well positioned to do so, it's us.

My earlier complaint about it is pretty moot now anyway.

Well, I'm not thrilled to pieces like I was in 2019... but, after Byfield, an interesting and diverse collection of potential.

Now to see if any of these guys will get to play any hockey for the next twelve months.
