Entertaining game last night between Calgary and Winnipeg. I know it is late for those in the east. It looked like Ehlers got hurt at the end. I always liked him and was intrigued about him during his draft year. I know this may be uncommon but I love ESPN Plus.

ESPN+ is great

ESPN's NHL coverage / broadcast is what's worth criticizing

The Canucks gotta be the wonkiest roster in the NHL even when you consider how good their talent is. Noah Juulsen is on an NHL roster in 2023, and Josh Bailey is out of hockey. Sick.

Former Islander-related news:
Dal Colle is playing here in Germany. Holy crap, he's moving around out there as slowly as your average German player. They use him in all offensive situations, and he's not a net negative on the ice per se, but jeez Louise, there's nothing special being done when that puck is on his stick and you see that shot of his like once a game. He can't even find space for it here.

He's at 1-2-3 in 8 games.

The DEL is very akin to the AHL in playing level (not surprising, considering half the league used to play in the AHL), but can even be ECHL level on bad nights.

Just unbelievable watching this guy here and thinking we once used the #5 overall pick on him.

I cannot do a thing to get rid it. Nothing I press there gets rid of it. I can't just accept all or accept nothing, and it goes away. I can only get rid of it by refreshing my screen, something several times. Or even sometimes having to close the window and then going back in again.

Any tips?

Gotta be so disappointing for these kids and their families. They go their entire youth dominating the game and being groomed for NHL stardom. Only to not quite continue their trajectory and are viewed as "busts." Must be emotionally devastating.

Possibly. On the other hand, he is earning a living playing hockey, and not many people get to do that. That's a pretty good silver lining after not quite being able to live up to expectations.

He's still a young man. I'm sure he's disappointed it didn't work out in the NHL, but he was able to make it there and got a fair shot at it. He's got a lot to be proud of, as that's a difficult road that not many are able to make at all. He's got a potentially bright future and a lot of options ahead of him. Good for him and I wish him the best of luck on his journey.

Yeah I think that's how you and I would look at it but these kids are the elite of the elite. Always the best player wherever they go and told how talented and gifted they are. Then at some point the realization is there that not only can I make pro, but I'm going to be a first round pick in the NHL. To get there, and NOT be able to hang in the league is most likely the first and biggest hockey "failure" they experience.

I think it's different for kids that are late round picks or undrafted. But to go #5 overall and then have to play in a league like the DEL has to sting big time.

Anyone watch the rags last night? They played a very disciplined game blocking shots paying the price for a decisive road win vrs the young hot shot sabres. Shesty did not have much work to do. Lavy could get them off to a hot start.

Dave Chyzowski in my pre-teen years is why I can cope with the Dal Colle’s of this day and age.

I feel like we've been hearing that for a long time. Granted, they have some great young players. I guess the question this year will be whether they can actually keep the puck out of their net?

Re: MDC, I'm sure he had dreams of NHL stardom, but stepping back he made it through to the top .001% (or whatever percentage) of kids who played hockey. My sons play soccer and I've learned a lot watching as they climbed up the ladder and the level of the players keeps improving. They've both been done in by injuries but kids they've played with and against are playing/entering D1 soccer and a few even have, or will soon get, pro contracts. But even those guys have a ways to go to be more than an MDC (and the MLS is not one of the top leagues in the world). So yeah, we can comment on players like MDC or Bailey or even Brian Strait, but those guys achieved something remarkable. BTW, please don't bring this up next time I criticize a player or say "So and so stinks!". ;)

Devon Toews: $7.25M X 7 years

Solid player who obviously has improved since his Isles days but….how does Adam Pelech get only $5.75M?

Considering the term, Pelech has the best deal on the Isles and one of the better ones in the league.

Must be that Isles GM that lost his touch since his last Cup at fault
Toews ‘obviously improved’ is quite the understatement
He’s like a 99% WAR according to the advanced stats. Part of Maker’s success is due to Toew’s greatness.
We all remember that it came down to the uncertainty of Toew’s arbitration rights that led to the trade instead of Leddy after Devon had a mediocre playoff that season.

Fair call on the “obviously improved” comment. I was worried I’d get called out on that.

I still stand by the comparison. I’d take Pelech over Toews 7 days a week.

Addendum: I’ll add Pulock’s $6.25M AAV is also a head scratcher in comparison to Pelech’s. I know they pay for offense but do we get that with Pulock?

I think you have that reversed. I don't think I've seen someone become so overrated overnight like Toews has, it's f***ing wild.

That's a good deal though, even if Toews isn't as good as people are claiming (he's simply not a top ten NHL defenseman).

Pulock as a RHD with some offense likely placed him at that salary comparable to other players around the NHL. That’s my understanding of how agents/GMs try to hash these deals out.

But in comparison to the Isles roster, Pelech is clearly the better value.

With that said, I am curious to see how Pulock does with Romanov. Personally, I never been one that feels a D-man HAS to score. But I can see Pulock and Romanov sound well with facing lower competition. Or, not. I guess we’ll see.

Rick Tocchet is unhappy with Anthony Beauvillier's slow start to the season. Connor Garland wants out of Vancouver. SOP for the Canucks again.
