PYLON-LESS PLAYOFFS
April 10, 2012

Portland, Oregon - The Portland Pylons failed to make the playoffs in their inaugural season, compiling a 34-36-2 record, good enough for 23rd in the NHL. "Not good enough," owner Paul Allen said in a statement. "We expected this team to win at least 35 games this season. I certainly hope the right moves are made this offseason to correct the situation."

We caught up with John Tavares as he was cleaning out his locker. "Of course it's disappointing," said the Pylons captain. "We all want to win."

Part of the reason for the disappointing season was the team's seeming inability to hold a lead. Plagued by late-game collapses, the Pylons gave up numerous leads. "I have to be more consistent," said goaltender Rick DiPietro, who earned the starting job halfway through the season. "It felt sometimes like when they'd get one by me, they were coming in bunches. I have to be better, and I have a plan this offseason to work on some things that I think will help my game."

As of right now, the Pylons will hold the 8th overall pick in the upcoming NHL draft.

Canucks With Another Chance To Win The Stanley Cup As They Win Game 5 With Buzzer Beater

Last year, Roberto Luongo had a lot of difficulty stopping pucks in Boston. This year, he's had a lot of difficulty stopping pucks on Long Island. Heading into the final minute with a 2-1 lead, the New York Islanders looked like they were going to carry their momentum on to a Stanley Cup victory. Unfortunately, Luongo surrendered 2 goals in the final minute.

Kevin Bieksa started the scoring with a slap shot from the point that found its way through a screen to the back of the net in the first period. Matt Stajan would tie it up early in the second for the Islanders and Pierre-Marc Bouchard scored another shortly after to put the Islanders up by 1.

With Martin Brodeur pulled for an extra skater with the face-off in the Islanders zone, the Islanders won the draw back, but the Canucks quickly swarmed Mark Streit in the corner, allowing Ray Whitney to come out with the puck. He centered to Sidney Crosby in the slot who one-timed home the tying goal with 34 seconds remaining.

Not long afterwards, the Islanders' Patrick Kane tried to hit Bouchard with a 2-line pass, but it was unfortunately broken up by Dan Boyle, who sent the puck quickly up ice to Crosby for a 2-on-1 with Martin St Louis. Crosby threatened to shoot, then dished a perfect saucer pass over the stick of defender Matt Greene to St Louis, who put it off the post and in with 0.4 seconds left.

Game 6 will take place tomorrow night in Vancouver and Vancouver fans are hoping for a better outcome than the last time they had the opportunity to win the cup at home, which resulted in last year's infamous Stanley Cup riot. Teemu Selanne (Upper Body) will not be in the line-up.

Series summary:
Game 1: 4-0 Vancouver
Game 2: 6-1 Vancouver
Game 3: 6-2 NY Islanders
Game 4: 3-0 NY Islanders
Game 5: 3-2 Vancouver

DUCKS MAKE SMALL MOVE AT DEADLINE

The ducks currently sit 13th in the west 8 points behind a playoff spot. With a 29-31-7 record the Ducks hopes for a playoff spot are all but faded away. Yet Tom Renney still managed to acquire his team a 3rd first round pick in the 2013 entry draft without losing much on his team.

The trade saw right wing Trent Hunter and a couple picks to Pittsburgh for left wing Tanner Glass and a 1st in 2013. The pick will likely be a low pick in the first round. Hunter who had only 6 goals and 19 points in 66 games saw a considerable goal production drop since last seasons 18.

[FIELDSET="OTHER NOTABLE TRADES"]
NYR - acquire 2014 1st round pick + Colin Fraser + Trevor Lewis from LA for Anton Stralman + Francois Bouchard

WSH - acquire Kevin Westgarth + 2014 5th round pick from CHI for Braden Holtby

Islanders Force Game 7 With 5-2 Win
June 1, 2012

Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals has not been kind to the Vancouver Canucks, but they're hoping the third time will be the charm.

Game 6 got off to a rough start for the Canucks as they gave up three in the opening frame and saw goaltender Martin Brodeur pulled between periods. Patrick Kane and Vincent Lecavalier teamed up on all 3 goals and both finished the game with 3 points a piece.

With backup Johan Hedberg in net, Vancouver slowly chipped away at the lead in the second and third periods with goals from Martin St Louis and Ryan Smyth. Vancouver pulled Hedberg with 41 seconds remaining for the extra attacker, but they were not able to generate any offense and ended up giving up 2 empty net goals.

Teemu Selanne returns to the line-up for Game 7 after he missed the last 2 games with an upper body injury. The ageless wonder hopes to add another Stanley Cup to his impressive career.

