ISLANDERS RELOCATE
September 21, 2011
Portland, Oregon - The New York Islanders are one of hockey's greatest traditions. No hockey fan can forget seeing Bossy, Trottier, Potvin or Turgeon take the ice.
Thanks in part to a lack of funding from Nassau County, that chapter of NHL history is closed. The Islanders are now the Portland Pylons. Former owner Ed Wang said, "It's been a tough road the past few years, but I have immensely enjoyed my time as owner of the New York Islanders. Best of luck to [new owner] Paul Allen." He then turned back to counting his money. The Pylons' new owner, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, commented as well: "I look forward to bringing the same successful breed of ownership as I have brought to the Portland Trail Blazers."
Captain John Tavares was the first player to speak about the move: "Well, it seemed a bit odd - we were all done with camp and ready to start the preseason, and then we got word we'd actually be playing in Portland... it all happened very fast. We appreciate everything Long Island has done for us, but now we're looking forward to thrilling the City of Roses and competing with the Winterhawks to be the best hockey team in the city."
The Pylons will play in the Rose Garden, a 20,000+ seat multi-purpose arena. "It's like we're a real NHL team!" exclaimed Tavares upon hearing the news. "It's so much more - well, everything - than the NVMC."
The move also signaled a different kind of change for the players. Top prospect Nino Niederreiter learned that he would spend the season in juniors instead of playing in the NHL. "It's probably a good thing," said Niederreiter, "I'm just not ready for that level. To be honest, I don't know why I was going to be called up in the first place."
The Pylons will start the season with the following lines:
Evgeni Nabokov will be the opening night starter in goal, with Rick DiPietro backing him up. Veterans Trevor Frischmon, Michael Haley, and Milan Jurcina are the healthy scratches. The Pylons open the preseason tomorrow against Pittsburgh, and the regular season opener is October 8th, a home game against the Florida Panthers.
