next Kings COACH...

Well, whoever gets the coaching job, it may very well be Blake's last. He's on his 3rd coach in two years. In Lombardi's 11 years as GM, he had 3 (4 if you want to include Stevens tenure as interim head coach after Murray was fired but before Sutter could join).

What did Yanetti do? If you think he's the reason they didn't draft well, DL had the final word and wanted a low skill, high character team. How many skilled guys did they pass up on because they didn't meet that? My guess, a lot. Also, you can't get good players when you start in the 3rd round. Once again, on DL.

By the time 2010 rolled around Mike Futa was in charge of all scouting and drafting. I highly doubt by that time Lombardi was in the draft room overriding his scouts and Futa. Lombardi is not out their scouting prospects and doing the grunt work. That may have happened in 06-09 that's believable that Lombardi may have been more hands on. By 2010 Lombardi had put in place all the people he wanted in the correct spots.

To simply blame all the drafting failures on Lombardi is ignoring a lot.

Also Todd Mclellan gets an offer from the Sabers he should take it.

When I hear him on the podcast I would prefer him to say "I am looking for more speed or skill" vs. "I like bigger players", to me it just seems to show that they haven't figured a thing out.

I just have a hard time believing that all the blame for the god awful drafting the last decade falls on DL, an NHL GM can spend only so much time on the road scouting and he has to lean on his scouting team. DL deserves most of the blame, and he was fired for it, but why were Yanetti and Futa promoted when the drafting has been so horrific?

it can also be the failure of the gm to put the correct people into the correct jobs.

i would be interested to know which teams have had the most draft success the past decade, broken up between total games played, total games played for the team that drafted the player, and total players outside the first round. split between position would be nice too.

it would also be pretty telling to see who can draft and develop well

They also had Hughes 1st overall. So it's not like they're picking their teeth with turkey legs and using chalk to take notes at the games.

Agreed 100%.

If Lombardi and Sutter deserved the axe in 2017, everyone else did, too.

It’s going to take several more years of awful seasons and ridiculous expectations for Uncle Phil to finally snore himself awake like in 2006 and bring in a brand new management team.
I get the feeling Uncle Phil is unplugged now. If or until he re-engages and fires Beckerman and Robitaille at a minimum, I expect the Kings to struggle. Leiweke was a slick operator, and meddled too much, but he didn't accept failure. I think Dean kind of put one over on Leiweke telling him the Kings could be competitive right from the get go, but he knew he had to stock pile picks and prospects. Drafting #4 , #2, and #5 overall three years in a row and hitting on a few second round picks, along with having Quick, Brown, and Kopitar already in the system was the foundation of the three year run.

Why would you include WD as a coach for Blake, but not Stevens as a coach for Lombardi? Both assumed the role with the title "interim"...

Best case scenario is Luc leaves for Montreal soon. Otherwise, it’s very hard to fire a legacy hire, I see Luc/Blake sticking around a few more years unfortunately.

Stevens was interim coach under Lombardi for what? Three games? A far cry from the 60+ (70+?) we had to endure of Free Willie.

For the purposes of this discussion the number of games they coached does not really matter. They both assumed the role as a placeholder until the GM could get their coach behind the bench.

I think DL was good for creating a team from the bottom with a bunch of prospects with the help from the scouting team. He had a vision, he was disciplined. However, he didn't know how to deal with the success of the organization. He got caught too many times rewarding players with bad contracts, trading away youth etc He served best as a GM who create a contender but not maintain one. So where did Futa and Yanetti fit into this when it came to those decisions is what I want to know.

I wonder what they were advising DL to push these signings when these contracts were coming down or was this DL just being desperate? LAs futures was being traded away for Sekera, Lucic etc. How did they feel about it at the time? That would be more telling to me on what to expect and frankly management would be the only one to know. Would love to have been a fly on the wall. I'm really curious if there was any discord.

I don't know if there was discord, but I remember Lombardi talking about how he told his scouting team that it would be the last year that they had so few picks following the 2016 draft. That year they had 4 picks(2nd, 4th,5th and 7th) and Deano talked about how hard it was on Futa and the team.

McLellan, hmm...maybe after the Kings get done with him they can hire DeBoer or Tippett. Are there any other guys out there Sutter completely out coached during the Kings three year run.

So, you're saying Dean would be the perfect choice to be the Kings GM now? I would be okay with it.

I don't know what his record was against Sutter, but the Islanders had Fred Flinstone for awhile, and I don't think he's doing anything except eating bronco burgers now....

I don't remember DeBoer getting out coached by Sutter in 2016.

It absolutely matters. Dean already had his guy locked up, he just had to take care of a family commitment to his son first. Blake is still standing around with his balls in his hand. And let's not act like 3/4 of a season is not significant compared to a few games.

I see, when the Kings won, it was Sutter....when they lost, it was the players.
Nah, when the Kings won the players definitely played a huge role. I think the 2013 and 2014 playoffs was the best coaching we may ever see from behind the Kings bench.

Because Sutter was already in the plans of coaching the Kings. Plus they kept Stevens in the org when Sutter joined.

WD was told his services were no longer required, therefore, fired.

Come on, you are being ridiculous. WD was hired as an interim coach, his tenure had an expiration date on it from the time he was hired. We are speaking of including coaches a GM has hired, it is unfair to include WD in this conversation when he was obviously not chosen as a long term solution. He was a stop gap, similar to what Stevens was. The reality is, Blake has hired 1 coach in Stevens at this point(and there is debate about whether the promotion was a part of a handshake agreement).