Both teams head back to Long Island for game 7 tomorrow night.

The Pylons did not make any trades during the offseason.

(I got messed up contract-wise, as Kabanov and Niederreiter both should have been playing in juniors, but are available to the Sound Tigers. So now I have two too many wingers signed. That hurts because I'm at the 50 contract limit...)

2012 Stanley Cup Champions

The New York Islanders have won the Stanley Cup in 2012, ending a nearly 30-year drought. The Stanley Cup run has helped secure funding for a new arena for the Islanders and a Stanley Cup parade will take place this weekend for the champs.

Islanders captain Vincent Lecavalier opened the scoring late in the first, deflecting a point shot past Martin Brodeur. Teemu Selanne would answer early in the second period to tie the game, grabbing a rebound and then roofing a backhand top corner on Roberto Luongo. Jason Arnott banged home a rebound late in the period to give the Canucks a 2-1 lead heading into the third period.

The Islanders came out possessed in the third, scoring two goals in the first minute. The first was another Vincent Lecavalier deflection that ricocheted off his knee just inside the post and the second was a Nikolai Kulemin snap shot from the slot that went in off the post. About halfway through the period, Martin St Louis was tripped on a breakaway giving him the opportunity to tie the game. He pulled off a nice deke, kicking the puck with his back skate to his forehand, then pulling it backhand, but Luongo was able to stretch out and get a toe on it, negating St Louis' efforts.

Lecavlier would add another deflection goal late in the third to put the game out of reach and score a hat trick. It was a great night for Lecavalier, pocketing his first Conn Smythe trophy and second Stanley Cup.

Excuse my ignorance but what is the Dynasty part of NHL 12?

A game mode which allows you to make trades, sign players, draft players, buy out contracts, edit lines, edit strategies, create plays, play games, play ahl games etc. etc. And what we do is just throw on either a story or describe what were doing with our dynasties however way we want. :)

11 Canucks Retire In Offseason, Huge Holes To Fill
June 19, 2012

The back-to-back Stanley Cup runner-up Vancouver Canucks suffered a huge blow early this offseason as 11 of their roster players announced their retirement from professional hockey. The list includes sure-fire first ballot hall of famers like Martin Brodeur and Teemu Selanne. Johan Hedberg, Jason Arnott, Matt Cullen, Daniel Alfredsson, Ray Whitney, Ryan Smyth, Roman Hamrlik, Adrian Aucoin, and Willie Mitchell also joined the pensioners club.

"I'm just happy we got to bring all these guys together for a spectacular year," said GM Mackenzie. "Obviously, we were all disappointed with the final game, but that doesn't discount the fact that we still accomplished a heck of a lot this season. I wish those guys all the best in their lives after hockey and I hope they keep in touch. Now we have to get prepared for the draft, free agency, and locking up our players."

HILLER INJURED UNTIL END OF SEASON
Jonas-HIller-pad-save.jpg

After making a big save against Ovechkin in the 2nd period, Hiller managed to pull his groin and went down in the fetal position until medics carried him off the ice. Hiller had 21 wins and only 16 losses this season with a 2.79GAA and .907SV%. He could have potentially carried the teams into an 8th place play off spot, but at this point the Ducks will most likely be looking to be tanking. With 3 first round picks, the higher the pick the better at this point.

'Well its really disappointing to see a guy like Hiller go down with an injury this late into the season, for the remainder of the season. I guess now, will be focusing on the draft, and hopefully moving up in the draft.' - Tom Renney

[FIELDSET="Thursday March 7th 2012 - Montreal Canadiens trade defense for offense at the deadline"]
There were rumors that the Canadiens were looking to add a big-body player up front at the expense of some prospect. It appears that general manager Marc Bergevin decided to acquire this big body player at the expense of his current defensive core.

NHL.com reported earlier today that the Canadiens traded Josh Gorges to the Winnipeg Jets for right winger Blake Wheeler. Later, the details about the trade came out. The whole trade sent Yannick Weber, Colby Armstrong, Josh Gorges along with a 2nd and a 3rd round pick in 2014 for Blake Wheeler and Marc Stuart.

Wheeler, 26, is set to become a free agent this summer. So far this season he has scored 22 goals and obtained 59 points in 64 games. Bergevin commented on the trade a few minutes ago : "We are sad to let go warriors like Josh Gorges and Colby Armstrong as well as a young puck-moving defenseman, but we felt they could become expendable with the progression of our young players like Beaulieu, Tinordi and Murray. We felt that we needed to add another big, powerful player to our team in order to reach our goal of making the playoffs this year. We will do all that is possible to re-sign Wheeler, as he is now a key-part of our core.

