At a certain point, you'll see more load management like the NBA. Hockey players have been more resistant to it, but it's clearly coming at some point. I think there are already signs of it.
Double the length of 3v3 in OT and I'm sure we would see very few, if any, shootouts.
Well, it's an impossibility because of the TV schedule. Indefinite OTs sounds great, but there's going to be a LOT of upset fans when that December double OT game on NBC is suddenly switched to the local news.
I don't pretend to know the contracts the NBA or the MLB have for their respective networks, but it's obviously different than the one that the NHL has.
And yes, the shootout could go on indefinitely. But it, on average, almost always ends earlier than an additional OT period. And the league has scheduled games to account for especially long shootouts (hence why they tend to finish regulation around 9:30, meaning even long shootouts won't interfere with whatever comes on at 10:00)
Other than Aho and maybe, Slavin, I imagine the rest of the team will be taking in some warm Caribbean air or vacaying some place nice.lol it seems Bettman and the owners want the gate for 2 additional reg season games in the next contract.
I’d add, any year where there is an in-season tournament with a compressed schedule is also going to be a burden for players in between the break (I wonder if Jarvis goes on vacation to Mexico again during the 4 Nationa Cup?).
KK probably has a so/so chance of joining Aho with his start so far.Other than Aho and maybe, Slavin, I imagine the rest of the team will be taking in some warm Caribbean air or vacaying some place nice.
A little different but along the same lines: BurnoutAt a certain point, you'll see more load management like the NBA. Hockey players have been more resistant to it, but it's clearly coming at some point. I think there are already signs of it.
Agree.....I found it interesting that some Ranger fans are crabbing about Tro this year.I'm biased, but I do think you have to put Carolina as a top 5 managed team in the league. Virtually every other team that is a contender has no prospect pool and at least one backbreaking contract. Canes have neither. Every offseason they find a new way to "zig" when the rest of the league "zags". Every offseason it looks like we'll take a step back because we didn't re-sign a key piece, and we find another piece at a cheaper price. The DeAngelo and then Burns moves after Hamilton have been incredible. The Kotkaniemi piece still has time, although that currently is a meaningful net loss over Trocheck. Every year the Canes find themselves in a corner, but the Borg finds a creative way to dance their way around the problem. Frankly, it's astonishing. And we on this forum find a way to doubt them at every turn.

I'm more talking guys having scheduled games off. A couple fewer minutes is nice, but not necessarily what I'd consider big time load management.Tulsky and Brind'Amour already do a form of it on the blue-line. A huge chunk of ice time goes to our 2nd and 3rd pair in the regular season. Slavin and Burns are only averaging slightly above 21 minutes a game, which is tiny for a top-pairing.
Couldn’t this be said about any team/every team though?Other than Aho and maybe, Slavin, I imagine the rest of the team will be taking in some warm Caribbean air or vacaying some place nice.
I wish they could cut the schedule back to something like 60 games. Maybe the quality on the ice would be better with less injuries.
I heard a former coach talking about the Canes and why teams handle them better in the playoffs vs the regular season. He said in the regular season teams are often facing us as their 2nd or 3rd game of the week and it's not always worth the extra effort to figure the Canes system out or outplay us, apply the needed response, etc. The needed energy simply isn't always there. He made it sound like a pragmatic choice. But, in the playoffs when they have the extra time to study, he said they practice our system and role play, etc. which ultimately makes our special teams less effective.
I will note that the NHL probably goes to OT WAY more often than the other "big 4" sports, though I don't have the data to back that up. But I agree, especially at 3v3, there's no reason to think most OT games wouldn't end within about 10 min. Better yet, get rid of the SO, but after 10 min the winner is decided with a goalie fight!!That “impossibility” never seems to bother the NHL during the playoffs, and never seems to bother the NBA for 4OT classics or the MLB for 18 inning marathons in the regular season. So… you’ll have to do more to convince me that it’s “impossible.”
Not to mention, the NHL already technically does have an indefinite OT. The shootout could theoretically go on forever. This is just a better version of that, but you have to trust math.
He stated that the Canes system is a bit of an outlier compared to the game most other teams are currently playing and what they encounter night in night out. Similar to how it often takes players who join the Canes more time to acclimate to the style of play here.Couldn’t this be said about any team/every team though?
Best of 5 has been my preference as well. Save for the SC finals which I would keep at 7.RE: Schedule Loading
I think the NHL would benefit a lot by switching playoffs to best of 5 series, 7 just gets way too long...playoffs shouldn't take 2+ months. Either start them later to "spread" the regular season out more, or you end the season earlier?
And yet, despite not getting to the Cup finals we've gotten to the Eastern conference finals twice and won at least one series over the last 6 seasons. Sure, not the mountain top, but much better than most.He was refreshing instead of the tons of media who preface their coverage with "we know they can win in the regular season but it remains to be seen if they can ever take it to the next level...etc." It's like they can't just cover the moment or current topic without tossing that in every time.
For what's it worth, this same excuse is given for the international hockey games which have to finish at the time known beforehand to the domestic broadcasters in various countries. Hockey is more international game than the other biggest team sports in the US.That “impossibility” never seems to bother the NHL during the playoffs, and never seems to bother the NBA for 4OT classics or the MLB for 18 inning marathons in the regular season. Looking it up, apparently one national free-to-view channel shows one NHL game a week. To my understanding, they are in cahoots with Viasat who shows every game on their subscription channel packages and online service.Genuinely curious, how many NHL games hit the Finnish airwaves? Not “streamable” but actually broadcasted on national/notable TV channels?

To me, it's a shampoo.Well, to me, Studio Linen is the backdrop with the NHL logos and stuff that they put behind RBA when he does interviews.
Also, a lot of Florida/Carolina/Dallas in that lineup (understandably).
