Double the length of 3v3 in OT and I'm sure we would see very few, if any, shootouts.

I did some research on this at one point in order to bolster my point that OT should be indefinite until someone scores.

About 67% of games that go to OT end in OT. Therefore 33% go to shootout.

Doing the math very roughly, that means extending to 10 min would result in only 10% going to shootout. 15 min -> ~3%. 20 min -> ~1%.

So, if we extend 3v3 OT to a full 20 min period, only 1% of games would go beyond that point (that’s ignoring other factors that lengthen or shorten the game, like the BS the Capitals did last year to purposely take the game to the shootout, stars getting tired as the game continues, leading to more scoring opps, etc.)

Those 1% that do go to double OT? Instant classics that fans remember forever.

Truly, there’s no reason not to have indefinite OT. 2 of the other 3 major sports have theoretically indefinite OTs, but for some reason we act like it’s an impossibility. Once the game went to 3v3 in became a no brainer.

Well, it's an impossibility because of the TV schedule. Indefinite OTs sounds great, but there's going to be a LOT of upset fans when that December double OT game on NBC is suddenly switched to the local news.

That “impossibility” never seems to bother the NHL during the playoffs, and never seems to bother the NBA for 4OT classics or the MLB for 18 inning marathons in the regular season. So… you’ll have to do more to convince me that it’s “impossible.”

Not to mention, the NHL already technically does have an indefinite OT. The shootout could theoretically go on forever. This is just a better version of that, but you have to trust math.

I don't pretend to know the contracts the NBA or the MLB have for their respective networks, but it's obviously different than the one that the NHL has.

And yes, the shootout could go on indefinitely. But it, on average, almost always ends earlier than an additional OT period. And the league has scheduled games to account for especially long shootouts (hence why they tend to finish regulation around 9:30, meaning even long shootouts won't interfere with whatever comes on at 10:00)

This is a lack of creative thinking. Yes, I'm sure some sort of arrangement would have to be figured out with the networks. My point is, that hasn't stopped the NHL from the months of April-June, and that hasn't stopped the NBA and MLB at all. So it's clearly not an immovable object situation here.

lol it seems Bettman and the owners want the gate for 2 additional reg season games in the next contract.

I’d add, any year where there is an in-season tournament with a compressed schedule is also going to be a burden for players in between the break (I wonder if Jarvis goes on vacation to Mexico again during the 4 Nationa Cup?).
Other than Aho and maybe, Slavin, I imagine the rest of the team will be taking in some warm Caribbean air or vacaying some place nice.

I wish they could cut the schedule back to something like 60 games. Maybe the quality on the ice would be better with less injuries.

I heard a former coach talking about the Canes and why teams handle them better in the playoffs vs the regular season. He said in the regular season teams are often facing us as their 2nd or 3rd game of the week and it's not always worth the extra effort to figure the Canes system out or outplay us, apply the needed response, etc. The needed energy simply isn't always there. He made it sound like a pragmatic choice. But, in the playoffs when they have the extra time to study, he said they practice our system and role play, etc. which ultimately makes our special teams less effective.

I'm biased, but I do think you have to put Carolina as a top 5 managed team in the league. Virtually every other team that is a contender has no prospect pool and at least one backbreaking contract. Canes have neither. Every offseason they find a new way to "zig" when the rest of the league "zags". Every offseason it looks like we'll take a step back because we didn't re-sign a key piece, and we find another piece at a cheaper price. The DeAngelo and then Burns moves after Hamilton have been incredible. The Kotkaniemi piece still has time, although that currently is a meaningful net loss over Trocheck. Every year the Canes find themselves in a corner, but the Borg finds a creative way to dance their way around the problem. Frankly, it's astonishing. And we on this forum find a way to doubt them at every turn.
Agree.....I found it interesting that some Ranger fans are crabbing about Tro this year.

At a certain point, you'll see more load management like the NBA. Hockey players have been more resistant to it, but it's clearly coming at some point. I think there are already signs of it.

Tulsky and Brind'Amour already do a form of it on the blue-line. A huge chunk of ice time goes to our 2nd and 3rd pair in the regular season. Slavin and Burns are only averaging slightly above 21 minutes a game, which is tiny for a top-pairing.

I'm more talking guys having scheduled games off. A couple fewer minutes is nice, but not necessarily what I'd consider big time load management.

Couldn’t this be said about any team/every team though?

I will note that the NHL probably goes to OT WAY more often than the other "big 4" sports, though I don't have the data to back that up. But I agree, especially at 3v3, there's no reason to think most OT games wouldn't end within about 10 min. Better yet, get rid of the SO, but after 10 min the winner is decided with a goalie fight!!

RE: Schedule Loading
I think the NHL would benefit a lot by switching playoffs to best of 5 series, 7 just gets way too long...playoffs shouldn't take 2+ months. Either start them later to "spread" the regular season out more, or you end the season earlier?

He stated that the Canes system is a bit of an outlier compared to the game most other teams are currently playing and what they encounter night in night out. Similar to how it often takes players who join the Canes more time to acclimate to the style of play here.

He was refreshing instead of the tons of media who preface their coverage with "we know they can win in the regular season but it remains to be seen if they can ever take it to the next level...etc." It's like they can't just cover the moment or current topic without tossing that in every time.

Best of 5 has been my preference as well. Save for the SC finals which I would keep at 7.

And yet, despite not getting to the Cup finals we've gotten to the Eastern conference finals twice and won at least one series over the last 6 seasons. Sure, not the mountain top, but much better than most.

I'm not trying to make excuses, it's just that they overlook significant post-season success, even though we've not cracked the ultimate goal.

For what's it worth, this same excuse is given for the international hockey games which have to finish at the time known beforehand to the domestic broadcasters in various countries. Hockey is more international game than the other biggest team sports in the US.

Genuinely curious, how many NHL games hit the Finnish airwaves? Not “streamable” but actually broadcasted on national/notable TV channels?

Looking it up, apparently one national free-to-view channel shows one NHL game a week. To my understanding, they are in cahoots with Viasat who shows every game on their subscription channel packages and online service.

For this fall, the games are:
La 5.10. klo 17 Global Series Praha: New Jersey Devils–Buffalo Sabres, MTV Sub
La 12.10. klo 20 Boston Bruins–Los Angeles Kings, MTV Sub
La 19.10. klo 22.30 Dallas Stars–Edmonton Oilers (studiollinen), MTV Sub
Pe 1.11. klo 19.30 Global Series Tampere: Dallas Stars–Florida Panthers (studiollinen), MTV3
La 2.11. klo 17.30 Global Series Tampere: Florida Panthers–Dallas Stars (studiollinen), MTV Sub
Ma 11.11. klo 19.30 Buffalo Sabres–Montreal Canadiens, MTV Sub
La 30.11. klo 22.30 Florida Panthers–Carolina Hurricanes (studiollinen), MTV Sub
Su 8.12. klo 20 New York Rangers–Seattle Kraken, MTV Sub
Su 22.12. klo 19.30 New York Rangers–Carolina Hurricanes, MTV Sub
La 28.12. klo 19.30 Florida Panthers–Montreal Canadiens (studiollinen), MTV Sub
Ke 1.1. klo 00.00 Winter Classic: Chicago Blackhawks–St. Louis Blues, MTV Sub

"Studiollinen" means with a studio.

Well, to me, Studio Linen is the backdrop with the NHL logos and stuff that they put behind RBA when he does interviews.

Also, a lot of Florida/Carolina/Dallas in that lineup (understandably).
To me, it's a shampoo.

And, yes, and your matinee games, mainly, because it's an advertisement-financed channel so the paymasters like them being on the primetime.