Wheeler said he was surprised to be traded when his team had a great shot at the Stanley Cup, but said he was very pleased to join the Montreal Canadiens and be part of their success.[/fieldset]

[fieldset="Friday March 8th 2012 - A look at the top prospects for the 2013 NHL Entry Draft"]
The draft-day is already waited eagerly by fans of teams like Columbus or New Jersey. Let's take a look at the 5 best prospects from this draft class so far.

1. Nathan MacKinnon - Center
A gifted offensive player with great vision and great speed. The team that will draft him will certainly have between their hands a franchise player.
Projection : 9.5D
Comparison : Sidney Crosby

2. Seth Jones - Defenseman
Seth Jones is a big defenseman from the United States. He is mainly known for his incredible poise, leadership and defensive play, but he can also produces very well offensively. He's gifted with an incredibly powerful and accurate slapshot that will fear more than one goalie.
Projection : 8.5B
Comparison : Scott Stevens

3. Ryan Pulock - Defenseman
Pulock is certainly smaller and not as rough as Jones, but he still brings a more complete offensive game to the expense of a lesser defensive play. He also skates pretty well.
Projection : 8.0C
Comparison : Drew Doughty

4. Hunter Shinkaruk - Left Winger
Shinkaruk as a deadly accurate shot. He's scored the most goal this past season in the CHL to prove it. Not the best skater, and quite small, his nose for the puck and his agressive play will certainly make him a threat for many years to come.
Projection : 8.5C
Comparison : Phil Kessel

5. Zachary Fucale - Goalie
He and Alexandre Bélanger are constantly battling to be the first drafted goaltender in this year's draft. Fucale is a very agile and quick goaltender with really acute reflexes. His speed makes it up for his small size, as it allows him to cover every part of the net very quickly. Players will hate playing against him.
Projection : 8.0C
Comparison : Marc-André Fleury

Other great prospects : G Alexandre Bélanger, D Colin Steckel, C Morgan Klimchuk, C Alex Forsberg, D Josh Morrissey, C Aleksander Barkov, D Steve Santini, D Robert Hagg, D Rasmus Ristolainen, C Jonathan Drouin[/fieldset]

Excuse my ignorance but what is the Dynasty part of NHL 12?

It's the "Be A GM" mode, which is exactly what it sounds like. In other EA Sports titles it's previously been called "Franchise" or "Dynasty" mode, which is where the thread title comes from.

SHAKE-UP IN PORTLAND
November 19, 2012

Portland, Oregon - The Portland Pylons made many improvements during the offseason, but still sit in 27th place in the NHL and 13th in the Eastern Conference, with a 7-10-3 record. "I expected better of this group," said GM Chibi Pooky. "This is a playoff team."

With the season rapidly slipping away, Pooky made a move that got everybody's attention. Struggling top line winger Matt Moulson was traded along with underperforming offseason acquisition David Moss and the club's second round draft picks this year and next year for veteran winger Brenden Morrow and defensive specialist Vernon Fiddler.

"With Brenden, we get an instant infusion of net presence to the top line," said coach Chibi Pooky. "Just like [Nicklas Lidstrom], he'll bring leadership to all situations," noted team captain John Tavares, on whose line Morrow will play. "I'm looking forward to having a winger who is willing to go to the dirty areas." His other wingers, Moulson (traded) and Parenteau, are noted perimeter players.

"It's great to be back in Portland," said Morrow, who played junior hockey for the Winter Hawks, winning the Memorial Cup with the team in 1997-1998. The 33-year old has also won Olympic gold as a member of Team Canada.

I'm just going with what their potential and attributes look like, and since I sim in advance (I'm already at the signing week - Just not posting it all at once), his attributes looked pretty much like those of Doughty and he has a A- B- B potential, which will probably not make him a Weber or Suter-like player. There's a difference between the game and what it is IRL. (Normally, I've created him with a B B B potential because I've heard those comparisons)

I'm sorry. I just remember hearing about it in a hockey magazine and when I edited his stats I made him more like a combo of Suter and Weber. He's awesome for me. I use him as a checker on D and as a bomber on Offense. The guy gets points like crazy for me. Good luck with your GM. I enjoy your write ups. :yo:

I don't think I'll be trading for a top pick to keep the thing as real as possible, although I would like to add him. However, with Beaulieu, Tinordi and Ellis looking great, I will probably try to target Drouin or Carrier who both seem good. I could possibly get a another 2nd round pick if I traded down, which I could use on Duclair or Subban if they're avalaible.
