To which the reaction here was "They decided it's in their best interests, let them be." It can be in their best interests and a rational choice for them and still helping a bad regime.

And are we contending that there isn't coverage of bad regimes and people doing business with them?

Sorry, this is a very offseason discussion. Maybe Lou gives us something more fun to talk about soon. :)
I limited my response to the tweeter's call for, IDK, some kind of public cancellation. by pointing out that it's hard to do something like that without being hypocritical. I don't think he was looking for a discussion - he was looking for a punishment. I was thinking more along the lines of a, "let him who is without sin cast the first stone".

Before Kadri signed, Lou should be fired for signing him. So, should Lou be fired for not signing him now?
I'm thinking of news organizations who write two articles before, say, an election, and then depending on the result they print one or the other. Do posters do that too? "Lou should be fired because [insert 1 or 2 here]."

Also to @doublechili and @JKP - sorry for my part in derailing this thread. I won't argue about this any further.
I've replied and now am just seeing your post. I'm good with a ceasefire and getting back on topic. :thumbu:

Thank the lord. Kadri was not the guy this team needed. Gaudreau would have filled a huge need but you don’t just go sign 31 YO kadri to 7 years as a consolation prize. He would have helped over the next 2 years but would not be the key piece this team needs. This is Ladd 2.0

Right, so get pissed at your favourite hockey player for buying his wife a diamond dug up by some 10 yo or buying his Ferrari that burns gobs of Saudi oil... The world is imperfect and most of it is not "free."

My aunt has worked in Beijing for the last three years and while I never would because of how that regime runs (a good friend of mine is married to a girl from Hong Kong and the stories she's told are harrowing), I haven't judged her for it or felt she shouldn't have gone - it's her choice, her career, her risks. She's a grown up. These players are grown ups.

I don't get why some people choose some bad state actors to stress about and others to gloss over and ignore.

I don't know what your profession is, but if an employer offered you, say, $2 million a year tax free to work in Moscow for the next two years, would you not consider it?
TAXI !!!✋

AIrport please. International terminal!!

Seems official - from TSN

I understand how you feel about that. I guess I wonder how it's that much different from all the products we buy from China or oil we buy from Saudi Arabia or the clothing and sneakers we buy from third-world child labour or the diamonds and resources we buy from some horrible regimes in Africa?
But, You know, it's personal for Irbe, and it's personal for me too. My family was fled Russian pogroms In Lithuania. My wife's family fled Russian progroms outside of Kyiv. Russia has pulled this **** in the region ever since they achieved indpendence from the Tatars, and became an Empire, and I can't even begin to guess how many people have died as a result. Figuring out whether there's any commonality between town names in familial memory that were wiped from the map by some Cossack paramlitary sounds pretty weird. Unless you're of Eastern European derivation. Last, we know about blood diamonds, etc. because people you'd like to shut up & 'live and let live' didn't.

Maybe these hockey players should play with "Careful - Fragile" stickers on them in Russia.

Obviously nobody wants to come play here is the reason. How many years has it been since we signed a prime player in the offseason? I can't even remember one at the moment. I'm not putting zero blame on Lou, but obviously this dates back almost forever,

Without looking it up, I think the last relatively high profile player to sign here was Ladd.

Just Snow didn't know that he was already beyond his peak and damaged goods.

When have the Islanders *ever* signed a big name unrestricted free agent?

I don't think we have.

Ladd was a " well we lost Okposo and Nielsen and you don't have anyone that wants you, so come sign with us" kinda deal

What's really starting to irk me is...It's not like players run for the hills as soon as they become UFA's. Meaning, when they come here they don't seem to hate it.

Probably takes more than one year in the shiny new building to erase the stank of the Coli-parking lot-Marriott most players still remember…

I guess the truth is, the only way is to draft players or hope to hit the Grabner/Moulson (the unwanted) who turn out to be good players for us.

I've mentioned a few times in recent weeks that if you look at Tampa and Colorado, and even earlier Chicago, LA, and Pittsburgh, you'll see that those teams' best players were all self-drafted.

COL: MacKinnon, Landeskog, Rantanen, Makar
TBL: Stamkos, Kucherov, Point, Hedman, Vasilevsky
PIT: Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Fleury
LAK: Kopitar, Brown, Doughty, Quick
CHI: Kane, Toews, Keith, Seabrook

The "nu" NHL requires your best players to come from within.

Hey, the Isles have a self-drafted 60point $7M center that needs to be unleashed, does that count?

Being the winger to unlock Barzy’s potential certainly hasn’t been a selling point for UFAs. I, for one, am shocked. Shocked I say.

The key here is that the Flames were will to jettison Monahan and a first round pick to sign Kadri.
Lou obviously felt giving up assets to sign Kadri was a zero sum game.
Depending on who they would have had to give up, it was probably the correct decision.

Biggest one I can think of was Satan, and even that was helped along by it being the first offseason under the new CBA with the salary cap. Other than that, biggest ones were probably Ladd (damaged goods), Streit (had only one good season at the time) and Zhitnik (see Satan).
